Forums - Nintendo Discussion - So... The NES Service! Does anyone besides me ever play this?

I wanted add the "So..." before my thread because I saw several other people did it in THEIR threads, and they have lots of views and I want some of that "So," keyword power!

Anyway, I've been playing a lot more of this than anyone else here, maybe more than everyone else combined. I think I have done at least 20 minutes of each game, and a lot more of certain games. I'm going to kick this thread off with a story about one game that has really captured my heart.

If you've read a post about someone bashing the Metroid series in this forum, it's probably me. I want to make amends with you guys because of the NES and Metroid... I really LIKE this game! I think running around firing my ice beam and discovering an energy pack on the ceiling of a room I had run through about 30 times before was a really special moment.

If the game has one downside, it's that I find myself farming a lot... On the bright side, I've got much better at the platforming, dodging, and using the ice beam fairly dextrously to stop enemies and get around. The action and platforming in this game is fantastic, and I don't even care that it's repetitive at parts because when I get to a certain type of room I know how to blow right through it. Also, the game gets REALLY good once you get the Screw Attack and Varia Suit.

There are secrets in Metroid and some stuff you stumble upon... like the way to the area that became the Varia Suit... It's easy to figure out that you can get an enemy to go through a gap you shoot open and then bomb yourself up, then freeze... But I was not smart enough to make it all work after 30 minutes of trying, and so I went and found the High Jump and came back later and got it. I think the game is REALLY cool in that it allows skilled players to get through to stuff earlier. Once you have the Varia Suit and Screw Attack, you feel like GOD.

Another thing, the exploration in this is a lot of fun, you can definitely see where Hollow Knight gets its inspiration, it's MUCH more Metroid than Metroidvania. Playing Symphony of the Night recently, I'll say that Hollow Knight doesn't feel much like that at all; but Metroid, very much so!

I've defeated Kraid, and am now entering Ridley's Lair. Anyway, the game is a lot of fun. Some people may find it a little too hardcore, but I think it really lives up to the hype. The original Legend of Zelda is very cryptic, so much so that I am not even sure how I completed the game without help or a guide. Metroid has its secrets and hidden stuff, but it's not like "guess the pattern of directions you're supposed to go" and more like "Here's a suspicious dead end, shoot/bomb around for a few seconds to see if anything's here!"

PS. I still have YET to see a Metroid.

PSS. Don't spoil the ending! Samus is a badass character, and I can't wait to see how his story concludes!

Metroid is indeed a very fun game but I already replayed it when I bought it on the Wii's virtual console and I don't feel like going back to it just yet. So far, I've barely touched the NES games from the Nintendo Online Service apart from playing Super Mario Bros. 3 with my husband when the power went out this summer.

Signature goes here!

i have been enjoying the service but it feels like there some titles that Nintendo should be pushing to get out to the app sooner. We should be seeing Tetris, Star Tropics, Punch-Out, so many others besides what theyre giving us

Wow...kudos for you for going back to the original and really appreciating it. Many people just find it too frustrating. That game was so amazing to me as a kid. Zelda and Super Mario were pretty awesome as well, but Metroid just hit tone and terror so well for me unlike any game even since then. While I do think Super Metroid fixes some of the issues with the farming that you mentioned, there's no denying that an entire genre was created with this title and it deserves heaps of kudos. Good luck on the rest of your journey. You're in the god-like stage of Samus' journey and it really does make the whole game so much easier to play and enjoy at that point. There will be Metroids...

Story?

His Story?

It's been a long time since I've played NES Metroid, but it's still my favorite out of the Metroid games I've played. The other games just feel different for some reason. I like the feel of the original.

Also everything said in the OP makes me want to try Hollow Knight. If it's like original Metroid, then I'll probably really like it.

I play a few of the games occasionally, mainly the SMB games, TLoZ, and most recently Metroid. I don't have much nostalgia for NES games as I was born pretty much after the NES era ended and never grew up playing the system or it's games save for a few remakes on the SNES and some random GBA NES Classic Line releases.

The service is still missing quite a few of the 'actual' classics too. Stuff like "Soccer", "Ice Hockey", and "Tennis" shouldn't even be on this service, as they hold little to no value in the current day and only serve as filler to make the service look like it has a library.

Metroid 1 is my favorite Metroid game. So seeing someone else enjoying is a nice thing to see. Also, there are Metroids in the game. My advice is to have the ice beam when you beat Kraid and Ridley. You will regret it if you don't have the ice beam!

Anyway, the NES steaming service is the only reason to get the online service for me. I very rarely play online unless it is Splatoon 2 even when it was free. Right now I have some games to finish on the NES mini. So it will be awhile before I get the Nintendo Online thing. Also beating Zelda 1 walking through a forest without a map. Sure you can do it but you will get lost very fast and very often. When I first played the game I only used a guide when I had no idea what to do. It is a better way to play rather than being glued to a guide the entire time.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Do Not Click here or else I will call on the eye of shinning justice on you.

I physically own Metroid for the NES. I’ve played it countless of times. But it was at least 20 years since I last played it so when it came to NSO I gave it a spin, it’s now my most played NSO game but I haven’t finished it yet.

But man is Metroid a good game that holds up well.

Now I still remember roughly where to go but I love that the game has no mini map. If you want a map draw one with a pencil on a piece of paper.

Same here, mostly Mario Bros/SMB1/3, River City Ransom and Balloon Fight. Trying to play Zelda on the side without a guide (it's been over 20 years since I last played, so I do mostly from memory - and I didn't get past the 6th palace anyway back then) has been a blast, just too long for the little time I have these days.
