Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dark Souls is overrated, it simply isn't fun

So I never played any of the Dar Souls games and now when the remaster came to Switch I got it. I had some expectations since I’ve heard a lot of praise for it (and also some negatives).

As anyone, that have seen my previous posts, know I’m a fan of difficult games. ”Nintendo hard” does not scare me and all the talk about DS being difficult and unforgiving got me really interested.

The good:

-The game is truly unforgiving, I’ve had my fair share of ”YOU DIED”. But it neve feels cheap, it can always be traced to me doing something wrong (or not knowing how to tackle a new enemy type).

The bad:

-It’s samey, so far in the game it’s mostly the same enemy type and the few variations in enemy types mainly are handled the same way over and over again.

-There’s nothing interesting to do in the game, exploration is lackluster, all there is the samey combat sprinkeled with the occational different enemy type that demands a new angle of attack.

-I don’t know what it is but the game, to me, just feels tedious. No fun, just grind ”oh an enemy: block, shield parry and counter attack” rinse and repeat, or ”oh an enemy: wait for attack, dodge, counter attack”.

All of above are truly subjective, but I personally will probably never finish the game. I’m 10-12 h in and simply don’t get hooked.

Truly some amazing arguments here. Sheer powerful points such as "I don’t know what it is but the game, to me, just feels tedious" and "I’m 10-12 h in and simply don’t get hooked" provide the backbone for a well thought-out critique and thus justification of why Dark Souls is truly overrated. You sir have convinced me - it went from being one of my favorite games ever to being a title which I genuinely hate and I am now calling up Sony support as we speak to see if I can get a possible refund. I didn't think it could be done, but you did it.

I didn't like it much at first back in days - but that's because 8 years before Demon's Souls released there was this little known PC game called Severance: Blade of Darkness that mostly did what Souls did much later, though without respawn mechanism, but with much better combat - so at first Souls felt to me fairly clunky and not so innovative as others claimed...but I gave it a shot, cause in this age of AAA dreck, every AA game even resembling something that is different is more than welcome in my book.

So...to this day, after playing and finishing all 4 Souls, I still feel that combat is quite average, though more than satisfactory, but what makes it stand out is the atmosphere and level design, which are superb - and this is what made Souls only franchise in last 15+ years to get on my Top 10 IPs with 3 or more entries.

I'm the odd one, I like DS2 the most, largely due to setting that resembles medieval fantasy more than other Souls games, plus I really liked whole progressive hollowing/human effigy mechanism.

Welp, it's not your cup of tea and that's perfectly ok. In the end it is always subjective if you like a certain game or not. I for example hate Bioshock with a passion and I don't care how many good reviews it got. I also friggin' love Final Fantasy XIII and couldn't care less about the fact that just about every other person on the planet hates the game.

So don't worry about it. Just play something else and, most importantly, have fun!

Yep, this is the best advice. Unfortunately you're not always going to "get" what other people might "get", you're not always going to like what others like no matter how much you may want to. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it just means your not going to like everything.

I really regret not playing these games sooner. Played Bloodborne and Dark Souls so far and have pretty much loved both. Expect the archer in Anor Londo, fuck the archers in Anor Londo

I wasn't much of a fan of Dark Souls compared to Demon's Souls. Dark Souls 2 was even worse. Dark Souls 3 was truly very fun, and Bloodborne was alright. So some people like them all, some people only like 1 or 2 entries. At the very least I would try Dark Souls 3 or Bloodborne, because they have a very different atmosphere to Dark Souls.

I’m truly sorry for having a different subjective opinion than you.

Just out of curiosity, how many hours should I play before it becomes more fun?

Dark Souls is amazing game, and if any deserves even more praise and more play need to play this phenomenal game, atmosphere and gameplay of Dark Sousl games cant be compared with any other game.

I get its not game for everyone, but all arguments from OP are wrong, for instance Dark Souls have great enemy variety not bad, also combat is one of best combats in industry of games, implying its bad or grind don't have nothing with reality.

You fundamentally misunderstand. I champion subjectivity. The OP is just funny because it describes an experience that shouldn't be out of the ordinary for anyone with a decent amount of gaming knowledge under their belt. You are describing an experience which you don't hate, and like in some ways, but overall find boring, and you don't see the "hype" in it so to speak. I don't think this is uncommon, it happens to me all the time and I'd imagine to most people who game it's happened at least a few times. It's not exactly something worth calling a lot of attention to - you think it's not as good as other people, cool, and?

Now if the points made in the OP were convincing then there would be something more substantial to respond to. Instead, and I think you kind of admit this in the OP, you just don't like the game and list some very general points which could be interpreted in a lot of ways in-game.

So yeah, I wrote that not because your opinion is "wrong", it isn't, I wrote it to contrast the very big claim in the title with the very humble and personal (but also not very detailed) take on the game. The thread title reads like it's trying to make a convincing statement to argue for but all that was written was a neat little hot take.

And I think you've spent enough time, lol. I am impressed you stuck with it that long if you found it boring. I don't think it's for you. There is no set amount of time you should spend by the way. It is up to you how much you want to try out a game before continuing or quitting.
