2011 by faaaaaar. The amount of AAA games released that year was absolutely mind boggling. All platforms had something.
PC-Witcher 2, Star Wars MMO
PS3- Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, Little Big Planet 2, Resistance 3, Infamous 2
Xbox 360- Gears of War 3
Wii- Zelda Skyward Sword
3DS- Super Mario 3D Land

Not to mention the never-ending amount of third party games like Skyrim, Dark Souls, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Arkham City, Dead Space 2, Portal 2, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Crisis 2, L.A. Noire, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Saints Row 3, Rayman Origins, and Mortal Kombat 9.

I would definitely say 2017 comes close but in terms of pure AAA games 2011 hands down. 2011 was absolute madness

2015 was probably the best time. Whenever I think about the past few years I don't really see myself and the 550 hours I have spent on PUBG, or the 500 hours on R6. All I see in my mind is the days and nights I would spend playing Fallout 4 and Halo 5 in my old living room. Such amazing games despite their flaws. The titles released in 2015 are what really saved me from the addiction I had to MC and CS:GO.

This list is a little screwed to be honest, Fortnite shouldn't be on the 2018 list, its from 2017 (It's also a bad game, but that's just my opinion). And Forza Horizon 4 should be on the list as well, it won basically every Racing game of the year award. It seems like racing/sports games get their own special treatment when it comes to the highest award of the year.

For me, it points towards 2017 being the best year for gaming. That year saw the release of so many great games that it feels no year could compete with. It also showed how to properly start off a console launch.

How does one even break down and compare entire year's worth of great games? Impossible I say, so I'm just going to go with the year that is my favorite vintage of Pepsi Cola: 2009

In your case if we follow your 2009 Pepsi Cola theme , the year 1999 becomes the greatest year in gaming because it featured   the Pepsiman game .

To those naysayers who point out it's the wrong decade. I'm sure COKTOE would say It's not our fault  that in 2009 VGChartz was still a toddler who wet the bed , now we have to cope with a preteen .

2009 - Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 Demon's Souls and Left 4 Dead 2 was amazing!!

My choice 2017, it ended up being between 2009 , 2013 and 2017 looking back every year had a great 4 or 5 games , but dropped off to varying degrees I ended up with 2017  but 2009 with the games you mentioned plus Minecraft - Batman Arkham Asylum - New Super Mario Bros - Borderlands - Infamous - Dragon Age origins - Bayonetta  gave it a run for its money and In my opinion it came down to 09's depth versus 17  having three of my favourite games BOTW - Horizon - Persona 5 followed up with Divinity 2 - Mario Odyssey - Xenoblade Chronicles 2  being a little fresher in my mind.

If 2008 then I would probably pick that.

Still 2009 is a close 2nd. Wrath of The Lich King had been out and I developed into a raid leader of one of our 10 man groups and partial leader in our 25 man group. Our guild was peaking at around top 10 for Horde on our server which was a substantial achievement for our casual raiding group. I was doing well in pve and pvp, and other guilds even offered me positions, but I passed. Dungeon Finder unfortunately released in December, but it was only one month in 2009, and back then I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Console gaming despite being hardcore PC, with Uncharted 2, CoD, Dragon Age, Demon's Souls, and many more.

2014 and 2018 are next, with the others lagging behind.

2017, for me.

2009 or 2010

Personally, 2016 its filled with games I love. Uncharted 4, DOOM, Rhythm Heaven Megamix, Tokyo Mirage Sessions: #FE, Inside, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Twilight Princess HD, Pokémon Sun, The Last Guardian... I think is the year I enjoyed gaming the most recently.

2017 was a little disappointing to me. Sure, Breath of the Wild, Persona 5, Cuphead Mario X Rabbids and Samus Returns were amazing games to me for different reasons... but many games that I was supposed to love did not met my expectations at all. Super Mario Odyssey became pretty boring pretty fast due to its structure and a lame soundtrack even compared to 3D World. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 had a mixed story and characters compared to the original Xenoblade and its sidequest structure was too damn long, too text heavy for telling bullshit and annoying requirements at the very end of maybe 20 to 30 minutes sidequests.

2018... has been the worst year to me. I don't like Rockstar games, Nintendo got ultra lazy even with Pokémon and Smash, Octopath Traveller and its repetition can go fuck themselves... and I could keep going. God Bless God of War, Celeste and Torna the Golden Country...

Fucking hell time is running away from me. My first instinct was 2007, but that's more than a decade ago now.. None of them really stand out to me in particular, but I'll go with 2012 simply for Pokemon B2W2 and Fire Emblem Awakening.
