Best (Pre Nintendo Switch) Handheld Game of All Time?

Forums - Gaming Discussion - Best (Pre Nintendo Switch) Handheld Game of All Time?

Now that the Nintendo Switch is here I guess all of its games can be considered console and handheld titles. The distinction used to be clearer however and there was a perception that purely handheld games were inferior to console games. That being said what handheld game do you think is the best of all time? Obviously Switch games don't count for the purpose of this thread.

I will say Pokemon Red/Blue.

GameBoy Advance for me. It had full BC with the original gameboy and was just a natural step forward overall. If you had an SP with a backlight, it was even better...in fact I would say the SP version would be the real winner here after reflecting on the struggles we all had with the OG version that did not have the backlight.

Game, not console.

Well this is embarrassing...

In that case, I will say Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks.  I am not claiming it was THE BEST handheld game, but it is certainly underappreciated.  I also think Golden Sun Lost Age is up there too.

However I have a feeling once I play Persona 4 Golden on my Vita, it will have the winning spot without question.  And after Persona 5, I WILL be playing that one soon enough.

thats tough just due to the amount of ground that covers. the gameboy, GBA, the DS and 3DS, and the PSP and Vita.

but if i had to definitively pick a 'best handheld game ever' it would have to be Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. this game just has everything. an amazing story, a good soundtrack, a treasure trove of post game content, and the only dungeon crawler mechanics that i have ever been able to get into.

I’ll go with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on 3DS followed by Metroid: Zero Mission on GBA.

Tough call, but I'll have to go with Pokemon Platinum on the DS.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Pokemon Mystery Dunegeon: Explorers of Sky. Took the already incredible Time/Darkness and made them even better. No contest imo

Mario Kart 7
Luigis Manson 2
Pokemon Red/Blue

There's only one to rule them all

Tetris
