Forums - Sales Discussion - Which consoles sold more between lauch day and the launch date of the following generation?

I wonder, we always compare the total number of consoles sales, but that can be impacted by the following gen. Example: The PS2 probably would have not sold 155 Million if the PS3 was more affordable at lauch, if It lauched at 400 instead of 600 USS, probably the ps3 would have sold more and ps2 less.

On the other side, the WII sold like a rocket, untill it faded away quickly.

Does anyone have data of consoles sold between the 1st day of the consoles and the 1st day of next gen replacement?

Knock yourself out. Just pick the week where the new consoles are released and you will have the total of the consoles until then.

It only helps for 7 th gen.

But reading some stuff I came to the conclusion that even though PS3 could have improve PS2 sales because of its price, PS2 is the best selling console until next gen.

The only 3 consoles that reached 100 millon are PS2, PS1 and Wii

By the time Wii U was out, Wii was selling close to 97 million consoles.

But even one year before the PS3 was out, PS2 reached 100 million shipments on nov 2006. 5 years and 9 months after launch date.

PS1 needed more than 9 years for that, so Im sure that by the time PS2 appeared, PS1 sold less than Wii.

PS2, by March 2007, only 4 months and some after PS3 introduction, shipped near 118 million consoles. Insane.

So, It will be a race between PS2 and PS4 to be the best selling console until next gen replacement appears.

actually I found an article about that.

Here are numbers for all the consoles I could find semi-solid data on. Note: These aren't definitive numbers, they're just the shipment numbers that were released closest to the date of their successors' releases. For that reason, you should take these numbers with a 1-2 million margin of error in either direction.

DS - 144.59M
GB - 113.72M
PS2 - 111.25M
Wii - 97.18M
PS3/X360 - 80M
PSP - 74.76M
PS1 - 71.82M
3DS - 65.3M
GBA - 58.13M
SNES - 42.31M
N64 - 32.71M
Xbox - 24.00M
GCN - 21.20M
WiiU - 13.56M

For most of these figures, I picked the last fiscal quarter in which the console did not have a successor on the market. However, because the data is spotty in a lot of places:

-N64 includes the launch quarter of GCN in Japan, which was 09/2001
-GB includes the launch quarter of GBA in Japan, which was 03/2001
-PS2 is hardware production units, not sell-in
-Xbox includes the launch quarter of Xbox 360 in North America, which was 12/2005
-PS3 and X360 were non-standard shipment figures released in November and October 2006, respectively

I didn't realize that the PS2 sold an additional 40+ million units after the PS3 launched. That's insane and that number alone puts it above the Xbox and GameCube LTD numbers.

So besides mobile consoles, PS2 is the indisputable king of home consoles from gen to next gen.

There is something amazing too from those numbers. PS3 almost stop selling after PS4 was out.

But PS1 sold a lot more reaching more than 100 million units.

Acording to that info PS3 sold like 7 Million more after PS4, but PS1 sold 30 Million more!

And with 94 Million units shipped, PS4 can sell very close if not surpassing PS2 from gen to gen.

What is a GCN? Any relation to the Cube/GC?

A big reason for PS1 & PS2 having such long legs is that they released much later in many developing countries. This isnt nearly as true for PS4 so its legs likely wont be nearly as long.

It will be better than PS3 but much less than PS1, I'm going to say 15-20 million.

Well then we can officially say that PS4 will be the 2nd highest selling home console of all time.
