Forums - PC Discussion - Metro dev says next game won't be on PC if players boycott. EDIT: Official Statement made

Lol this is one of the worst PR responses by anyone you're being boycotted because of an underhanded move you pulled 2 weeks before launch and now you want to threaten people? Good luck with that.

^

So much this.
Seriously screw them if this is how they view their fans that support them and buy their games.
Why is it so hard for dev's to get, people dont like useing a million differnt stores? Steam or GOG or gtfo.

threating to no longer support pc, if pc users dont just automatically go in and back their store system..... that is not the way.

I don't agree with the shitty practice but when you vote with your wallet it doesnt mean the outcome will be the one you were hoping for, companies will look out what's best for them ( aka what they think is best) if PC gamers on mass avoid their product they will continue what's best for them and will leave that market it's pretty simple, you can't complain if they pull a product people are not buying.

Instead of a flat out boycott, can't players just wait until the timed exclusivity runs out and then buy on Steam to make a point? Or is the Metro dev counting that as part of the boycott?

I'm in the camp that more competition to Steam is a good thing and if players don't want to support Epic that's fine. Exclusives are the norm with consoles and unlike consoles, you don't even have to spend more for a different PC game service (no hardware purchase or online subscription necessary).

As a console player, this looks like entitled whining, but that's not all uncommon for the "PC Master Race." Or maybe there's just something I'm not seeing.

EDIT: So I, was unaware of the 2 weeks to release notice preorder customers were given and the lack of basic functions the Epic Games Store has over Steam (no reviews, always online etc). I was also unaware of the plethora of Epic games Fortnite accounts that recently got hacked.

Having learned all of that, I understand the resentment. This isn't the first time Deep Silver pulled a dick move, didn't the last Metro game lock an entire difficulty mode behind Gamestop preorders?

One thing of note, it's likely the publisher, Deep Silver's decision and not the devs, so if you still wanted the game, maybe a console purchase? I'm not into the series much, but I'm not really sure what I would do in this circumstance.

I'm going to kind of ignore the outrage in the thread and just talk about what the developer seems to be saying, though obviously it's translated by Google and not entirely trustworthy.

From the studio standpoint, I do understand his frustration. Fans are going to skip something they worked on for years because they don't want to download a launcher? I'd have trouble with that, too. Of course, what he's missing is that a lot of buyers aren't necessarily deep level fans, they're people who can be swayed one way or the other by simple things. There has been hundreds of times when I've bought one game over another because of a stray line or text or a random user review. It's not black and white.

As for the line that has everyone grabbing the noose, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me. "If at all all the PC players announce a boycott of the Metro," makes it sound as though he's talking about the game having close to zero sales on PC, which, obviously, would make them reconsider the platform for future games in the series. I mean, yeah. Why would that shock anyone?

A general question: Isn't the whole exclusivity deal only a problem for PC gamers who've begun to view the PC like a console?

Different stores have different features:

Such deals forcefully remove the element of choice so even if one store gives the publisher $2 more the consumer may still be getting the short end of the stick even with a discount.

Well, that's an ignorant and childish generalization.  Luckily, I'm not going to be like you and judge all console players based on your example.

This developer was probably a bit emotional because of the shit storm (death threats etc. the usual internet things) but this statement is one of the worst reactions to a shit storm I've ever seen.
No matter if you're on the boycotters side or not it's economically stupid and a super obvious bluff.
Dev:"If your boycott is successful our future games won't come to PC!"
Con:"We have literally thousands of games every year to play on PC and you will probably lose 30% of your consumers."
Dev:"Oh..."
It's almost always worth to port a game to PC because it's super easy and cheap. It's not a coincidence the all the indies and many very niche japanese games are on PC.

I agree. It's really quite sad. Developers have made similar comments before which is obviously out of frustration. To them, it's like someone disregarding years of work for a decision you didn't even make. Which is why I hope the game is still successful.  Personally, while it makes me want to buy the game less, I don't think they lost a sale. The first Metro was not that good imo and I was already cautious with this one. But hope that they get enough sales to justify the hard work, anyways.

I have to respect the developers here, not giving in to entitled gamers, and standing their ground.

This is easy for them to say because if it doesnt do well, there's no harm in taking it off PC anyways.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I mean, the game is coming to PC anyway. If the Steam hardcore can't bite the bullet and buy it off another store, then that's their problem. At least they're free services to use, unlike when this happens in the television space.
