Was the PS3 not successful?

Because Sony loss billions of money in Ps3' sales

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/blog/2008/jun/25/sonyhaslostmorethan3bill

https://www.cnet.com/news/sony-still-losing-on-every-playstation-3-it-sells/

The Ps3 was not a good profitable project in long run.  The PSP and PS3 years was the worst profitwise years for Sony.

And without PS3 investment in games by Sony, we don't have PS4 success either. So in the end, i think PS3 was succesful to Sony because it produced the anticipation and confidence in their consumers to buy a PS4. You can say it was the most expensive advertisement ever if you want. Because yes, PS4 did not sell as well worldwide as it has done just because Microsoft botched XBO announcement. PS4 sold like it did during its first years because PS3 consumers where completely happy with their console  and its games and wanted more of the same with PS4 but better, like people keep buying Mario, GTA, COD, FIFA, etc....

If PS3 was not succesful like some of you have said, PS4 would have never been the success it was at launch...

Sounds about right. Even if the PS5 releases in March 2020 the NS should still take the year as I expect that to be its peak year. Or maybe 2019.

I think Sony is up to something big this year.  They're not coming to E3 - so I think they're going to hold their own event to announce PS5.  Think they will announce it will launch early next year.  At the same time they'll drop the PS4 price to $249 - then have an extended $199 price promotion throughout the holidays.  If PS5 is backwards compatible to PS4 games- then I think the PS4 has a good chance of beating the Switch again this year.

I wouldn't count on a lot of that. Only way the PS4 even hits 16M this year is if there is a permanent drop to $199 around june the latest. Anytime later than that and it won't really do much. The PS4 has zero chance of beating the NS this year.

Well unless nintendo doesn't release a single game on the platform and increases its price to $399......

Great run.
But 2019 is switch's. 2020 we will probably have ps5, but not for the entire year.
Also, ps4 took 5 years to reach its peak. If switch keep a strong momentum for years (considering it have space to price drops and revisions), it can still outsell ps5 first 2 or 3 years.

It took it 4 years. But there is a relationship between price, software and time to reach peak year. Basically more expensive hardware takes longer to peak. Like the PS3 before it, the PS4 peaked when it hit that $299 price point. I am guessing for the NS it can either peak at that price point or it needs to hit like $199/$250 or something.

But dropping from $299 to $199 vs $399 to $299 is not as easy as it sounds...... One is a 33% drop and the other is a 25% drop.

People are already predicting success for the PS5 without knowing a damn thing about it. Reminds me of the talk just before the PS3 launch.

On the other hand we already know that the Switch is a successful console that is selling comparably to the PS4. Isn't it more logical prediction that the Switch will have the top spot for the next 4+ years?

No it is not. Its actually silly to even think that. Cause the next 4+ years means that the switch sells more worldwide till 2023 at least and beyond. By then it will be at least 6yrs old. For that to happen it has to sell at least 18M/yr for the next 4+ years or sony comes with a PS3 level type of F*** up with the PS5 and release it at $599.

The NS is lower priced than what the PS4 was at launch.... it will see its own peak sooner than the PS4 did and it should be selling at a faster rate than the PS4.

No competition will do that (record sales)

Hubris is nearly always accompanied by a fall and Sony is facing the biggest competition ever.

What is this competition you speak of? The XB4? Cause it sure can't be the NS. Like didn't the switch launch in the same year that went on to be the PS4s peak year? And the following year even with a 10% drop in sales from its peak year it still outsold the NS.

So again..... what is this biggest competition you speak of?

Sony is worldwide sales king and there is no reasons it won't win again in 2019 if there is a permanent price cut down to 200 for the slim and 250 for the pro or maybe 300 more realisticly. Ghost of tsushima, last of us 2, death stranding, days gone etc will maintain interest in it as well

No 2019 is definitely a Switch win. At this point in a systems life (6th year) price cuts dont lead to YoY growth, they just help the decline from not being as large. Also, Switch has the potential to receive its own price cut or revision anyway and has big games as well like Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing & Pokemon Gen 8.

I'm guessing PS4 will see a 10-20% YoY drop and NSW will see a 10-20% YoY gain.

Sounds about right.

Only way a price drop gets PS4 to 17M/18M this year is if its dropped to $199 this month and sold at $99 during the holidays lol.

Because of their track record. 3/4 of their consoles have been dominant and did over 100 million so unless they make another huge mistake like pricing PS5 $200-300 more than the competition than they should have another huge hit on their hands.

No, 2019 & 2020 are very safe bets for Switch to win as PS4 will see steady decline while Switch should be at its peak in those years. 2021 is also possible, it depends on how strong PS5 starts out and how much Switch declines that year so I'll say 50/50. 2022 will almost definitely be PS5 win, it will start to hit its stride while Switch will really be showing its age.

False.  You forgot to include the PSP and Vita.  Sony loses to Nintendo 50% of the time.  Their track record is the same as a coin flip.

Also, you are already declaring 2022 victory for PS5 and you don't know anything about it.  Everything we know about the PS5 comes from our own imagination.  Or do you have an insider source that the rest of us don't have?  All of these declarations about the PS5 are based on make believe and also on a track record that Sony doesn't actually have.

Nope, they are irrelevant when discussing their home consoles.

I find your lack of faith in PS4.......disturbing.

This is an amazing achievement for Sony; 8 years in a row the Top selling console worldwide. PS4 is a true beast, and it will do extremely well in 2019 as well.
Congrats Sony!

Lol... its not a lack of faith. Its just being realistic with where the console is at and where the market is.

As it stands, the only real thing that can have a meaningful effect on PS4 sales is price. The PS4 is just at that point in its life where the majority or all its major console selling software has been released. The COD, RDR/GTA, GOW/TLOU, Uncharted...etc crowds have all bought their PS4s.

The people that haven't bought one now are either to young to buy it or still find $299 to expensive. TLOU2 is not going to make 1M more people buy a PS4. At best it will drive sales up by like 100k or 200k. I mean TLOU2 will do more for sales of a PS5 than it will currently do fr the PS4.

All sony can d now is slow down the pace of decline, and the only way they do that is by dropping the price.

If Sony go with a price cut this month with $199, and $99 during the holidays season, it would crush Nintendo Switch and sell 19-20M. I think you were kidding though.

I was just joking...XD

But i disagree a lot in something you said. TLOU 2 won't affect more PS5 sales than PS4 ones... When PS5 launches it will sell everything Sony is capable to produce. If they produce 5M before year ends, they will sell them, if it's 6M the same. It doesn't need a TLOU II to sell, like PS4 didn't need any blockbuster exclusve game to sell more than 4M in just a month, even without Japan back in 2013.

And if PS4 indeed lowed the price to 200€ this month and 99€ in the holiday season it could sell more than 17-18M, more like 20M...lol.
