Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Help me identify which Switch games to buy

So, it turns out that for all my hesitation (I had promised myself to buy a Switch only when MP4 comes out, as a Wii U disappointee) I had a moment of madness or something and when I saw an offer for Switch plus Mario Kart and Smash Bros, for the same price as a Switch goes on its own (UK, Curry's) I just jumped the gun.

Now, I'm waiting for the new family member to arrive, my first new Nintendo console since purchasing 3DS and Wii U, both on their respective launch day. To say I'm excited is to understate things!

I know that, as a PS4 Pro owner, I'm unlikely to play most third party software that appeared on both systems. I also don't want games that look or play better on PS4 Pro. But I do want to focus on games that make sense on the go, third party, indies or otherwise. I also do not really want most Wii U ports, as I already have these games. I have identified Diablo 3 for Switch, and of course I'll be getting Mario Odyssey (possibly by replacing Mario Kart which I won't be needing as I have it on Wii U).

What else should I consider? I'm happy to hear indie game recommendations as well. I do not have a gaming PC (or any way to game on PC), so Steam gems are good with me as well!

Thanks for the recommendations in advance!

Depends on what genre

Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are amazing single player games, with Odyssey having a Player 2 option

If you're an RPG fan, Xenoblade 2 is a great pick

Splatoon 2 is a weird one.. a lot of people, myself included, really like it, but not all shooter fans do.

Overcooked 2 is a great party game, if you don't own it on other systems

What are the kind of games and genres you like? Without knowing those, it's kinda hard to give good recommendations.

Since you wanted to play MP4, I'd suggest some Metroidvanias like Axiom Verge or games like Celeste.

The Binding of Isaac could also be very interesting for you

Wait, your Switch came with Smash Bros AND Mario Kart?

And you're getting Mario Odyssey?????!?!?!

Congratulations, you have every essential Switch game already. It can only go down hill from here ...

Buy Celeste, Bayonetta, and Kamiko. There's more games I could recommend but I'll leave it a short list for now...

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Its expansion Torna
Zelda BOTW
Mario odyssey
Octopath traveler
Mario and rabbids kingdom battle

Those 6 titles are the Best ones in my opinion, other great ports are valkyria chronicles 4, dark souls remastered and monster hunter generations ultimate, consider them if you havent played them. I didnt like diablo 3, i felt it very repetitive.

It's more ideal on a TV because the world is vast, but Breath of the Wild I think is definitely worth picking up. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as well, since it looks so great on the big screen. It's a great game regardless.

If you have friends to play some MP, Kirby Star Allies and Overcooked are games worth picking up.

If you like JRPGs, there's also Octopath Traveler, which is great for on the go.

Also, a great on the go game is the Binding of Issac. It's a nice quick game to play while you're waiting on a bus or just chilling around.

I really enjoyed The Messenger, maybe have a look at it.

While we're at it, just check the link in my sig, maybe those will help (Will have to get to update it someday, but probably won't get around to do so before next year)

Well, the obvious recommendation is Zelda BOTW, this game is great.

After that it depends strongly on your preferences.

turn-based RPGs: Octopath Traveler, Child of Light
action RPGs: Xenoblade 2 and Torna
strategy: Civilization VI and Mario+Rabbids
???: Katamari Damacy Reroll

Whatever you decide, bot Octopath Traveler and Katamari have demos, you should try at least these demos.
