Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on why Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't on Switch

I mean... technically he's not wrong even though it just sounds like a standard PR response lmao. The real question is does anyone here actually think Rockstar would have even tried to bother with a port even if they had known about the Switch at the start of developing RDR2. I'm gonna guess not lol but who knows.

With that said though, I think 2019 will be a really telling year for the Switch in terms of what it can actually handle because we know that a lot of third parties took the wait and see approach with the Switch as they were unsure of it would be successful after the Wii U, so thus far it feels like we still haven't gotten many chances to see how the Switch can handle current gen AAA games outside of some like Doom, Fortnite, Wolfenstein 2, etc all of which continue to be updated with better performance and quality as well. (Though there were some some bad ports as well like ARK, but that also runs bad on everything lol).

But now for 2019 third party support seems to be ramping up and Switch already has more current gen games on the way like Mortal Kombat 11, Doom Eternal, Trials Rising, Crash Team Racing, etc. It will be interesting to see how those shape up.

Reggie is a PR machine pretending to be human but what he said isn't wrong. That doesn't mean RDR2 would have made a Switch appearance if the hardware had been out when RDR2 was in the planning stages, of course, but it does preclude that possibility by making it much more unlikely to begin with. In a general sense, there isn't anything wrong with his statement and it might very well have a real bearing on future content.

That being said, it looks like some of our members are taking up the PR challenge and going much further into bullshit land than Reggie did. It's kind of interesting to see a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 getting downplayed.

Screw Red Dead Redemption 2, we've got Breath of The Wild and Mario Odyssey. And now Smash.

I agree with this to an extent. Red Dead would be amazing in VR, but in current form (TV/Gamepad), the games you listed are much better. Having RDR2 would be big for the system though, even if if to me, it would be much more boring than the many other options.

I wonder what he will say next year, and beyond, as COD, Assasins Creed, Battlefield, and other AAA 3rd party titles don't come to the system natively. Once 3rd party games go to PS5/XB4 as the baseline, that will pretty much close the door on Switch.

I think the saving grace for Switch is that usually for the first 1-2 years of a new generation a lot of games are still cross-gen. So assuming the PS5/XB4 come out in 2020 for example and that the games are still cross-gen with PS4/XB1 until 2021 or 2022 I can still see Switch ports being on the table. Like you said though, once that ends I can't see many other Switch ports lol but by that time the Switch will also be at the 5 year mark so maybe we would have a stronger revision between now and then if they decide to go that route.

"Looks like Reggie ignored the big elephant in the room (hardware). "Are you joking?" would have been more fitting answer. But PR talk is PR talk, and Reggie knows his job."

You program a demanding game well enough, you can make it fit on weaker hardware: see Doom 2016. RDR2 most likely began development with X1/PS4 in mind so Reggie isn't ignoring any elephant.

Comparing Doom 2016 to RDR2 is not very relevant, since RDR2 is much more demanding game (also 60 fps vs 30 fps). Doom's engine is also one of the most well optimized engines.

So make RDR2 less demanding then.

Please make RDR2 work on SNES classic then.

There's no economic incentive to do so.

That's a textbook PR answer right there.

Wrong. There's no technical ability to make it work. OK, how about making it work on the Atari? What about the gameboy color?

In other news, Star citizen won't be on smart TV's anytime soon.

Offtopic but is that game ever coming out? I thought it was just a scam at this point.

Rockstar's current approach seems to be working well enough.

Besides, how would have conversation have played out?

"Hey, I was thinking, 'what if Nintendo's next console is a hybrid with lower specs than the current consoles and is way more popular than the Wii U?'  Maybe we should downgrade on the PS4 and Xbox One just in case that happens?"

"That's a great idea, man.  Okay, people, we're starting over!  We're going to scale everything down even though we have no idea of the specifications on this hypothetical console!  Let's get to work!"

And if a game show on PS5/X2 but not on Switch how will they use the excuse that when the game was in initial stages of development they did now about PS5/X2 but not Switch?

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

So what did people expect him to say lol?

Rockstar haven't made a meaninful game on a Nintedo system since Carnival games which saved them to be able to have full funding for GTAIV development. They did however release a meaningless trial in LA Noir were you have to download 95% of the game setting unrealistic expectations on gamers to buy an incomplete game cart.

or

Our hardware can't handle it

Two negative statements which don't do Nintendo any favours.
