Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why games like Smash selling like they are helps the industry...

Which is why I am glad Fallout 76, Destiny 2, and Battlefront 2 got the negative attention that it did.  Those are all big name IPs, had a ton of advertising, but lacked quality.  Had Smash lacked the quality it has or had a lack of content, IP or advertising alone would not have saved it.  That is a good thing and why everyone should be happy about the success of games like Smash, God of War, and Breath of the Wild, regardless of your personal preferences.  Because it means that quality is still the most important factor in the end.

The problem is that it is a full retail 60 dollar game being treated like Fortnite, which is free to play.  Regardless of if it affects gameplay or not, progression should not be locked behind a paywall for a retail game...PERIOD.

What progression?

Unlock progression.  I get your point, it does not affect actual gameplay.  However regardless of that fact, increasing the grind to unlock in game items in a full retail game to push people to spending extra real world money to aquire said items is a shady business practice.

To many players unlocking things is a sense of progression.  In a game like BO4, it is the only progression you really have.  If something gets locked behind a paywall or your progression is slowed in a game you payed full retail price for, it hinders the enjoyment of the game itself.  If this were not the case, people would not be angry about it, but they are sooooo.....

You can play devil's advocate all you want on this, but it is never ok to lock content behind a paywall for a full retail game.  If you think it is, and I mean this with all due respect, perhaps you are part of the problem.  And I do not mean you as a person, but anyone who believes it is ok.  You give these publishers an inch, and they will take a mile.  That is why I will never be ok with micro transactions in a full retail game.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

Its simple, they increased the grind of that 200 tier so you can either grind an ungodly amount of time to hit 200 or pay real world money to pay for your progression.  It is a full retail game acting like a F2P game (Fortnite) using anti consumer practices.

"Do you even BO4?"

*looks down at my own trophy card in sig*

Pretty damn sure I did till they put this crap into effect and I, along with many others, stopped playing and put our money toward more deserving games.

Now lets look at games that have lost a ton of money...

Battlefront 2

Destiny 2

Street Fighter V

Battlefield V

Fallout 76

Do you have any evidence that these games lost money?  I've not heard that before.

We know that Fallout was a disaster, so it might be a safe assumption there.  Maybe we could say the same for Battlefront.  But, the other three, I've not heard anything more than slight rumblings about missed expectations.  That's a far cry from losing money.

Street Fighter V sold horribly.

Destiny 2 had good initial sales and died off very quickly, meaning they lost those who would have purchased their expansions.

Battlefield V...looking at the sales of the game, one would have to be pretty naive to think it recouped its production costs, let alone made a profit.

So you complain purely about a tier that is cosmetic  only unlike the actual account level which actually matters.. scratch that even the account lvl doesnt matter its all about the k/d ratio.

Pls gimme back the original cod with no modifications at all if that stops people from moaning

The games that “lost a lot of money” didnt lose money, they just gained less money than the publishers expected to.

Gaas can be done right. Forza Horizon 4 is a gaas, but with no microtransactions and an option to play completely offline. Assassins Creed Odyssey does well with that model too, with monthly updates adding more options and content.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

If the game was F2P like other games that follow that model, the tier system would not be a problem.  But it is a 60 dollar game so if you like paying for stuff twice, thats on you.  I am not going to support a game doing it wrong when so many others do it right.

Show me proof of where these games made a profit.  I'll wait.

At least my claims actually have sales data and reports to back them up.  Even if they did gain very little, what they made pales in comparison to the games doing things right.  Either way, my point still stands.
