Forums - PC Discussion - How Epic Store Exclusives are bringing console wars to PC

For a time now I've been watching a youtuber by the name of Overlord Gaming, a user who has been covering topics ranging from DRM, cracks, piracy, GPU competition, Company strategies, game performance and of course company "competition".

His most recent video dabbles into Epic Games store, and how it is bringing console style wars to PC, as well as talking about issues that come along with it:

I'd say I agree with him in how the EGS isn't full on healthy competition, as well as the the clarity that EG lacks in general.

I know it's 27m long, but it was well worth a watch in terms of knowing just what has been going on between some devs and their NDA's, as well as the dealings EG has been doing up until now.

I'd also like to add another user who has contributed to the "competition" topic of recent events regarding EGS and Steam:

I would like to remind everyone as well that EGS still has a long way to go, in order to even catch up with the missing features that should have been there since day 1 (Because anyone should know that you do serious R&D before launching a product/service, always):

(Recent updates to EGS has added Cloud saves, some regional pricing and an offline mode)

Tagged for later,

But without watching I think competition is great. If i look at the console space, I feel Sony has just gone into cruise mode. I liked the fire they had last generation.

Competition is good. Console warz is not though, sorry master race.

Competition is, when it isn't being shady, anti-consumer and annoying consumers as a result. healthy honest competition is good for everyone.

Sony managed to do what MS didn't, because they looked at the massive mistakes MS made at the start of the gen, and then they went into cruise control mode. MS is now picking up the pieces that Sony is ignoring, and as a result, Sony will have to catch up to what MS is doing next gen. I've yet to see Epic do this in regards to what Steam has been doing, both games development wise and feature/consumer wise.

I'm done caring about this issue. Initially, I was a little annoyed that I'd possibly have to install yet another launcher, but really, it's not a big deal. I'll continue to buy games where I can get the best price like I do today with steam and GOG.

Console wars, this is not.

Console wars are good. Competition can only lead to good things, and I welcome the P.C Market a chance to improve itself.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

if you actually look at the list of features that you say are "missing", its all bullshit. the average person does not care about 90% of those features listed.

Curators? nobody cares.
Trading cards? nobody cares.
Device streaming? nobody cares.
Broadcasting? theres a million better ways to do this.
Screenshots? same thing.
Marketplace? nobody cares.
Community guides? this is not something only steam does.
Groups? nobody cares.

i look for just a few things. if i can buy games, and have it easy and convenient to play them, thats all i need. and how about all the stuff Epic offers that seems to get sweeped under the rug?

To you perhaps, but to a lot of others and the way it's being analysed, it is.

Console wars are good for consoles that sell ahrsware, but on PC, it really isn't and it becomes anti-consumer. PC gamers don't want this. The PC market has been improving itself for years btw.

Steam has left the quality seal unbroken for some time now, whether it's console wars or not and even if the ES is shit, steam really do need the kick in the hole, perhaps even enough to get them making games again for exclusive content.
It's not even the same thing as both stores are free to download, you don't have to invest in extra hardware so it's a mute point. Regardless, exclusives and the quality they bring are the best part of consoles, they are not a bad thing, the competition is an avenue for the best quality games to be made which these days are often among the few truly finished, polished and top tier games worth full price. Exclusives are the only reason, I and many others are still playing games cause triple A doesn't mean shit anymore.

Going to be honest, even when I played HL and L4D back then, they didn't exactly feel top notch, even playing them now they feel dated.

I'm not sure how something is allowed to be shit, but something else needs a kicking far worse than the new kid on the block, who's clearly trying to act like the new school bully. Steam has been improving itself over the years via a multitude of tools and a store revamp from a year and a half ago (Their major one is still in the works, just like games are when being developed for 8+ years like RDR2).

Valve are still making games though. They've made and released their own card game, while also working on 3 VR games. People who complain "they don't make games" are basically just like me when I complain that Ubisoft doesn't make games I want/like. They also have Campo working on their current game, as well as them likely working on their next game after that (like how MS and Sony will have devs working at this moment in time for next gen games, the same applies to Valve and everyone else).

See, Valve are private, they don't have shareholders to answer to, and they don't feel the ened to constantly pump out sequel after sequel after sequel. They want to make games they want to make and when they want to make them, and hardly anyone on this site seems to notice this, nor pay attention to any videos where Gabe talks about designing and making games at Valve itself (I implore anyone to watch those videos and watch them all the way to the end and learn from them).

When we talk about console wars, we aren't talking about buying the system itself, we're talking about the deals done to force you to use their client , while not giving options to buy those third party games anywhere else, let alone keys from any other storefront at a cheaper price (And Valve allows for this for their own storefront, while Epic does not, not even origin).

Console exclusives of their own design aren't bad for themselves, but holding third party exclusives isn't good for the consumer, especially on PC to just one store. It's been proven so far that Epic holding these games to their storefront has not lowered prices significantly. The lowest they have gone with just Metro is $4, when on Steam, even before day 1 purchases, you could get up to £10 and sometimes £15 off brand new game codes from key sites like GMG, which Steam allows tell sell from. Epic unfortunately does not do this and doesn't want consumers to buy games at cheaper prices, let alone anywhere else.

"best quality" games is more or less a moot point since what you think is best could be trash to someone else. People could still find TF2 entertaining and nice to look at years later, and I could easily bet that Fornite kids would think Tf2 is gutter trash.

If AAA doesn't mean shit, then honestly, neither would anything lower than AAA. You just have to make games people like playing. EPic had people that liked UT and their Moba game, yt they've dropped both of them. Meanwhile Valve are still holding onto their card game, Dota 21 and all their other games. Like Ubisoft, they haven't dropped their titles like Epic has done with two already, with nothing more in terms of unique game development in the works.

Again, bullshit to you, non important to you, important to others, like it or not you don't have a say over what I find important in life, you just don't, just like how I don't have a say over what you find important over other things in life.

Curators?, yeah, actually people do. People have been bitching at Valve for years to "curate" their store, to oust any game that a select group of gamers don't like (because that's how this little game of curation works whether you like it or not), they create tools to allow for users to tailor the storefront to their needs as well as offering youtubers (which Epic is doing as well btw) the position of making their own lists for curated games, which people can then follow and share to others, so yes, those are important to others out there and if Epic are doing it and pushing that out there and people are clamoring for it then it is in fact wanted and needed by one crowd in particular.

Trading cards?, what about cheevos, no one cares for petty little cheevos, right?.

People like to Stream to multiple devices like it or not, be it from tablet to TV or PC to TV, or even devices like the NV Shield.

Streaming is already done in a multitude of ways, Steam having it isn't an issue and is welcomed by the community.

Nah, People love taking screens and sharing them, hence why you see them on every single product page, taken from individual users axcross the globe. That's a fact that people like and use them, diligaf if you don't care.

People have loved the marketplace for years, because like it nor, people love to trade items to one another, that they even do in within the games themselves.

Community guides built directly into their client?, yeah Steam is the only one that does that. Any other guide on any other client that links to you opening a web browser doesn't count as being built in either.

Groups, well yes, people do care about those, because why else would we be seeing thousands if not millions of groups being made on that client each passing day, but those don't matter to you specifically, but they matter to others out there.

Competition is good, but only when the actual competition plays by the rules and isn't a scumbag asshole trying to weasel their way to getting what someone else worked hard for. You do well to remember that. Look at the BR genre, look at all the "I just want more money, fuck competing for anything unique" kind of publishers, that just want the biggest slice of pie. There's nothing unique about that form of "competition", it's just greedy fucks wanting more money, just like we shit all over EA and Activison for wanting, hell even Disney with their remake films.

Steam doesn't need to step up as much as their competition does. The others like bethesda, Uplay, Origin and Epic, as well as Battle.net need to step up their game big time. Diligaf if you don't like those features, doon't use them, but don't stop progress either

i cant read a single sentence from this response without picturing you as some edgy, offended middle schooler.
