Maybe. I'm pretty sure they will continue to give support for VR on Playstation 5.

The virtual boy had nothing to do with virtual reality, It was nothing but a stereoscopic display and a rather bad one at that.

VR doesn't need saving, yet Sony is doing a lot to promote and support PSVR. The problems VR faces atm are price, convenience and comfort. Unfortunately the latter two drive up the price.



I don't know about "saving" as I believe VR will remain a relatively niche category for the near future but I see it as being something Sony will continue to support as a companion to their real money maker.

It's kind of like Sony's version of 2DS right now. Switch is Nintendo's golden child right now but 2DS still sells well enough and is profitable enough for Nintento to give it decent support.

That's where I see PSVR, nothing Sony does is going to push it into being a massive mainstream success but they will continue to give it enough exposure and support for it to sell a couple million per year and make them some money.

Wow, really? Only 4 million sold? That seems so inconceivable. There's no doubt in my mind that VR is the future. AR really but VR will be incorporated. Anyone who's played a significant amount of time in VR should know how much VR offers the gaming world. The possibilities are endless (I wanna jump in a Mega-Zord). I can't figure why the numbers are so askewd from the console.

Yeah.  I don't understand why people keep trying to make the comparison.

You're probably right.

I'm still a little pessimistic about VR, so I'm really amazed that there's so much commitment to it.  I really want to see where it goes.

Yeah, unfortunately.  

But I think people will be really amazed how quickly it'll progress over the next few years.  

PSVR has come down a lot in price. I bought the standalone launch unit at CAD 400 and recently bought the ZVR2 unit for CAD 250 including camera, Astrobot and Moss. It was a BF deal yet Sony must have been able to bring down production costs and recoup R&D on PSVR already. Actually what holds back PSVR right now is the base ps4 and especially the move controllers. PS5 will be able to do a lot more for VR.

The comfortability issues will be there for a while. I had no problem with it before, yet now I'm dealing with a bad back I rather just play on a screen so I can stand up, walk around, stretch at any moment without being tethered and not mess up my viewpoint.



Around the Network

Head-Mounted-Displays or HMRs are the future. They add so much to a game. In FPS games for example, where you look, and aim is bound to the same analog stick or mouse. Being able to see in 3D helps amazingly well with platforming, and aiming projectiles that are affected by physics. Depth perception is only there if 3D is there.



Perhaps "saved" in the same way Nintendo "saved" console gaming before, in that someone will do it eventually.  The only question is timing and who steps into that void.  Sony probably understands that.  With technology, sometimes being in position to take advantage of technological breakthroughs is of utmost importance.  That's what they're doing now by establishing VR as a part of the Playstation brand.

More than anything, I'm surprised that it's not Microsoft.  At least, not yet.  They have the money to force their way into any market at any time (though they don't always succeed).  The Xbox track record on that front hasn't been spectacular, however, so maybe they're being a bit more careful.  Of course, I wouldn't be shocked to see the next Xbox launching with their own Windows VR solution.

Speaking of Xbox, I hope Sony remembers the Xbox One launch and remembers that consumers who have a choice don't much care for being forced into new things, especially expensive new things.  No matter how much they push it, they need to keep it optional.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see them drop it out of the blue.  Sony has definitely earned their reputation for not fully supporting their own products.

Microsoft has a big track record when it comes to jumping in too late. Zune, Windows phone, MS surface, always behind the trend. Even the original XBox was rather late and ran a 4 billion loss. However MS did stick with it. Not so with Kinect though, and the promise to bring windows VR headsets to XBox One X have been empty so far. Well, wasn't so much a promise more of a, we'll talk about that next year and then never did.

We'll see. Sony dropped 3D tv, ps eye and the move then repurposed all for PSVR. Perhaps that was always the long term plan.GT5 already had head tracking.



Honestly? yes.
It has the best selection of VR games from any device on the VR market from what I understand.



I think Sony is a big reason why that side of the industry has maintained any viability and allowed it to grow and mature. We will have a much better mainstream VR generation when that time comes because of it.
