Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Can the Switch live up to the "Ultimate Nintendo" First party-wise?

After the best Super Mario, Legend of Zelda and Kirby, which are my favorite IPs from them, is really going down in that direction.

Smash Bros. with the Spirits and World of Light being everything I wanted it to be and I absolutely love it, despite some roster problems, is excellent.

ARMS was a great new IP and a nice quirky titles with Sushi Striker.

Always enjoy Mario Party games, Super has a lot of charm. Mario + Rabbids was also excellent. Tennis Aces was pretty good with the adventure mode.

Let's Go was a charming experience as well and Splatoon 2 had a really great campaign in terms of level design.

Xenoblade 2 was good, but I have some issues that goes along with Monolith games in general.

The only low point for me was Fire Emblem Warriors, just on principle of overall disrespect for the franchise in terms of roster.

New IPs.
There's nothing major, either.
1-2-Switch and Arms have done well, but not to a point where you can forsee them having future iterations in the years to come.

Don't forget Labo, Snipperclips and Sushi Striker. I feel ARMS will get a sequel sooner than everyone thinks as well.

If you think support for this console will last only 2 or 3 years due to new systems releasing in 2020, you're in for a surprise. This will neither stop Nintendo releasing new games on it, nor it from keep selling well. By the point the new machines launch ($400~$500), Switch will most likely be around $200, half the price, so it won't be really competing with them. I also expect exclusive third parties to keep releasing on it, especially Japanese ones, as it has no competition there. Btw, Nintendo commented on how they want this cycle to last longer...

OT: I'm starting to agree with this logic. If all goes down well enough, it will end up being the best Nintendo console first party-wise.

Plus, with diminishing returns each generation, getting every AAA game will become less important as publisher prioritize cheaper projects to fill in the gaps, allowing the switch to get a lot of multiplatform support and exclusives, even if you can't play the latest Assassin's Creed.

I also have to say yes and no.

I think the best console still is the SNES. While the Switch might get a stellar first party line up, the SNES also had that. However, the difference here is that the SNES had an almost uninterrupted line of masterpiece after masterpiece JRPG title. That is what still is needed for me to put Switch up to that level. Time will tell.

Yeah, it's definitely possible. They already started excellently in just its 1st year with Mario, Zelda, Splatoon 2 and XC2 as well as a new title in ARMS. While its 2nd year was a lil slow (aside from Smash Bros), we will be seeing a new Fire Emblem, Pokemon and Animal Crossing next year, along with Demon X Machina and possibly Metroid Prime 4 coming. Things are looking great for the Switch, and I'm likely missing other titles, as well as whatever titles Nintendo has planned in the future.

Well you see, here is the problem. Every gen has its perks and people will have their own preferences. The only way the Switch would truly be the "ultimate generation 1st party wise" would be a robust and complete VC library with at least most of Nintendo's 1st party IPs.

Best Zelda
Tied for best 3D Mario
Best Smash Bros (going by what people say. Personally I dislike Smash)
Best Mario Tennis since GBA/Gamecube days
Best Mario Party since the Hudson Soft games
Best Mariokart
Lackluster Kirby
Lackluster Pokemon
On the whole, most of these franchises have either had one of their best games yet (Zelda, Mariokart, 3D Mario), and some have had their best entry in a long time, going towards the right direction (Mario Party, Tennis). Only Kirby has been somewhat disappointing. And I'm not worried about pokemon because the next one wont be a cash grab like the one we just had.

Cant speak to Xenoblade cause I dont play JRPGS.

Kirby isn't the only one that's patchy. While Mario Party and Mario Tennis are going in the "right" direction, the way in which they are listed above makes them sound a lot more impressive than they really are.

For example, Mario Tennis is actually a spin off which hasn't gotten a lot of games. It didn't get an original title on Wii, it only got a port, and on DS it didn't even get a game. So it skipped an entire generation. So when you say it's the best since Gamecube and GBA, whilst you're technically correct, that's saying it's only better than 2 games in a franchise with 6 games on Metacritic and 7 original games in the entire series (have no idea why Mario Tennis on Gameboy Color isn't on Metacritic).   Of course it's probably better than GBC, GBA, hell maybe even N64, but I seem to remember a lot of disappointment in the game when it actually released, and a lot of people still prefer N64 and GC (and of course how games are received at their respective times is important).

Also Mario Party was just milked so much that it's hard to make "going on the right track" sound impressive when you already have 7 legendary Party games (although people always argue over the ranking of the first 7 but generally those are the most liked), and one somewhat liked game. Like Mario Tennis it's just kind of been in the middle of the series in terms of reception and fan appreciation.

That being said I still expect that Switch will have one of the best Nintendo libraries, if not the best, by the end of it's life. I'm just trying to be more realistic with the offerings listed. It has simlar releases to Nintendo's front-loaded home consoles, but will most likely have the long term support of a Nintendo handheld. Mario Party and Kirby are known for having multiple games on a single console (although MP has been slowing down), so I have hope that they will make much better entries later on in the consoles life. Also maybe Tennis will get a sequel on the same console for the first time, I mean after all it used to be two games per generation.
