there is no force on the planet stronger than the release of a new main series pokemon game. even with everything else lined up for 2019, nothing is going stop it. its easily going to sell over 14 million lifetime with even a shot at 20 million

Mario Kart sold more than Pokemon on DS & 3DS.

DS

Mario Kart DS-23.60m

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl-17.67m

Pokemon Black/White-15.64m

3DS

Mario Kart 7-17.52m

Pokemon X/Y-16.34m

Pokemon Sun/Moon-16.13m

First Ultimate, then the Pokémon 2019 will surpass Ultimate

I have to imagine most Wii U owners either got a Switch or one day will, and there has to be some of the 8.42 million people that bought it on the Wii U like me that won't be double dipping on the game and buying it a second time. That would somewhat limit the sales compared to a new game like Smash where every Wii U owner that bought Smash there will more than likely buy the new game on the Switch. I say Smash should be close but may not reach the sales levels or Mario Kart, but I think the next Pokemon assuming it is done right will one day pass Mario Kart 8.

It's sad because I absolutely want a Mario Kart 9 on Switch and this "hurr durr duhm tiddly dumb there's nothing more you can do with Mario Kart, 8 is perfect I don't even want another one" is beyond dumb.

But eh, it probably wont happen. And hey, I don't mind if an F-Zero or Star Fox Racing game take up the spotlight as the new racing release from Nintendo.

I think Smash will pass it but after a while MK8 will take the crown back. Maybe if Pokemon 2019 is big enough and they dont drop another main one following year...

My prediction is that when its all said and done, MK8DX will be the bestselling Switch game till the end of the systems life.

The only franchise that has a chance to beat it is pokemon. However, subsequent yearly releases cut off the legs of the preceding title way too early for that to be likely.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Although I mostly agree with the "hurr durr" point, that's not really the reason we're not getting Mario Kart 9 on the Switch. Thread title is the reason.

Oh, I definitely agree. If we don't get a Mario Kart 9, it will be without a doubt due to sales. Honestly I didn't even think my comment could be interpreted as saying that Nintendo won't make a Mario Kart 9 because of said comments. I was just talking about the type of comments I've seen circulate the internet many times. Especially since to me it feels like these kind of comments were made as a response to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's insane sales and hardware selling power. Essentially people looked at the sales and started accepting that there'd most likely not be any Mario Kart 9, and then started making excuses for why that's perfectly fine. I love Mario Kart 8, it's one of the best games on the Switch and probably the best game on the Wii U, but if there's officially no Mario Kart 9 on Switch I won't be pulling out the "it's ok because MK8 is already perfect" card. Because even as good as that game is, there's SO MUCH to build upon! I'll just accept the fact that it's for logistical reasons, instead of trying to cope with it by reassuring myself of Mario Kart 8's quality. There's no excuses to be made, it's business and it's just logical.

Nintendo would be smart to make Mario Kart 9 for Switch, because that's part of giving Switch a long lifecycle. Now that Switch is Nintendo's only console, it's a lot more feasible to see more big titles release. There's no good reason to make no Mario Kart 9 for Switch.

This is something I've occasionally thought as well. I've been thinking about making a thread about which Switch exclusives will get sequels ... because a lot of franchises that were once per console, yet twice per generation now suddenly have a big ? mark as to whether they'll get a Switch sequel.

I think Splatoon 3 and Mario Kart 9 could very definitely be Switch games.

Why do people still think Mario Kart 9 will happen on the Switch *sigh*

It won't but i think this means the Starfox racing game or something else is really happening. I don't see them not releasing another racer eventually. 2019 would be perfect for it.

Star Fox seems like the perfect game for a racing spin-off, I wouldn't be upset if that's what we got.
