Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The best Original Xbox Box Mini device would actually just be a Xbox One S (or X)

First of all, aesthetically if they just changed the shell of the Xbox One S to something that looked like the OG Xbox but stayed the same size as the Xbox One S, it would already be a mini compared to OG Xbox. I still have an OG Xbox, its a large device.

The Xbox One S at this moment already supports a chunk of the definitive Xbox titles whether its via Xbox BC or ports to 360 and X1. So MS is pretty close to being able to create a collection of OG Xbox games and sell it physically/digitally and bundle it with a tribute Xbox One S. Ideally it would be done like Rare Replay, some museum stuff and a game launcher. There are still a lot of games that need to be added to OG Xbox BC, but the OG Xbox didn't have nearly as many notable games as Xbox 360. As I've said before, they only need like 70 more OG Xbox games added to BC to get all the games people actually want. Some will never happen for licensing reasons.

Now the biggest flaws with this idea, using the Xbox One S as a OG Xbox mini, is the X1S isn't a simple plug and play device like Nintendo Mini devices. I mean the X1S requires downloads, updates, etc. But its also a technically superior device that doesn't have a single function of running the old games built in. I mean you could buy more OG Xbox games via the store, use actual discs... oh and it plays current gen games.

If people are willing to throw away $99 on a PS Mini which is crappy emulation. Why not ~$199 for a great device!

Great idea? Yes or Yes?

I agree with you underlying point - an OG Xbox skin on an XB1s, bundled with a collection of OG XB games, selling for $199 would be a great idea.

A rumer bout a slim Xbox One S is going around. The device your talking about could be priced at $149 next holidays. I don't think it will happen though. Companies like to over charge for these retro devices. For us consumers, that is the best option. Buy a current gen conso and have the option to buy the old games for $4.99 each.

People aren't willing to throw $99 away on a ps mini ;)
$149 for an XBox One S would be great!

you can get a pre owned X360 now for about 50e with a controller which allows backwards compatibility with about 450 of the OG xbox library... also has 100% compatibility with the X360 games library.

This isn't about the best way to play OG Xbox games. Also, MS doesn't produced 360s anymore.

360 is not a great way to play OG Xbox games. Quite frankly, the 360's BC is a crappy option because the emulation isn't great. The 360 tends to run BC games worse than native specs, while the X1 instead gives better performance with increased resolutions. I suspect the X1 is actually using the same emulator as 360, but the emulation team is fixing bugs and performance issues are improved with the brute force power of X1.

If you really wanted to explore the OG Xbox library, get a OG Xbox. They're still easy to find and pretty cheap online. If you wanna dabble in the some of the best OG Xbox with improved visuals and performance, hopefully more games will be added in 2019, a X1 is great. I generally avoided the 360's emulation because it was bad.

Anyhow, my main point was mini consoles are getting a lot of hype at the moment. If MS wanted to jump in that in some way, just use the X1 to make a tribute OG Xbox. People would also love a compilation of notable Xbox games in a single disc or digital purchase. It will be 20 years in 2021 I believe.

Mostly because it's quality is not acceptable, it's worse than AT Games efforts.
Price wasn't the issue.

The list of games is also hilariously bad.

You know you have dropped the ball when the NES Classic can emulate PS1 games better than the Playstation Classic.

Varies from game to game. The games I play run fine.

With that said... There are also some advantages to Xbox 360's backwards compatibility over the Xbox One... Like a larger selection of supported games for one... And unlike the OG Xbox, can upscale and have digital video output, faster load times and so on.

With the exception of a couple games, chances or I will play them on the Xbox 360 rather than original Xbox. - The Xbox One doesn't support enough titles (Like 2 out of my entire library so far?) to even make it worth my effort, but when it does support an OG game, they look crisp on my Xbox One X.

To Microsoft's credit, they have really refined their emulation efforts... They just need to increase their compatibility, they are severely lacking in titles.

I think cost is to much of an issue by using Xbox One internals.

I think if Microsoft pegs AMD to make a lower cost SoC without the expensive ESRAM, maybe shave off a couple CU's and takes the SLC NAND instead of spinning rust approach, ditch the optical disk drive, maybe cut off 4GB of Ram, they could get a console down to $150. - They could up-sell by making people buy an additional 3~ controllers, maybe have some online functionality to buy/download OG Xbox/Xbox 360 games.

The PS1 Mini just fails at almost everything. Amazing Sony let this happen. But like I said before, I can excuse the games selected but using slower PAL games and poor performance is what I cant accept.

I agree OG Xbox emualtion needs more games on X1. But I really feel only like ~100 games at best matter. And much if that is definitely feasible to acquire given what MS has been able to do with 360 games.

I'm not just talking about using the X1 internals, it would be a X1 with OG Xbox shell essentially. That way you get a device that does significantly more than play some OG Xbox games. It already emulates OG games really well, it improves them for HD televisions and now all we need if more games supported.

Unfortunately (at least for me), the draw of these "mini" consoles is the nostalgia factor. I don't really have nostalgia for the original Xbox despite it having some great games. With the original only garnering twenty something million in sales, I don't think it would be a huge success.

PS1 also doesn't have that much of a nostalgia factor. It was my first self bought console, yet I don't have great memories of the 3D games on it apart from MGS and Wipeout 2097. A PS2 mini would do a lot better. I still have one hooked up yet it's a hassle with them old inputs, wired controllers and top loading discs.
