Nintendo reports there are now 20 million sellers for the Switch.

And 8 of those 20 are third party.

Well, at this stage it looks like 3DS is not going to reach the lifetime sales of the GBA or PSP, leaving it as as Nintendo's lowest selling portable and falling short of even the loser of last gen's portable war.

Some fun facts:
Since release, Splatoon 2 has shipped 3.33 million in Japan. Should eventually leg it out to 4 million.
I'm actually interested in seeing which game will reach that mark first, Splatoon 2, Smash Bros., Animal Crossing, or Pokemon Gen 8?

Also, the Switch version of Breath of the Wild has shipped 1.46 million in Japan alone, which means the Switch version by itself has surpassed Ocarina of Time. And depending on how much the Wii U version shipped (120k in one month), by now Breath of the Wild has probably become the best selling Zelda game of all time in Japan, even surpassing the original.

The software on Switch is insane. 32 million units shipped with FIVE 10+ million sellers!!!!!

Pokemon, Super Mario Party and Smash did extremely well and the quarterly numbers for Switch were good.

It's obvious Labo has been a flop and not driven hardware sales in anyway whatsoever. It was clear Nintendo anticipated Labo helping drive Switch up to 20 million units. The revision down to 17 million now seems too conservative - if sales remain flat versus last year, shipments would come in at ~17.4 million. I'm still expecting a quarter in the 3 to 3.5 million range, so 17 to 17.9 million for the financial year, which keeps Switch tracking similarly to PS4, launch-aligned.

The lesson to Nintendo should be to pace their releases consistently. Here's hoping Luigi's Mansion 3, Animal Crossing and Pokemon generation 8 are paced out, with the smaller titles (Fire Emblem, Daemon X Machina, Marvel Ultimate Alliance etc) coming at a regular clip, too. A Direct in the next couple of weeks seems likely, given the leaks of third party ports this week (AC 3, Darksiders).

Agree, Q1 and Q3 were slower than expected for Nintendo, and most likely they expecting that Labo will move much more units.

INSANE SALES FOR SMASH ULTIMATE!!!!
Pokemon reached 10mil!!!! Any comparisons to past pokemon games? I think it did amazingly considering how much they changed the gameplay.
Splatoon 2 is getting really close to 10mil!!!

RIP 20 million! Nice knowing that I believed in you........

And Super Mario Party crosses 5mil!!!! Probably the only party game right now that can pull these numbers!
And any comparisons to past Mario Tennis games?

Should be easy for Switch to surpass the 3DS then. GBA and PSP would just be a small step so PS3 and 360 become the target. (~85m)

I was skeptical in the "Will Nintendo ship 20m Switch units" thread. They already knew they wouldn't make that number when Furukawa called it an ambitious goal a month or so ago. Looks like I was right and I stand by my hypothesis: Nintendo expected Labo to do big numbers but Labo never was a blue ocean product like the games on Wii and DS. Thus, it predictably failed to push hardware.

On a positive note, the results are still good and software sales are outstanding. But Nintendo has to do something this year to push sales. I'm skeptical about the Switch selling 20m+ as of late. Q1 2019 (calendar year) looks barren from a software perspective and if we don't get a Direct in the next days, I expect it to stay that way. Metroid's development reboot certainly makes it harder to fill up the release schedule for the year. I hope we will get a Direct soon and Nintendo will prove me wrong.

They'll also need a price cut this year as the Switch is somewhat underperforming in Japan compared to the 3DS (and DS as well, of course). It's time to drop 3DS development once and for all now and focus on the Switch. What made the DS and Wii sell like crazy were the steady streams of software. And Nintendo could've had such a steady stream for Switch last year if those 3DS games had been Switch titles (or cross-platform) instead.

Pokemon games for reference

SM - 14.69m (3.81m Japan / 10.88m ROTW)
XY - 11.61m (4.34m Japan / 7.27m ROTW)
Let's Go 10.0m (1.85m Japan / 8.16m ROTW)
ORAS - 9.35m (2.92m Japan / 6.43m ROTW)
USUM - 7.71m (2.37m Japan / 5.3m ROTW)

Weaker in Japan but much stronger in the west.

Not surprised from the west. I saw more videos of people playing pokemon Go in other countries than in Japan (or they just dont record people playing in Japan). It has 9 more months to gather tonnes of sales before next Gen comes out.

Pocky Lover Boy!

Stellar number, but everyone expected stellar numbers so in comparison, 9,4 million in 3 months seem disapointing, just like the december npd results where everyone was disapointed by the 1.7 million Switch did instead of 2+ million.

Can we make a "Switch sales surpassed N64's sales" or is it too soon yet ? :D
