Switch is in a different niche and won't impact PS5, just like it isn't impacting PS4. And letting MS go first has advantages for Sony; it lets them see Xbox's hand and work to counter it by making sure the PS5 is superior.

I see.  So you don't think that Nintendo and Sony are competing anymore?  For example, the DS never really competed with the PS3 and the 3DS never competed with the PS4.  Now that Nintendo only has one console, you think it isn't competing with Sony anymore at all?  Or do you even think the Wii U was competing with PS4?  I definitely think the Wii U and PS4 were competing.

If Switch was directly competing with Playstation, Switch's success would've resulted in PS4 sales slumping; that hasn't happened. Similarly, PS5 won't take sales away from Switch.

Untrue.

The Wii launched to great success.  It didn't hamper the sales of the PS2 at all.  The hardware power levels of the Wii and PS2 were much closer than the Wii and PS3, in fact.  But the Wii was breaking sales records at the same that the PS2 was having extremely strong legs.  This is very much like the relationship between the Switch and PS4.

On the other hand the Wii WAS impacting PS3 sales.  Wii was breaking sales records and PS3 was majorly struggling for its first few years.  Wii was not competing with PS2, but it was competing with PS3.  The Wii was not competing with the Playstation brand as a whole.  It was competing with a very specific console, the PS3 and the PS3 alone.z

This is what people should expect when the PS5 launches.  The Switch is not competing with the PS4, but it is competing with the PS5.  PS5 is going to struggle just like the PS3 struggled.  And the PS4 is not hampered by the Switch's success just like the PS2 was not hampered by the Wii's success.

PS3's struggles were the result of its own excessive price, initially weak software, and bad PR.

PS5 will not be affected by the Switch because people buy them for totally different reasons.  The people buying PS4s, which is primarily those who want mainstream AAA games, will never be satisfied with a Switch, so it will not draw them away.

Sony made bad decisions with the PS3, and therefore it lost to the competition.  Customers chose a different console, because the PS3 was not a good choice.  Sales of one console go up while another go down.  That is competition.

We were debating PS5 vs. Switch competition (or lack thereof).  But the bigger question is if you think the PS3 was competing with the Wii.  I definitely think the PS3 competed with the Wii.  Some of those PS2 customers bought a Wii instead of a PS3 (and some bought a XBox360). The Wii impacted the sales of the PS3.  That is how competition works.

We've gone way off topic now. This thread is about Xbox One sales, not competition between Wii/PS3 or Switch/PS4.

With studio purchases in 2017 and 'XB2' launching holiday 2020 probably, You will likely have Halo Infinite as the big launch title which should hold the core XB fans over for quite a while, maybe even the first year with 2019 BC titles. Then you will probably have one or two GOW sized games drop throughout the year, year after year, mostly to hype Game Pass. They may not be quite GOW level quality, but worthy more intimate story driven titles that MS doesn't typically have on their platform. Let the third parties do most of the gap filling with multi player. There is enough time to make this happen and will be enough to put XB on solid ground and stop the remaining bleeds. They will have to really up their game beyond this as the gen goes on with some new blockbuster IP, if they want to reclaim any lost ground. It's definitely doable but won't be easy as PS isn't likely to let up much if any at all.

I hope that you mean Gears of War, Cuz the xbox has never had anything on the lvl of God Of War and a bunch of tiny indy devs wont be comming anywhere close anytime soon. And If even Ms own big experience studios cant get 1 big game a year, just around 2 small games that dont even review well. Cuphead has been the only one in likee the past 4 years and is no more than a tiny game that wont really move units, on what basis do you claim that they will make 2 GOW sized games year after year? Seing as what happened to platinum games I would say there is evidence to the contrary and the little quality thouse new studios had, will just drop, then somewhat mid next gen they might bring something average.

Maybe should have used GoW, or wrote it out, but ya, not God of War. That would be them really upping their game like I said they would need to as they get deeper into the gen. It's just an assumption based on the moves they are making. If all these new studios create are really small indy type games, they won't make much of a difference and MS might not as well have bothered. It's hard not to assume MS is actually putting effort behind this and going to try and make it worthwhile. With all the changes going on at XB this gen, I'm sure things didn't exactly run so smoothly at all of the existing studios, so with a more streamlined plan, like in hardware architecture, and less chaos next gen, they should be able to pump out more games. Some bigger, some average, some smaller. Maybe they will, maybe they won't, but the point was that it's possible if MS wants to make it happen. Do they is the question?

I don't understand.  What you said in point #1 doesn't seem to lead to your conclusion in point #2.  Could you explain how you see the Wii's technology placing it in 7th gen?

Thats because they are unrelated.

You asked a question, I answered it. You are now trying to use the questions you asked to make a connection. In my previous post I ave a list of thins that makes a platform be grouped into any given generation. Technology wasn't the only thing. It however is the one thin that doesn really go with the Wii which is obviously why you chose to focus on it and ignore the others. My exact words from my first response to you was:

"consoles are grouped into generations by a combination of factors like time/period of release, technologies that define the platform and software library......"

The wii has at least two of those things, Period of release and it also has some games from the 360/PS3 library. And while it didn't get UE3 support, it t the at that time current version of Unity support in 2008. So it actually ticks all three boxes. But for the wii, period of release was more important mostly because f how underpowered it was compared to the there two platforms at the time and how different (motion controls) their approach was.

Look, I know what you are trying to say..... but the best way to arrive at your own conclusions would be t ignore all the things that define generations and just go with chronological releases. But if that is how you define a new gen, and the Wii was 7th gen, WiiU 8th gen and NS 9th gen...... shouldn't  that make the PS4pro and XB1X 9th gen too and the PS5 and XB4 10th gen?

Wow......

The NS will not be able to play probably around 95% of the games released for the PS5 So how can they be competing with eachother?

You think the 130M people that bought a PS4/XB1 suddenly no loner want to play their COD, RDR, GTA, Madden, FIFA, Cyberpunk.....etc anymore?

The NS will continue to sell well for wht it is. It just happens to be that what it is is not something sony or MS needs to be worried about. It will not affect sales of the PS5 for the same reason it has not affected sales of the PS4. Those reasons will even be more obvious with the PS5.

Honestly I am beginning to think you don't know what you are talking about.

This

This is another reason why PS4 may hold on to 50%+ market share when all is said and done. Right now it has a 30 million buffer and will probably clear another 30 million at least if we are being realistic. So right now Xbox isn't pulling its weight and that will be how PS4 holds out
