I think it is possible that this week Switch was over PS4... but if the positions are right then I don't see Switch having enough time to pass PS4 this year on an over 3M gap (or have adjustments reduced it?)

I have been saying this for a while (like over 2 months now), its practically impossible for the NS to pass the PS4 globally this year. It could pass it in NA but not globally. Because it would have to outsell the PS4 by around 3M in december alone to pass it. Just don't see how that could happen.

Everything is possible, like PS4 was over Switch by a bigger margin as well; but it doesn't matter, both are selling well and are profitable.

For the year 2018, Switch has zero chances on earth to pass PS4, it will never.  2019 ? it doesn't matter anymore, as Switch does not even belong to the same Generation of PS4 and X1,

it's a new console, and Sony/MS will be preparing for the Next Gen.

Switch now at about 9m sales for the fiscal year. Gonna need 9-10m more in 4 months for Nintendo's shipment goal. Still possible but cutting it uber close, Switch absolutely needs to sell 1m per week in December

No lol...It needs much more. Even with some strong 1,5M for december, plus my super optimiste projection of Q4, it would finish the fiscal year with ~19,5M.

If Smash doesn't produce a crazy and miraculous 2M next week for the worldwide sales report, I think the 20M will have lost every chances to happen.

Absolutely not a disappointing week for Switch, Nintendo always performs much better in December and this isnt just a regular December, it has Smash as well.

That's how I feel as well. Doesn't really seem disappointing to me. I guess the PS4 winning by about 50k is kind of a kick in the balls considering how old it is but it's to be expected by this point. Nintendo always does better in December.

I just haven't kept up with hardware predictions enough to know if this is considered a disappointment, but going by some of the comments in this thread it seems like it was to some people.

I don't get the notion of old. The lifecycle of a successful console usually sees rising sales until peak and then slow decrease which is starting to get faster over time. So new consoles sell less than older ones.PS4 is just over the peak, so pretty near at the maximum sales it gets.

Only failed consoles have their highest sales near launch.

Ps4 so close to 90m.

Each day bring PS4 closer to be the best selling home console ever behind PS2.

Isn't that true for each home console ever? As they seldom have negative sales? Although I admit, PS4 has a real shot to reach that goal.

I have been seeing it for similar time already, the gap had only been growing.

Well this is a site where we discuss how one are doing against another and there were plenty discussion on who would end the year ahead, fueled by Sony FY Shipment projection 16M and Nintendo 20M (I know it ends in March).

A lot of good consoles have picked on their second full year.

What do you mean picked on? Switch is selling better than in it's first year, this much is clear. So yeah, Switch picks up momentum. But you do not expect this was the peak year for Switch? 2019 will be bigger for sure and 2020 probably the peak year. Will people compare then in 2021 to PS5 and say: Switch in it's fifth year sells better than the new console with the launch push? It's just ridiculous. Older consoles near peak are expected to sell better than new ones.
