Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How Crash Team Racing beat Mario Kart at its own game

If we're talking MK64, an argument for which is better can be made, but Mario Kart in general? I'm not so sure about that. The series has changed since then. Heck Double Dash and later games are almost different beasts altogether. I don't mean to say the game feels dated, but this kinda feels like if MK64 was being compared to MK8.

Commercially or critically? or some random stranger opinion?

Because Crash is much more non-casual compared to Mario Kart. It offers more challenge and feels more rewarding. Its sliding also feels perfect.

To be fair the sliding mechanic in the Mario Kart series changes with each new iteration.

Exactly! No two Mario kart games are a like. With each new iteration in the series the gameplay always comes with new changes. People that say CTR is better than Mario Kart are clearly have not played every entry in the MK series, is going strictly off of MK/MK64 vs CTR, or they are clearly biased.

CTRs biggest problem is that Mario Kart came before it.

Personally (and my memory is foggy because it has been a long time since I played it) nothing really stood out with CTR compared to mario kart. It was not bad, it was just the playstation households option for a cart game.

(i never owned it just played it while over at friends)

I never played it, but knew of it back when it came out. I figured it was just an attempt to copy Nintendo and such attempts often fail. I never liked Diddy Kong Racing either, thought Mario Kart 64 was way better and way more fun, so people saying CTR was a clone of DKR, is not a good thing.

Indeed, Naughty Dog is easily the most diverse developer out their. They’ve created critically acclaimed blockbusters in so many different genres it boggles the mind that they’re all from one developer.

Not even close:

-PS1: Crash Bandicoot and Crash Bandicoot Racing

-PS2: Jak and Daxter, Jak X: Combat Racing

-PS3: Uncharted and Last of Us

-PS4: Uncharted and Last of US

Now try to compare that with Rare just on N64 platform:

-Killer Instinct Gold

-Blast Corps

-GoldenEye 007

-Banjo-Kazooie

-Diddy Kong Racing

-Jet Force Gemini

-Donkey Kong 64

-Conker's Bad Fur Day

-Perfect Dark

-Mickey's Speedway

Rare just on N64 have more diverse games than Naughty Dog last 4 generations combined.

But what I find very impressive about Naughty Dog is they went from Crash Bandicoot to Last of US.

Well Crash come after Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing.

It took the best elements of both at the time and combined them.

Yep.

It's a copy but it's a damn good copy. So many others tried to rip off Mario Kart but came up short on one way or another. CTR took it to another level.

I may just fire up my Vita today and take it for a spin.

Let me clear the table by saying that kart racing games are for little children. No joke.
