Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch TFLOPS : 1,024 ? 0,79 ? 0,393 ?

THE MATH:

256 cuda cores x 768mhz x 2 = 393,216 = 393 Gflops

I think formula was like that.
There is nothing more to it.

Thats its Fp32 flop rate, when running docked at 768 mhz.

People "KNOW" with 100% certainty how many cores are inside the chip, and how fast they run.
You cannot just ignore facts.

People need to stop all this bullcrap about how the switch is more powerfull than that, because its all just lies.

Origianl Poster:   "Switch TFLOPS : 1,024 ? 0,79 ? 0,393 ?"

The correct answear is 0.393 Tflops (393 Gflops)

Stop suggesting its not, please.

That's just because you're not using the much more correct Russian math. Step your game up, man!

OK yes I was wrong it does render at 1080p, I was reading a different Digital foundry which said 720p not 1080p.
Though from looking at the digital foundry video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDTNNjWbYoo
they need to up the AF thats just painful on the eyes see the road at 1:42, AF is either not used or at most AFx2

@curl-6 yes sorry for some reason I was comparing ps4 memory with the switch

My friend who is an eternal pessimist about the Switch thinks that there is not that much compared to the WiiU.

Switch is around 3x stronger than Wii U, clear numbers shows that, it's more stronger even in handheld mode.

I swear that Nintendo fans don't care about power, guess not.

I am a Nintendo fan and I absolutely don't care about power. Just ignore my sig, it has nothing to do with anything.

@OP

It doesn't matter the TF as long the software delivers. Let your friend think what he wants as long as you can enjoy it.

Tbh as long as a peice of hardware gets software made for its capabilities and its great, the power of a device really isnt a issue.
It only matters if you have trouble attracting others to help do so, for your platform.

and even though the Switch isnt nearly as powerfull as the others, its selling well, there will be games for it.

The whole TFlop discussion is pointless, the Tegra X1 doesn't work as the same way AMD CPU/GPUs work on both PS4 and Xbox One. The Switch is way more powerful than what we could expect from a 2015 mobile chip but isn't powerful enough to reach what we could expect from home consoles this gen. It's a 900p console, it can do better (MK8) and worse (ARK) but can run current gen with good optimisations (Doom, Wolfenstein II, Warframe, Rocket League, South Park 2, Crash Bandicoot, DB FighterZ, NBA 2K)

Most laptops on the market can't play games as well as the Xbox One. The laptops that can cost significantly more than a Xbox One. For the record, the Xbox One X is pretty great.

Its not really fair to compare your laptop to a Switch because the Switch is significantly smaller.

Yeah, I know all that, bit still. Consoles used to be crazy fast machines for little money back in the days. And now they are kinda outdated the very day they are released. With just standard PC parts and little to no of that sweet sweet secret sauce. All that stuff was just way more exciting in the 90s and 2000s, if you know what I mean.

0.393 when measuring FP32
0.79 when measuring FP16.
If you are comparing to 1.3 TF of Xbox One, use FP32.

But still, every game must work on portable mode, so the number we have to use for switch is around 0.15

0.15 TF ?  That's why the best looking Game on PS3 or XBox 360 still look better than anything on Switch, right ?  Games like The Last of Us or Uncharted3 look more impressive than the best looking game on Switch from what I remember; I should see them side by side to be sure though.

All ports from the PS360 to Switch look and run significantly better on Switch.  You are trying way to hard.

I'm not really sure what your point is. I mean even if these current consoles aren't incredibly powerful they're still very capable, I'd argue they're aging better than last gen consoles.

I mean what if 8th gen consoles had double the CPU power, 16GB of RAM and a GPU with 3-4 TF at launch? Would gaming right now be much more enjoyable? I think it would be pretty much the same just with better performance and graphics. Compared to last gen developers got a huge spec boost for the 8th gen but the games are basically the same with better graphics in my opinion.

However, I do like the spec boost of the X1X simply because its making modern console games more visually appealing.

1) Why was a PS3 (seriously old system) brought into the thread?

2) Would you not prefer if consoles went back to their own hardware, you know, not off the shelf parts. At least this would mitigate the old tech argument we have.
