Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Nintendo Switch is generation...

What generation is the Nintendo Switch?

Generation 8 (PS4, XBoxOne) 71 44.94%

Generation 9 57 36.08%

Generation 1 (of the hybrid era) 14 8.86%

I don't care...I come to VGC for the chicks 16 10.13%

Total:158

Ok...so I'm sure this has been done before, but it seems this concept is derailing a few threads.

The Nintendo Switch succeeded the under-performing WiiU in 2017.  It is a hybrid system (the first of its kind), and has the power of something between a WiiU and a PS4, arguably much closer to the PS4 than the WiiU.

So where do we consider the Switch when it comes to generations?  Do we measure it against the PS4 and XBoxOne (Gen 8), or does it have a very early lead out the gate as the first Next Generation (Gen 9) system?

Or is it possible that it has to fit in its own category considering that it is a new way to play games, straddling the line between handheld and home console.  In that case, when will we see a proper competitor to the system?

There's plenty to debate here, and plenty more is already being debated in other threads.  I just wanted to create a poll, so we get an extra thread to boot.

It's Gen 9.

Wii U was 2012
PS4 and X1 were 2013.

That is Gen 8.

Switch is 2017 which is 5 years after the Wii U and 4 years after the PS4/X1.

And if the PS5/X2 launches in 2020 then it'll be 3 years after the Switch, if either gets an early start in 2019 then it'd be 2 years after.

Nintendo just got out even earlier this time in the new generation since the Wii U was such an abysmal failure.

Gen 8.5 along with the Xbox One X and the PS4 Pro

Switch succeeds both the 3DS and Wii U. A common error is that people forget that, hence why we have to have this same discussion so often.

This is true, so would you answer Gen 1 or just list it as a Gen 8 hybrid?

It is Gen 8 and Gen 9

Kind of like someone us who are stuck between generation X and Y

i.e born before digital tech and playing outside, but can use the tech easily as a millennial

So it's gen 8...

Switch shares 3 years with ps4/xbone

... Switch successor will release in 2022

...3 years ps4, only 2 years ps5 -> 8. Gen

What the hell are you smoking, or do you have a time machine?

It's in generation limbo. If it ends up sharing most of it's lifetime with Xbox 'whatever' and PS5 then I don't know how you could not class it in the same group. Same goes in the exact opposite scenario.

Generation "released in 2017, doesn't need an ancient arbitrary number like all other electronic consumer devices"

... back to the future ...

NES: Launch date: 1983

SNES:Launch date: 1990

N64: Launch date: 1996

Gamecube: Launch date: 2001

Wii: Launch date: 2006

Wii U: Launch date: 2012

Switch: Launch date: 2017

... Switch lifecycle could very possible be 5 to 6 years  the tegra X1 Released in 2015, so the processor will be 5 years old in 2020...

I think it's strange to say that a console with 2015 tech belongs into the same generation as a console with 2020 tech
