What the hell are you smoking, or do you have a time machine?

... back to the future ...

NES: Launch date: 1983

SNES:Launch date: 1990

N64: Launch date: 1996

Gamecube: Launch date: 2001

Wii: Launch date: 2006

Wii U: Launch date: 2012

Switch: Launch date: 2017

... Switch lifecycle could very possible be 5 to 6 years  the tegra X1 Released in 2015, so the processor will be 5 years old in 2020...

I think it's strange to say that a console with 2015 tech belongs into the same generation as a console with 2020 tech

I'm curious. What 'tech' did the Wii have that put it in the same generation as the Xbox 360 and the PS3?

I'm in the camp of generations are an outdated and obsolete concept now.

But if I were to choose one, its definitely generation 9, without a question.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

It depends on how long it takes for Sony and Microsoft to release a new generation or (however unlikely it is) drop out of video game consoles.

I think the approximate turning point is Autumn 2020. If that period passes and the PS4 and X1 haven't been succeeded yet, then the Switch is a late entry to the 8th generation. The same thing happened with the Atari 5200 and Sega Master System, both of which succeeded another console in the same generation.

If Sony and Microsoft HAVE released new consoles by that point, then we have something more akin to the TurboGrafx-16, 3DO, and Dreamcast, as a 9th gen console released early.

Love and tolerate.

Is it gen 8, 8.5 or 9? I will say it is all of the above and none of the above at the same time. For me, it is just doing its own thing.

It belongs to the same gen as the PS4 & XB1, as it will spend most of its life cycle competeing against them.
Also its able to play some of the same multiplat games, and most likely wont be strong enough to get ports from PS5/XB2.

This imo obviously means its belongs to the same gen as PS4 + XB1.

Gen 8 imo, technically 8.5. Wikipedia agrees that it's gen 8: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighth_generation_of_video_game_consoles

^ this.

Wiki says gen 8, and most gameing sites and reviewers also see it as belonging to the same generation as the PS4 / XB1.

Gen 9.

Most games will be from gen 8th, same as type of tech on the hood, plus power being lower than even the consoles launched earlier and WiiU being killed off and supplanted as gen 8 system.

It's gen 8. It doesn't follow the same process than other consoles which are replaced with new hardware when they're kind of obsolete.

The Switch was launched after an unexpected event from Nintendo, the huge fail of its current gen console. They decided what was the best for them, starting from zero to avoid any new flop and stop losses. When the Wii U's failure was confirmed, they announced a new console in march 2015, onlu 2.5 half year after the release of the Wii U, planned to be released during 2016 holidays. But internal dispute delayed the release of the Switch to march 2017.

It's unprecedented in the gaming industry to say "ok screw this, we'll start over from scratch". Similar thing happened with the Gamecube (I remember news about the "Nintendo Revolution" back in 2004 with the Gamecube only 2.5 years old) but back then, the new generation was already coming so there wasn't need to discuss in which generation belongs the Wii

I included it in my generation prediction thread for gen 8
