PS now is basically the beta for next gen. You will see it's true form next year.

I don't see Sony winning this battle. It's going to be one of the real big contenders like MS, Google, Amazon, or Apple. Sony is small potatoes, they should have pushed PSNow harder in the past but they're too attached to the traditional game console model and they're kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.

PSNow has been available for almost 5 years now in North America ... how do they not even have a smartphone app for it? How did they not have PS4 content available on it until very recently? They were not taking that very seriously.

MS hasn't had the same success with physical hardware so they don't give a crap if that part of the industry goes up in flames.

As the OP shows, Sony has literally already started running this race before any of the other players have started. They currently are owning this Game Subscription market just as they are owning the Digital and Physical Retail ones.

Sony HAD PSNow for phones and Vita but in last 2 years they pulled them because the quality standard was pretty low. Phones are getting more powerful and are maybe ready for the big return. Currently, they are the only ones who have been successful at any level on this tho.

There are 275 PS4 titles alone on PSNow, that is more than GamePass has total, the rest of that 700+ is PS3, PS2, PS1 games.

Probably because Game Pass has certain games the same day they release, that's about the only major difference I can think of.

I mean that would be an awesome bullet point....if they were games the caliber of what Sony and Nintendo produce. So far GamePass has seen what? Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, Crackdown 3 Day and Date. Games that didn't perform well review or perception wise. Sea of Thieves from what I understand could make a comeback tho.

Did it get Forza? Will it get Gear of War 5? Will it get Halo Infinite?  I question how far they will take the "1st Party Games Day One" rule. Doing so could really cripple some well performing title's sales at retail.

It reminds me of when Sony first started doing Free games with Plus subscription. It was all fun and games until when the PS4 came out they saw a drop in lesser AA title sales because everyone was like "Oh, it will end up on Plus for free so I won't buy it". I think Sony facetiously didn't put many games as Plus titles (Like Knack for the longest) just to break that mindset.

I'm not claiming one way or another of who is better, I'm answering the OPs question of why people think Game Pass is better.

Forza was available day 1 and I believe they mentioned Halo being day 1 but I could be wrong on that one.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

PSNow and GamePass are different services at the current rate. PSNow is a Streaming service on multiple devices while GamePass is exclusive to the Xbox One from what I know of. However the big difference with the two is that PSNow is a standard Streaming services while GamePass will most likely become a Streaming service that connects to XCloud that would (Should) offer premium Streaming abilities.

Its not exactly rocket science to know PSNow is more popular right now because its available on PC where as GamePass is on the X1. Big market difference.

In the end, GamePass is a library of free games on X1 which will offer brand new games as well as old, while PSNow is a Streaming service of old games for the PC.

GamePass has huge potential because its being built as a service that can be brought to other platforms as a Streaming network and it will be linked to one of the biggest Cloud based networks in the world. Weather Sony counters that with hiring out Amazon or Google's Cloud network remains to be seen, but right now Sony is behind the 8 ball when it comes to Cloud Streaming eco-system. Giakia is very small and limited to high rate of latency etc. It is growing but it has along way to go.

Game Pass is on PC

Gamepass has stable downloads to play on XB1 but this raises the question, how will this service work for next gen and their plan to touch other devices? STREAMING is the only answer to that, as you cannot play native games coded for other consoles. So PSNow is actually ahead of the curve for what is supposed to be MS's master plan with the service

For starters... There is this thing called "Virtualization", "Binary Translation", "Abstraction" and "Emulation" that allows for Microsofts current backwards compatibility efforts to be a drop in on next-gen hardware/other devices with minimal effort.

PSNow earned around $143 Million out of the total $273 Million made in Game Subscriptions in 2018w has.

Of course that's going to happen. Sony has a larger piece of the console market than Microsoft.

You can stream Gamepass titles to PC via the Windows 10 Xbox app I think... You still need a console to do the heavy lifting/rendering though.

PSNow is a lame service.

No support on tablet or smartphone.

They had an app for smart TVs, that they actually cancelled and stopped supporting.

Little to no new release content, wasn't even PS4 content until recently.

Sony is not serious about this, they value the traditional market too much so they are handcuffed in what they can do with PSNow.

Microsoft does not have the same limitations or priorities. You'll be able to play new games on xCloud on your phone, tablet, smart TV, PC, Switch, or XBox wherever and when ever you want, xCloud is going to be a much better service that MS is putting all their weight behind not just a token effort.

Looks like day 1 for all major releases is Microsoft's standard.

MS doesn't give a fuck, that's what makes it so difficult for Sony to counter ... XBox sales are OK but they're nothing that special. But for Sony it's a massive problem if they're forced into making a streaming service that has day 1 content of new releases.

How do you sell $60 copies of Spider-Man or God of War then? Why does anyone even need a PS5 then when you can just load up an app on your smart TV or even tablet/phone and play there?

The situation puts Sony in a real bind, I'm sure they would prefer the gaming business to stay as status quo as it has been. MS is in this to beat Amazon and Google, they don't care if Sony's model has to burn down in the process.

What I am saying is the Day 1 release has not proven to be in MS's favor. Gamepass is being pummeled by PSNow and doesn't give Day 1 exclusive releases. Just like Netflix doesn't usually get Shows and Movies  Day and Date with release. I don't think that means Sony isn't taking it seriously, it's just a better model economically. It is Netflix vs Hulu. Hulu has shows shortly after release but doesn't change the fact Netflix dwarfs it's base with older and exclusive content 20 times over.

As it stands Sony uses PSNow as a means of casual and late to the party gamers to jump in and play catch up on older stuff. No, they aren't going to get Spiderman anytime soon, but PSNow does have over 120+ exclusive older games up there to choose from. Meaning they got the retail sales at release.....and also getting people playing them using subscription.

As long as Sony is doing great at hardware, they will always treat PSNow as a legacy service. That doesn't mean it can't compete. When Gamepass has a true blockbuster Day and Date with Launch we can talk(maybe Halo Infinite). Until then, it is an unproven gimmick to try and pull subscribers.

Sony is literally winning this battle right now but the way the media talks as if they are not even in it. It is baffling.

Gamer Pass is not the PSNow competitor. xCloud is, that will be coming this fall. You're comparing apples to oranges right now.

Gamer Pass has been very successful (likely much to Sony's dismay).

Sony likely has dithered and screwed up their chances in streaming by being so conservative with PSNow. MS doesn't care, they are in this to beat Google and Amazon and if that means Halo Infinite day 1 on xCloud ... they'll do it.

So I find it kind of annoying the number of articles in the past 6 months that drone over how Gamepass is a game changer and Sony needs a response to it. Its just funny because Gamepass was MS's reply to Sony's already established PS NOW service. Just like Cross Play functionality, and Mid Gen Upgraded Hardware the media seems to rally behind Microsoft for doing what Sony had initially established. Take a look.....

Playstation Now

-service has over 700 games ready to stream

-Available on PS4, PC, Soon to return to Phones

-Mostly Stream, but just added ability to download select games directly

GamePass

-250 games available

-Available on XB1, soon PC, with Strong rumors of Switch

-Currently is only download

Say what you will about which is the better service; PSNOW being stream only leaves it at the whim of internet speeds and other bandwidth issues. Gamepass has stable downloads to play on XB1 but this raises the question, how will this service work for next gen and their plan to touch other devices? STREAMING is the only answer to that, as you cannot play native games coded for other consoles. So PSNow is actually ahead of the curve for what is supposed to be MS's master plan with the service. Yet PSNOW also sports more than double the games available than Gamepass and makes a shit ton more money then anyone seems to be giving it credit for....

PSNow earned around $143 Million out of the total $273 Million made in Game Subscriptions in 2018

With this information, why pray tell does the Media keep pretending MS is leading this charge on Subscription/Stream gaming?

Is it because of the information of their Server Farms? Because all of that sounds good on paper but completely untested. I am not a tech expert, but as long as only half of the US has internet and US internet consistency remains dodgy I don't see even MS's High tech stream capability shirking the same issues PSNow has.

@bolded: And that's the major issue, try getting stable, fast internet in rural areas. Also, it can consume data caps pretty fast. Being able to download the games is much better for most people.

Second issue is 720p30fps only, no matter if the original game was 1080p60 or anything in between, so most PS4 titles take a visual hit on PSNow. Finally, it's much more expensive than the Game Pass.

The reason why PSNow made more money should be obvious to anybody: PSNow is available on PS4 and PC, while Gamepass only on XBO. Also, PSNow is much older. In fact, for being so much longer on the market and having a much larger potential customer base, PSNow earnings are actually almost pitiful. Considering the cost of the service, it equals to little more than 1M subscribers

Exactly, PSNow has been available for almost 5 full years. Sony has a paltry 1 million subscribers? No way to use the service on smartphones or tablets or smart TVs?

They are not serious about this at all and have purposefully held the service back because they don't want it to interfere with the traditional business model.

The problem is Microsoft doesn't a give a fuck about any of that, they are thinking about being the dominant player in the battle for the cloud with Google and Amazon, and they want to have the dominant streaming game service more than they want some cookie for beating the Playstation in game consoles.
