Bold: Nah, man. Everybody does that. You mostly notice it regarding Nintendo because that's the company you favor.

Literally, the latest comment in the PS4 2015 vs NSW 2018 thread is guilty of this.

1. Switch only lost because it had a poorly paced releasing schedule
2. Switch only lost because it had more spots with nothing major
3. PS4 only won because it had great releases all the year
4. PS4 only won by a slim margin, Switch could win next year

It's always something isn't it?

None of those can be considered downplaying though because they say nothing negative about PS4.

On the other hand you have recent posts in that same thread saying that Switch sales arent impressive because it's a handheld+console which absolutely counts as downplaying.

1. It's not that different to say that PS4 only won because it had more releases, than to say that Wii only won because it got more popular with the wide mainstream audience. Both are downplaying. But whatever. That's not the point. The point is that every console maker has extreme "fans". Try enter a thread about one of the early PS4 remasters. Here, you'll see a lot of people hating on the "PortStation".

2. Go look again. I am the one questioning the user who said that Switch sales aren't impressive because it's a handheld+console. Please be careful to not wrongfully accuse other users of doing something like that.

1. Its all about how things are worded and intent. There is a difference between explaining why things happen and downplaying. Saying that Sony did a good job because they spread out big releases better through the year and that they retain the peak year is not downplaying and nobody has every used the phrase "wide mainstream appeal" when talking about Wii, they say "casual" which more times than not is used in a derogatory way on forums.

2. I never accused you of anything, I never even mentioned you. I pointed out that post to show what actual downplaying is. The example you gave was not downplaying, it was a rational post that can lead to healthy discussion while the example I gave was trolling/flamebait. Two completely different things.

But you're right, every fanbase has people going around downplaying the others. I remember those PortStation threads too.

1. Forget Wii then. People claiming that Switch only came out on top in 2018 in NA because it had Smash and Pokémon is very similar to people claiming that PS4 only came out on top in 2015 because it had great releases. But whatever.

2. Sorry. English is not my first language. I read "you" as if I had recent posts: "On the other hand you have recent posts in that same thread".

It's always something isn't it? "The Wii is only selling cos of soccer mums!" "The Switch is only selling cos people are buying it for others!" "The Wii is just a fad, it'll fall off a cliff in 2008!"

Some people really have a hard time accepting it when Nintendo succeeds.

Bold: Nah, man. Everybody does that. You mostly notice it regarding Nintendo because that's the company you favor.

How on earth is that post even remotely the same? You read it as downplay because you want to read it as such. It was praise to the great year that is PS4 in 2015. And please dont put words in my mouth I said neither of the 3 first points and the fourth was a question. I speculated since it was so close.

PS4 had a great year both in terms of releases and how they were paced through out the year in 2015 and somehow you think I am downplaying the PS4? Come on man..

Heck It's not even a safe bet Switch 2019 will beat PS4s 2015 next year since Smash is just that big of a deal in the US.

Kudos for the slandering job though. Next time just quote me instead.

1. Like I said, it's about wording and intent. The example you used didnt say "PS4 only won because it had more big releases", they said "the poorly paced released schedule for Switch did them in" and finished with "well done Sony".

The wording and intent of that post are clearly not meant as any form of downplaying and are basically saying Nintendo should have down what Sony did, provide bigger releases throughout the year. They are giving credit where credit is due.

2. No problem, I see how that could be a bit confusing.

Here's your post with those first 3 points. As said, I fail to see how that's different from someone saying that Switch came out on top in NA in 2018 because of Pokémon and Smash.

Mbolibombo said:

That was a close one. (1) In the end the poorly paced releasing schedule for the Switch that did them in. (2) PS4 had great releases all the year while (3) Switch had more spots with nothing major.

But sorry if I've mistaken your post.

I cant see anywhere where I said that PS4 only won because of this. So yeah, you are putting words in my mouth. It was a praise for Sonys yearly plan that put Nintendos dito to shame. It was a poorly executed year from Nintendo and I dont think anyone could dispute that. It surprises me that anyone thinks this is in any way downplaying Sonys 2015.

PS4 2015 > Switch 2018. In Sales, in software, plan
I dont think I cant be more clear than this. And hopefully you're accepting that I by no means was downplaying the success of Sony.

Thanks for quoting me this time though.

Bold: But that's the thing. I see just as many hateful comments from extreme Nintendo fans that I do from extreme PS fans (at least on this site). So I don't see this "different kind of negative reaction" or "particular anger" against Nintendo.

I don't see Nintendo being called the "kiddy/casual" console more often than I see PS4 being called the "COD/FIFA/bad taste" console. For instance, try enter a thread about PS software doing good in the UK. You can be sure to see posts claiming that PS users have bad taste/only play bad games.

I definitely see a lot of people on both sides too, and you're right that I would be more prone to notice those that are negative to my company of choice.

This has simply been my observation over the years, that anytime the established order of things is disrupted, a lot of people will always be uncomfortable with that and attack that which is seen as aberrant.

Everyone sees what they want to see. But I think what you should look at is the behavior and antagonism between the various fanbases in how they interact with each other. Do you see this animosity between Nintendo and Xbox fans? Or Xbox fans with PC Masterrace people? Or Nintendo fanbase riling against PC? Now do the same with the Sony fanbase. If we can look at that first I think we can then enter into a more meaningful discussion on why those thing are the way they are. I have my conclusions, wonder what yours are.

Sorry. I shouldn't have just carelessly picked the first post I stumbled upon without knowing the real intentions behind it.

More and more threads on VGC are derailed by the same few users (not you included) whose only goal seem to be to twist otherwise positive news because for some reason they'll be damned to let other gamers celebrate their favorite games and platforms. The latest example being how Switch's record breaking December was spun into being a disappointment. It happens all the time, in PS and Xbox related threads as well.

Initially, I visited VGC to get exciting and in-depth knowledge about my favorite hobby as a break from a busy everyday life. But since then many calm users have left and lately, the site has brought me more annoyance and "eye-rolling" than joy and relaxation. I guess, I need a break.

It's posts like this that makes me want to leave the site the most. I see you downplaying in PS related threads all the time so your post about PS users being the sole problem is just...

Screw it. I'm requesting a perma.
