Forums - Sales Discussion - More consoles were sold in the UK in 2018 vs 2017. PS4 #1

Info at the link Gameindustrybiz#mce_temp_url#

  • PS4 #1 best selling console in UK in 2018 and up YOY from 2017
  • NS biggest mover up 20% YOY (though this should be expected being that it tracked fr at least 2 more months in 2018)
  • Physical sales down by ~3% YOY. Digital sales not tracked.

Some people will be surprised when they will see global sales numbers, imo.

I have the feeling PS4 is going to be undertracked this year worlwide (have this ever happened to a Playstation before???? ), because if in USA, JP and UK PS4 is similar to last year numbers, how PS4 is going to sell 2-3m less in the rest of the world?

EU and ROW tracking on here has always been soft. However I think a 17-18M for 2018 for the PS4 will be a fairly safe bet and will g in line with a 90M/91M sales announcement from sony.

By all indications it seems the NS is even now outperforming the XB1 in the EU. Which is a bigger deal when you consider that NS now has 2 of the three regions won (assuming the ended 2018 winning NA).

The PS4 is the only console that has not disappointed this generation, Sony has ensured from start to finish so a well-deserved success.
And RDR2 as boss, he deserves it.

2 of three??, and what about the rest of the world??, is a bigger marketshare than JP....

I can't find any reliable reference points for console sales in 2017. VGC's estimates for 2017 are contradicted by the article's statement that shy of 2.5m in 2018 constitutes growth over 2017; VGC has 2017 above 3.1m. Another problem is that game journalism is iffy, so it can't be ruled out that the article's comparison between 2017 and 2018 only concerns PS4, XB1 and Switch while the 3DS is ignored despite wording that should include it; nevermind that "official hardware numbers have yet to come in", so who knows how accurate the article is in regards to hardware sales to begin with.

In any case, there's too much guesswork involved to discern the sales of the PS4, XB1, Switch and 3DS in 2018.

Another unreliable source of information then...."surprising".

I don't think the article omitted 3DS sales being that it was mentioned when looking at software tracking.

And does VGC has numbers specifically for the UK or doesn't it just group it in to the EU? These numbers are for the UK only.

GIbiz has always been a fairly reliable source for UK sales "news". And there isnt much to suest that at the very least their winners order is wrong. Also they were very specific about the NS being up by 20% YOY and sales for the year bein over 2.5M consoles. That goes both ways, its either they know something we don't or they just pulled those numbers outta their ass.

So, if this news is correct and PS4 is up YOY in UK, I expect EU to be flat or YOY up too. So...., i will ask again, if PS4 is flat in US, JP and EU...., how PS4 is going to sell 2-3M less than in 2017??. Where in the world is selling way less than last year then?

As a reminder, PS4 sold 20'2M sold to consumers in 2017 according to Sony.
