As for the topic at hand, I too think movies look weird at high framerates. It is just because it's what I grew up used to, but I think there's a value in preserving an industry's format. That said, I wouldn't mind if say, 30fps became the standard. That's still "cinematic" enough without being as jarring.

24fps looks just fine to me at high resolutions. I have 17 movies on 4K Blu-ray that I play on a good TV, plus I see probably 15 movies a year in theaters on average, mostly on large format. 60fps might be fine and a good target for fast-paced video games, but high frame rates just look awful for movies & TV. The "soap opera effect" is a very real thing, and for film 24fps is optimum. It looks fine, and if you're one of the rare people that don't think it looks fine, then it really is you... or possibly your TV. There's a reason why 48fps never caught on. General audiences just didn't like it.

I get what everyone is saying, 60fps looks cheap, 48fps looks a little less so but now that it's pointed out to me I can't help but notice it. Still, 24fps is a problem. Perhaps 30 would be the best compromise or perhaps even variable frame rates for action scenes and cinematics, I think 30 could do well with action at any rate as long as the action isn't to hectic and avoid all this shake camera bullshit too when the frame rate clearly won't allow for it. I highly doubt we'll even see a 6fps increase though as that ads so much more cost and time to CGI.


The whole point of shaky cam is that you can't see what's going on and your brain fills in the blank. If you up the frame rate you will have to shake the camera even harder :p The problem with 24fps is no smooth panning. Variable frame rate can help with that or a solution that psvr uses. Double the frame rate for lateral camera movement. Modern digital cinema projectors should be able to do this, same way tvs can add smooth motion. The trick is to do it selectively. Only apply it to lateral movement of the background while leaving any other movement untouched. Or just deal with it :)

I recall a movie releasing some time ago, I think it was the The Hobbit, where they did a limited 4K 48fps showing. People said it made the CGI look awkward and fake, which it obviously is, but it took from the experience. I imagine the type of content matters.
