Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dark Souls is overrated, it simply isn't fun

After playkng souls 1 back in 2010 and not liking it all that much, giving up fairly early I dedicated myself to Bloodborne to see what the hype was about. It took be over 10 hours to get what bloodborne was as a game and probably double that to realize why the souls formula is so damn good. Darksouls 3 is still the pinnacle for me (other than BB which is better) I think Darksouls 2 is a piece of janky shit and Dark souls 1 is starting to age for sure so It depends on the souls game, I'd only ever recommend DS3 and BB in 2019 to someone who hasn't played the games before. It's certainly a series that you get the most enjoyment out of over a longer period of time and the macro aspect of the games like the RPG elements, progression and exploration than the minute to minute game play and combat but you WILL find a weapon or a playstyle that suits you and you WILL find that you love the combat when you find those and get into a groove.

Dark Souls came out in September 2011.

Beating a huge dragon only wearing a loincloth was pretty funny though

i played bloodborne for about 15 hours and never really got into it. lots of stuff to like, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Souls games are kinda addicting for me cause they give me an adrenaline rush, some bosses feel like being in a rollercoaster. :p

Finished Dark Souls 3 the other day. Game overall was easier than the first two in my opinion although it has some of hardest bosses. Still better than DS2. The adrenaline-rush after killing Midir was pretty high probably the boss i spent the most time on actually in Dark Souls or Bloodborne. But after killing all the bosses in Dark Souls 1, 3 and Bloodborne i can definitely say Dark Sales is really fun and not overrated. Now i can finally do Sekiro

Having ended Demon Soul, Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne, I totally get what you mean actually.

The games have their fair share of design improvements to be made, which at time seemed to receive a pass because they were actually things to make it ''harder''.
One could easily point to how Dark Souls improved over demon's hub design, and Bloodborne over the overall pace in battle, not to say atmosphere

While I enjoy my first time with each, Bloodborne is problably the only one which I would play again. I was about to get DS 3 actually, because I really want to see if it was a ''step back'' (in my opinion) from Bloodborne or if it grew with it.

Definitely an improvement while keeping it separate from Bloodborne, they gameplay is faster (still not as much as Bloodborne) while keeping an heavy feel for both overweight weapons and armor.

I hope they will use Sekiro's parry timing for the next games if they are to make any Soulsborne again tho.

Also OT : DS1 is extremely unfair and sometimes has shitty level design (Cappra demon for one), but overall, it was a great experience and I come back to it everyonce in a while. Playing remaster now and will play DS3 again after as I'll probably feel like it. It's fun, but each person has to find its own build and pace. I personally play offline all the time, for example, because I don't want to deal with invaders and feel the boss aren't balanced for multiple players (though a few require NPC sacrifices).

Use a guide.
That was exactly my feeling with Bloodborne (my first souls game).
Once I used a guide it clicked to me. And for Dark Souls, even with my experience with Bloodborne, still has to use a guide.

never really needed a guide, the messages people have left were in most cases really helpful

Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, etc--I knew before going in that, while popular and well reviewed, they just weren't my type of game. I have nothing negative to say about them or anyone who enjoys them. I just have particular preferences. I think you're in that same boat.
