This might end up being a launch title for the switch successor.

Simultaneous release on the Switch and new Switch like Breath of the Wild?  Or will they lock it to the next Switch to boost sales on the new system?  I don't think they would do that.  This is such a PR fiasco for them and denying the game to current Switch owners would be an even worse image.  If it does end up being a launch title for the next system I can guarantee you'll also be playing it on your Switch day and date.

^ this, towards the end of the Switch life, it ll release and then also on the Switch successor.

I think in the end is the best decision to delay the game, though is a shame we won't be getting it anytime soon.

Huh... this news is quite, uh, out of the blue...

I will say, I very much appreciate Nintendo's commitment to quality of a games that they publish.

Seeing what Sony was willing to pull with pushing for ultra low quality Resistance and Call of Duty on Vita and even marketing and bundling COD to sucker some wallets before everyone got burned, it is night and day in comparison with how Nintendo has approached the Nintendo Switch.

I do wish they were not as lax with games launching rather lean and patching later like Mario Tennis did.

I myself am not really into Metroid (I only really liked Super metroid/Fusion/Zero Mission, but, even then, I perfer SOTN and the GBA/DS Castlevania games over those anyway) so this news is sort of moot for me anyway.

That said, I am curious about Pikmin 4 and where it is in development after all these years, some transparency on that game would certainly be welcome at this point...

Frankly, Nintendo was stupid to just go "Oh we'll make MP4 ourselves", when they have NEVER made a first person game of any meaningful kind, this entire time.

At the same time, people shouldn't get too excited about Retro being involved now. For one thing, literally all of the key figures who made the original MP games, are long gone now. So the same talent that made those games, who had that vision, are no longer in-house. Secondly, what the hell has Retro been working on since 2014? Aside from helping port DKCR. They've had a top secret project going for years, yet there hasn't been a picture, not even a hint as to what it is. Is that trashed now, in favor of MP4?

I've always wanted to see what Retro could do on their own, and not merely be the "Metroid and DK" development house that they've been. And frankly, I'd be far more interested in a (fully, hand drawn) 2D Super Metroid sequel (which, you know, is welcome to ignore the dumber story points of Fusion, and ignore Other M completely), than I am for MP4. I'm not against MP4 happening, but I was good with the trilogy ending as just a trilogy.

To be fair, we don't know whether or not Nintendo tried to make the game themselves. Rumor has it that they handled it to Bandai Namco.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Restarting from scratch? hmmm.... this means 2022-2023 atleast right? Oh well.

I’m honestly very disappointed. 2021-2022 release date.

Seriously, very very disappointed with the management of the game.

The soonest you ll see this is 2022, imo.

:(

Most likely.

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

The delay sucks, but this is a million times better than taking the risk of another Other M. It shows Nintendo is taking this project very seriously and I appreciate them being honest and upfront about it.

This just makes me more curious about what Retro has been up to this whole time. Is that game almost done? Have they been on vacation for years? Were they lost in the 11th dimension again?

Disappointing news to hear, but I'm glad they are being very open with us about the development of this game. probably shouldn't have been announced so soon, but it was something that had to be done. I really hope that with this news, that does not mean the Star Fox Racing game is cancelled. It sounded so amazing! Retro only has 130 workers according to LinkedIn. With a shit ton of outsourcing, its possible they might have Metriod in per-production right now. It could also mean Star Fox racing is basically done. I just hope that it doesn't mean Star Fox Racing got canned. It was one of my most looked forward to games this year.

Anyways, don't expect this to launch until 2022 at the earliest. Probably 2023 with a split generation launch.

I don't think Nintendo generally takes 3-4 years to make a new game except for maybe Zelda. Also, while they said they are starting over, I'm sure there are plenty of assets already made (or an engine worked on) for the game that they won't restart on, unless they are going for a different art style. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't release it until then, to make it a launch title for Switch 2, but I doubt it will take them that long to make it personally.
