Having looked into the streaming situation a bit more this is very true MS are lining Nintendo up to be one of their major clients I can see them pitching cloud tech and offering server services for online to Nintendo. For MS this would mean the entire dedicated portable market would be a consistent userbase for them, Sony right now if all this comes into being would be banging their heads against a wall as it's not a traditional set up like they adept at dealing with, all of Sony's for lack of better words defeats to competition in the gaming space has come from non traditional situations, PSP, PS3 and Vita were beaten out by situations that are unorthodox.

I don't see gaming going fully streaming centric but I can see the streaming side of things becoming a feature for platforms like how online has and at some point Sony would either have to partner up or be forced to create their own.

Nontraditional situations? It seems an apology and bad analysis. Sony lost because the basic strategy has spoiled: it's the same always, fill the platform with all possible games. On the PSP lost because the Nintendo handheld market is much stronger than the console market counterpart. Nintendo prioritizes the handheld market, Sony does not. At Ps3, Sony's hubris( 500 dollars, second job?) plus Microsoft (online better than Sony) and Nintendo (market break, blue ocean and attempt to bring old players back) forces have captured part of the Sony market. Finally, in Psvita, once again, the Nintendo handheld market is always number one for the same, while Sony has abandoned the Vita. And the Ps Vita when it was released, did not present many exclusive qualities, as far as the multimedia part, as happened at the beginning of the PSP

Nope the analysis is fine because as seen by the PS4 the basic strategy hasn't spoiled and is fine, PSP got beaten out by DS a non traditional handheld which targeted the blue ocean strategy which was a very unorthodox situation and one no company had really dealt with this strategy was deployed because dealing with Sony in a traditional sense is hard hence why the GBA was dropped the second the PSP was announced. PS3 even with Sony's mishandling still went on to outsell the 360 in the end what does that tell you? It flat out highlights my point in that in a basic approach set up Sony are always strong the platform that beat the PS3 and quite handily was the Wii another platform with an unorthodox approach once again targeting the blue ocean but with a different style of hardware.

Vita had its wind taken from its sales not just by the 3DS but by the rise of smartphones which did everything Sony aimed to bring to in the portable space including multimedia functions, mobile impacted the portable space that even the 3DS had trouble when it launched only difference is Nintendo knew how to pull through it Sony still unsure on how to deal with the DS brand let alone a new indirect competitor just gave up.

These are unorthodox approaches deployed by Nintendo which beat out those platforms as they didn't fall into the traditional basic approach that Sony dominates and knows how to deal with, when faced with such situations they don't know how to answer back if their basic approach doesn't deal with the problem this is why the Switch has been unhindered could in future go on to outsell other Gen 9 platforms when they arrive as it's another unorthodox set up that basic traditional approaches just don't deal with.

So they want to sell more games by taking advantage of the switch userbase but won't consider the ps4, I always knew they hated sony far more than nintendo, in fact they never hated nintendo in the first place.

Microsoft has shown interest in bringing games and services to PlayStation (link) and "would love to" bring players on PlayStation 4 into their Minecraft ecosystem via Xbox Live login (link).

So far, Sony haven't seemed to be interested though. Maybe in the future?

Agreed.  Not only would their games make more money there, as their audiences are more similar and want more powerful HW, but it will also be too big of an install base to pass up.

This is not about selling games. In a lot of ways this is nothing to do with video games period.

This is about the CLOUD and who is going to control it ... Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, or Google. This is bigger than video games, Microsoft doesn't give a shit (at the top end of the company) about console wars. They do care a lot about the cloud.

The problem with GamerPass on PS4 for Sony is it undermines the old, traditional business model of consoles that Sony is reliant on. That's why they can't allow things like GamerPass or even EA Access.

But if gaming goes streaming centric, Sony is in trouble. It's gonna be one of the big boys (MS, Apple, Amazon, or Google) that likely controls it.

IMO Microsoft has given up on Xbox. I can see them providing their games, services to any platform as a third party.

They want an online monopoly. Forget the consoles, they don't care about those. If they succeed in monopolizing the online base they will ween off of consoles and go third party. We've been talking about this stuff for years Sony has always been standing in their way and choose to go the self sufficient route.

MS wants to control the Cloud. If Amazon or Google win the race for a game streaming service, MS will be very upset.

Sony is small potatoes, Nintendo is basically a non-competitor/friendly colleague in MS' eyes.

If MS is successful in getting the defacto game streaming service, they "win" (at least by their metric).

Highly unlikely. They just renamed Microsoft Game Studios as Xbox Game Studios, and have bought multiple new developers now. There are multiple reliable sources saying that Xbox Scarlett with be announced this year and release next year, with plans to have the most powerful console next gen. Those are not the moves of a 3rd party publisher, 3rd party publishers do not release serious new hardware.

I agree that the Xbox brand isn't going anywhere, and that there's obvious plans to make more hardware, but short of the Nintendo partnership I speculated on earlier where they provide the high end hardware while Nintendo provides the low end, hardware isn't a major focus for them. They definitely seem to be at least trying to transition the Xbox brand to mean more than just consoles. In such a scenario, highly brand loyal Xbox fans will buy the Xbox console, but the brand's identity extends far beyond hardware. In such a world, Microsoft isn't first or third party, it's both, because they make their gaming brand, Xbox, have both a 1st party (Xbox product) and 3rd party (Xbox service) presence across the entire gaming market. This makes them immune to any future where their consoles become unpopular, or home consoles in general become unpopular, or altogether obsolete. It happened to portable consoles, it could happen to home consoles too. If these rumors prove true, I think these moves are Microsoft thinking ahead and future proofing the Xbox brand.

This would be crazy!

It would be a matter of time before we see MS first party titles on Switch 2/ PS5/PS6, if MS does this, IMO.

I've been thinking about this for a couple days now. I must say, if this is true, it's probably the biggest industry news since MS announced their entry into gaming. It would be absolutely massive for Nintendo and MS, obviously. But, it is nearly certain that Sony would do something to either counter, or jump on board. PS Now would work on Switch the same as Gamepass, with the same benefits to both Sony and Ninty. But, really Gamepass on PS might be a possibility too.

The benefits for MS are obvious there. But, I see a big benefit for PS as well. If one can play Forza, Gears, and Halo on PS, there is really no reason left to buy an XB console. That would effectively leave PS as the only real player in the home console space. MS gets their GaaS money, Sony gets rid of their main competitor in hardware. Gamers get all the games from both. Win-win-win.

Sony could also put PS Now on other devices. That's probably a more likely scenario. But, it doesn't have the same Earth shattering implications. So, it's not as fun to BS about in this forum....

That's right, I think Sony will probably be in a big trouble in the next gen, too.

Granted that all the big players (Google, Amazon, Microsoft) will offer a gaming service full of ALL the new games that will come, will Sony be able to compete with them?

Costumers want the best service at the lowest price (like Netflix is), a streaming service that is fast, reliable, cheap and with all the new releases available at day 1 (new games from ea, squarenix, capcom, bethesda etc), can Sony offer a better/cheaper cloud/streaming infrastructure than Google, for example? Can also Sony maintain all of their third-parties exclusives?

I doubt so :(

Maybe the VR can become a strong selling point for the Playstation brand, but it needs to evolve further.

Nintendo on the other side, is quite in a safe place in my opinion, because they have built a strong image, have their unique way of making games, strong characters and worlds, a very loyal fanbase that really wants new games from the series they produce from more than 35 years. If you want to play a Mario, Zelda or Pokemon game you need a Nintendo hardware. Also, partnership with Microsoft for a streaming service will make a Nintendo console even more valuable, giving a costumer the possibility to play virtually ANY game plus Nintendo original games.
