Yeah, just like Sony would like the vita to outsell the psp when it came out.

Just like the point I was making, yes I'm sure Sony hoped the Vita would outsell the PSP.

I get that. Just saying, if Switch doesn't sell as much in Japan as 3DS lifetime, that doesn't mean it's not a success. As Portis says, it's about profits, and Nintendo are making way more money off Switch selling $60 software for a $300 system than they were selling $40 software for a $170 system with 3DS.

Ultimately, I think whether Switch can topple 3DS lifetime in Japan depends on how long Nintendo support it. The 3DS has been dragged out for a crazy long time by keeping it around as a dirt cheap entry level system, if Nintendo does the same for Switch in 2023 and beyond, the sky's the limit.

How are Nintendo's profits this gen compared to others?

Yeah I knew it was up on the last gen. It will be interesting to see if they beat the gen before and become their most profitable gen ever.

Oh few personal notes on software:

Looks like Smash will be taking the physical retail crown this year beating out Monster Hunter with the final week next week. I honestly at the start of the year would have not guessed Smash would take this crown.  (Given at the start of the year, I thought a proper Pokemon game was coming out and Monster Hunter did amazingly).

Switch has amazing increases on software, someone already listed all the percentages. However the one to celebrate is Super Mario Party, that thing is proving to be a beast. Kind of reminds of Minecraft Vita, where it sort of feels unreal that the IP still has strength to do numbers like that. I know historically the franchise did really good, but I thought the damage would have been done, plus the casual audience would be gone.

Judge Eyes and God Eater actually pretty meh this week. I think Judge Eyes will need decent help from the west to prove to be a breakout hit, that it most likely deserves (I always want Yakuza team to do amazing, like they use to do with the PS3's Yakuza games). As for God Eater, wonder if this will change the franchise or even put an end to future mainline title (not spin offs).

Dragon Quest having 10,000 difference is surprising. I thought it would be bigger personally because of PS4 already having a number of properties and this franchise already established itself more on the PS4. However with that said, Dragon Quest itself is meh, not a bomb like some are saying, but meh. I was looking into picking up the first title for the PS4, but do not know if I have time, between Ace Combat 7, Super Robot Wars T, and my huge backlog.

I am amazed at the lack of strong titles in Week 51 for PS4. I really think Namco should have tried to put Ace Combat in December in Japan, and not near Kingdom Hearts. That is just me.

Hardware note: It is surprising that both switch and PS4 declined (just a small bit), but both did really good regardless.

That's a very tall order, the glory days of the Wii/DS were the most profitable era for a console manufacturer in the history of gaming.

I'm quite positive it is #1

Thanks, duly noted and edited.

Kinda odd with Switch popularity there that DQ builders 2 would be so much more on PS4. That really shows how Japanese gamers are using their systems. Perhaps PS4 for longer gaming sessions and Switch exclusively for shorter game sessions? Perhaps since DQ11 hasn't hit Switch yet, PS4 is the home of the DQ fanbase. Still odd. Also weak numbers for the physical Katamari.

110k vs 97k isn't really "so much more", its a rather small gap all things considered. But yeah, DQ11 being on PS4 but not (yet) Switch and the DQ fanbase subsequently being so far more established on PS4 is almost certainly a factor.

Judgement had an okay hold for a new IP/Spin off, but it seems strange that most of the sales of a Ryu Ga Gokuto Studio game might come from the west.

God Eater 3 should of been a multiplat with the Switch, looking how God Eater 2 performed compared to this just sad and I doubt the west will save this one.

Boy, what happened to Dragon Quest Builders 2, was the game a disappointment or something?
