How does one even break down and compare entire year's worth of great games? Impossible I say, so I'm just going to go with the year that is my favorite vintage of Pepsi Cola: 2009

Chinese food for breakfast

I don't know.

2010 had Alan Wake,
2012 had The Walking Dead,
2013 had Super Mario 3D World.
2015 had Undertale.
2018 had Celeste.

My favorite games are from different years. I don't think I can choose one...

Damn ... The last 3 years have been great!. From a console release view also their place in my top 50 of all time;

2016: Firewatch (49), Alone With You (48), Oxenfree (47), INSIDE (11), Stardew Valley (2), Dishonoured 2 (12)

2017: What Remains of Edith Finch (46), Cosmic Star Heroine (43), Undertale (37), Dishonoured: Death of The Outsider (21), Pyre (10), Pillars of Eternity (4) and my GOTG Night In The Woods (1)

2018: Donut Country (42), Flipping Death (39), The Banner Saga Switch (20), Celeste (15), Hollow Knight (5), Divinity Original Sin II (3) & 3 games that will be in my top 50 2019 edition being Gris, Into The Breach and Dead Cells.

Im going to have to go with 2017.

"Wheel me out to the curb for garbage day"

Nice one. As we currently have the greatest 50 games thread, I just counted how many games from each year I had in the list. From the last 10 years 2012-1015 all had the same amount. So I go with 2015. It had Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Pillars of Eternity, Disgaea 5, Armello and Splatoon.

EDIT: Oh, and I see the current poll result shows no recency bias at all. Maybe the question should have been which year of the 90s or 00s was the best. In these cases recency would be out of the window.

Lots of good years here, but nothing beats 2017

Fortnite is a 2017 game. With that in mind, I think that the leading years would be 2017, 2013, and 2010.

But I'll go with 2017. It was the battle royale genre broke out in a big way leading to Fortnite becoming a cultural phenomenon the likes of which are rarely seen. The Switch's launch year was the best we've seen from any platform. Then you can add on Persona 5 as a cherry on top.

Yeah, I know what you did.  Game of the Year is sometimes wonky in its years.  Still, 2017 is the year it came out.  That's just a fact.

2014 or 2017
