Have you already fought/unlocked Palutena? She's supposedly the last one you should get if you're playing Smash mode, so if you have, the others are probably in Challenger's Approach.

Hmm...I DID unlock Palutena. So maybe I am all done, Dave for the rematches I lost. But I thought that only amounted to three...

You're supposed to have 74 characters (including the 3 Miis) on the character select screen, and Pokémon Trainer is only one of them.

The thing about Pokémon Trainer "counting" as 3 characters is because there's 3 Pokémon you can play as (Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard), so they're essentially 3 different characters in one. They're listed as three characters on the game's website and I think on the in-game tips too, but on the character select they're only 1 out of the 74 you should have (meaning the game has 76 characters if you count them separately, which personally I don't).

(just going to point out, the game did tell you about this, you just failed to read it lol, that's not the games fault, except for being too fun for you to stop and read a screen of text tips! also keep in mind that smash has over 60 characters unlockable by playing the game for a few days, Street Fighter V takes months to unlock 5 characters from those season passes, or you need to pay around 30e per 5 characters)

Sorry, I tried to reply last night. But this site is so insecure that I’m constantly being redirected to a “Congratulations Amazon.com user!....” page. Was barely able to create the thread. 

Anyway, your response was the big winner. I had no freakin idea that section existed. When did they tell me that?? Haha:/

Followup question:  I did all my rematches and I AGAIN lost three of them. But the section for rematches is gone, and I again am not getting “new challenger” opportunities. Any idea how to unlock them now? I think I have 66 unlocked. 

awesome man, happy to help here, the one last character you'll have to make is the Mii Brawler, the Gunner and Swordfighter do just unlock like other characters but Brawler is available to create yourself so you wont just unlock it like the rest.... then the only thing left to do is to go into the options and change the language to Japanese to enjoy variants of some characters with extra voice lines... like Purin... or DEDEDE (no King) or Koopa and Koopa Jr!

Also... love that they have Dark Samus.... but Pit and .... whoa Pit.
