Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Update on Metroid Prime 4: Development restart. Retro Studios + Tanabe now working on it

Welp, that's one less game I can worry about this year.

In all seriousness, I'm willing to wait as long as necessary if it means Prime 4 will be on par or even better than the first Prime, which probably won't happen considering how legendary that game was, but time will tell I guess.

On an unrelated note, to anyone attached to Miyamoto's "a rushed game is forever bad, a delayed game is eventually good" quote, pls don't; that was what he said when Star Fox Zero got delayed, and I'm pretty sure most of us can agree that a delay didn't automatically turn that game into a masterpiece...

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Well that sucks.

He never said that during Star Fox Zero's development.

And times have changed since he made that quote. Of course, we have games like Fallout 76, Star Wars Battlefront, Evolve, No Man's Sky, etc. that had fundamental or special feature flaws that affected their reception when they initially released. Yes, patches are a thing, but you still want a fundamentally sound game with enough features to satisfy consumers from the jump during this day and age. Patches can improve a game, but it cannot bring back everyone waiting for the games to be good or functional, especially since there are so many other games awaiting to get people's attention.

aight nvm, I swore he said that when Zero got delayed, lmao.

I didnt expected it in 2019, and i hadnt would be surprised if it wasnt in 2020 as well.
Now is going to take a long while. They have their retro project in development, and also could have a prime trilogy in between to calm the fans, so, they might not have it in full development for a while yet. It might be a 2023, 2024 game, maybe same situation of BotW, but for switch/switch 2
But is good to know that the are pursuing quality above all. I hope it can be like the BotW of metroid.

I wasn't expecting the game to come until 2021 anyway so I'm good. 2019 is already well packed imo.

I just hope Nintendo realizes that Metroid is a franchise loved by adults and even if gameplay is more important than anything else, those adults want to see a compelling story which is partly told in atmospheric cut scenes. After all, Metroid is the most cinematic franchise Nintendo has. It was originally heavily based on the Alien movie, so to give Metroid Prime 4 a heavy cinematic flair is a must. Cut scenes are still a big weakness of Nintendo. I understand that for most of their other franchises to invest too much into cut scenes is a waste of money, it's not true for Metroid. Not only the quality must be nailed but also the quantity and please let the cute scenes be longer than 1 minute.

My passing on the Switch is officially validated now.  I wonder if they'll queue up Pikmin 4 now...

It's funny you write that ... when I re-opened this thread I was LITERALLY just thinking "Oh man, I need some perspective, I wonder how Pikmin fans feel!!!"

I feel they should at least put the next Pikmin on their next console.  I'm planning on getting their next piece of hardware as a day 1 adopter.

Apparently there is a little more to the delay, according to Game Informer's senior editor Imran Khan and his sources.
https://mynintendonews.com/2019/01/25/game-informer-senior-editor-tweets-what-hes-heard-regarding-metroid-prime-4/

It looks like Nintendo initially aimed to have multiple teams from different countries work on different aspects on the game, which apparently is not an uncommon practice in AAA development at least. Then, they decided, as development was not going where Nintendo wanted it to go to meet their standards, they decided to redo everything under their own internal team under one roof with Retro Studios.

Not many studios are capable of doing that with good results and, apparently, Nintendo isn't one of them. At least they got the right game for this experiment, big enough to need lots of resources but not too critical/important for Nintendo as games like Mario, Zelda or Smash.

The part  of that article when it says that Retro made a demo to try to get the project and that Nintendo liked it sound promising. At least it gives the impression that they know what they want to do with the game.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

No thank you. The only Metroid game with cutscenes is Other M and we all know how that turned out.
