Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on why Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't on Switch

Maybe..but what better answer is there?  "too demanding for our hardware" would have trolls dancing in the streets.  At least this way, Reggie has us arguing over whether it is possible and whether Rockstar would even want to try.

He could blame Rockstar (probably a bad idea) or he could promise it will be there later (okay, but now what?) or he could take it down a peg (we'll leave boring cowboy simulators for the other consoles).  I like the last option best but it might be just as bad as insulting Rockstar directly, for company relations.

I am open to other answers that would make Nintendo Switch look good without hurting Rockstar.

Edit: forget boring, how about, "CASUAL cowboy simulator"?

He could have said that even though he thinks the game is great, R* had priorities that didn't include porting the game to Switch.

That makes it sound like the Switch isn't worth Rockstar's time and effort, not a good choice of words in terms of PR.

Is that your way to avoid saying clearly that even if RDR2 started development after Switch was know it wouldn't be made for it anyway? GTA V runs on X360 and PS3 and still got no port for Switch.

Yes, slaughter all the game and it will run... in other news they could make a RDR2 version for PS1/N64 since both can handle 3D.

ANY game can be ported to almost any console. The point is what will be the end result and how much work will it take? Should the result be called the same name as the original source material?

And are you under the agreement that if Switch was already know by the time of early development of RDR2 it would have been launched on it?

Not necessarily would (especially coming from the Wii U flop would certainly made them wary, besides no PC port means not being ported everywhere anyway), but chances are it could. Like I explained there's no technical reason for it not to run on Switch. If ARK: Survival Evolved can run on Switch, then RDR2 certainly could, too.

@bolded: Not with their Shader technology (among other things). Those Shaders also kill of any potential PS360 (but not necessarily a Wii U version) - you would need to rewrite half the code to port the game to them.

As already said you can port whatever current game to WiiU or Switch if you so much want, and ARK is pretty much the evidence that it can suck balls pretty hard and shouldn't be done.

Which is much more true than implying the reason for RDR2 to not be on Switch is it being under development before Switch got announced, a thing that didn't prevent any game to come to PS4, X1, PS3, X360 I could go on.

Looks like Reggie ignored the big elephant in the room (hardware). "Are you joking?" would have been more fitting answer. But PR talk is PR talk, and Reggie knows his job.

Bullshit, Switch can easily handle any 8th gen.

Just look Ark on Switch in glorious 170p or whatever.

The Switch console hardware itself if more than capable of handling RDR2, but it might be a costly port. The bigger issue is actually cart size. RDR2 is a very big game, and I don't think Rockstar would want to pay for a cart big enough to carry it.

Well its true, if Switch can handle Ark (unoptimized mess from game) that even on PS4 runs at 640p, it could handle any 8th gen game.

What he said was the correct response. Had developers known about the Switch then they could have considered some accommodation. I'm not saying the port would have been the best, possible, or even the same game in the end but they would have had more to consider. Once the decisions are made and a game is well into development then it is hard to double back for something that wasn't even in their consideration. In that, the Switch hardware does come into play. It would require very unexpected consideration. Had the Switch been more powerful then it wouldn't have even needed consideration. Like I said, his response was appropriate.

It feels more like you are simply looking for people to band together with you in saying the Switch is heavily underpowered. For what all the Switch is doing, it really isn't.

The Ps4 and X1 versions are running poor resolutions but thats with a massive improvment in graphics settings.

The Switch version has abysmal resolution and graphics settings so poor they arguably should disable them entirely. For example, cant they just turn off the shadows entirely?

However, I do see this Switch port as an interesting experiment. Its a very taxing (poorly optimized) 8th gen that appears to be fully functional on Switch. That suggests virtually any 8th gen works on Switch. Also a better optimized games work even better on Switch, as we see with Doom and Wolf 2.

A game like RDR2 though... the graphics would need to be scaled far back to just maintain 480p.

Sorry, if having Switch in consideration would make the game lesser to accommodate for it them I'm happy they didn't took it into account.

This game is unoptimized mess in any case, game runs 640p on base PS4 while on same console we have RDR2 running at 1080p with much better frame rate.
