Doom on Switch is not 480p, at least not in docked mode, it's 720p-576p.

As to the topic question, can it be done? Yes. Will it be done? No, Crapcom seem allergic to treating Switch owners with anything but contempt.

Capcom support has been pretty good on Switch though.

You could argue Capcom is not putting their most technically demanding games on Switch but neither are most developers.

Its evident that porting technically demanding games to Switch and making them perform well is too much or much more work compared to porting games between PC, PS4 and X1. Software sales on Switch can also be risky if its not a family friendly type of game. Lastly, there is evidence that producing Switch carts is expensive when compared to BluRay discs.

Porting old games from 3DS/PS3/360 is not good support.

And that's not necessarily true, Doom evidently performed well enough for Doom Eternal to be brought over. RE7 could be done on Switch and would likely sell quite well; heck, RE4 cleared over 2 million sales on the Wii of all consoles.

I bought Doom on Switch and have never played it in portable mode.

Let's not beat around the bush, your post was misleading. Not only did you not specify "in portable mode" in the OP, but as the game has a dynamic resolution, calling it an anything-p game is inaccurate. You should at least amend your statement to "can drop to SD in portable mode".

You bought Doom only because you don't have any other current gen platform.

The lowest common denominator decides if a game is viable on a platform. Scalebound was cancelled because it wasn't possible on Xbox One, even though it may have been on Xbox One X. If a game cannot run on Switch portable mode, even if it could run if it was exclusively playable in docked, it still wouldn't be ported. Its why mentioning resolution of a game on portable mode is of direct concern.

Doom has dynamic resolution on every console, and yeah the game is generally 576p on Switch and can go much lower. The settings are also lowered a lot, as its below the lowest PC settings where other consoles have combination of medium and high settings. The alpha effects are rendered at just 360p and the game still struggles to maintain 30 fps. Still it does put into question if Devil May Cry can be ported to Switch. I feel its possible but hope they don't have to cut too much from the game.

None of changes what I said though. If you're going to list portable resolution, then you should make it clear you're talking about portable resolution. You should also mention that the resolution is dynamic. Otherwise it just comes off as cherrypicking incomplete information.

Relative to the capabilities of the Switch, PS3 and 360 ports are a great choice. The Switch can run that content with improved performance, resolution, textures, etc. As Switch fans like to point out this is also the first time those games have been on a portable console. I guess your idea of good support on Switch is X1/PS4 content with significantly reduced resolution, graphics and performance?

The 3DS games they chose are notable, I mean Monster Hunter is kinda big in Japan and offers significantly improved visuals. They will likely make a game for Switch in the future as well given its the successor to 3DS.

RE4 sold well on Wii in a period where Wii was really lacking games. If RE7 came to Switch around launch, it could have sold well. I also imagine Doom would have sold better closer to or at launch. I'd say Doom has underwhelming sales on Switch but I'm sure you'd just defend those modest numbers by saying Doom Eternal is coming, therefore its a great success.

Anyhoo, between several RE games, virtually every major Megaman game, Megaman 11, Onimusha, Okami, Street Fighter and other games I'd say their Switch support ain't bad. I get it, you want their technically demanding games on Switch running at 480p or whatever. Frankly, I prefer seeing Switch make last gen games look better versus making new games look bad.

PS3/360/3DS are old. Rehashing old games is lazy, boring, and not good support.

And yeah, if Doom had performed badly, Bethesda wouldn't have greenlit Eternal, it just wouldn't make any sense to.

If the sales of Doom is what most core developers could hope for, they aren't gonna work on Switch. I know you hate to hear that, but its true.

Meanwhile that lazy rehash Skyrim trounced Doom. If anything should have been greenlit it should have been Fallout 3, not Doom Eternal.

Edit: Diablo III, a lazy rehash, also crushed Doom. Lulz! Oh yeah, I guess you're right. Switch owners don't want 7th gen games.

Well, Skyrim is a much more popular game than Doom, it outsold it on PS4 and Xbox One as well.

At the end of the day though, they did greenlight Doom Eternal for Switch, and they wouldn't have if Doom 2016 hadn't been worth it.

I'm not arguing Doom wasn't worthwhile on Switch, I'm saying we both know "lazy rehashed" last gen games could easily do better on Switch.

You call that bad support, I say there is notable 7th gen content the Switch can handle better and people want more.

On a side note, RE4 was a "lazy rehash" on Wii but you used that as an example of success.

Wheeling out yesterday's games for a quick buck is a sign of a lazy developer, and yeah that goes for RE4 too, which I never said was good support. Good support means NEW games.

Maybe Nintendo is lazy for not making better hardware that could more easily handle technically demanding modern games? I'd argue old games coming to Switch is notable support when you consider they were not on a mobile device before and that's what Switch can handle without significant scaling back.

Capcom is making new games, the problem is Switch can't handle them without significant work.

The problem isn't horsepower, if it was Doom wouldn't be on Switch. It's Capcom simply not being bothered to make an effort.

It is a problem. Doom was already 60 fps 1080p on PS4 with medium to high settings. They already had to reduce it to 30 fps 576p on Switch with lower than the lowest possible PC settings. Now think of games which are already 30 fps on PS4. How badly would they have to downgrade to run them on a Switch? Is it worth it?

I can only see a port of RE 7 and DMC 5 as viable as they are 1080p 60 fps on PS4. Something like World, is probably not possible.

Capcom has already provided a good amount of games on Switch. They are releasing Dragon's Dogma as well. Looks like a good game!
