Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on why Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't on Switch

He should just be honest and say games that are 100GB+ in size are too big for the Switch.
Also the hardware probably isnt strong enough to run it.

Screw Red Dead Redemption 2, we've got Breath of The Wild and Mario Odyssey. And now Smash.

You're missing out.

Yes, because no other game that launched around this time have gone to Switch... Reggie spin is silly. Everyone knows why it isn't on Switch.

The only reason is that the Switch is not powerful enough. Imagine how the games in a few years will look with the PS5/Xbox2 release in 1-2 years. There is no way that big third-party games will be ported to the Switch when the 9th generation begins because the performance gap will be too big for the Switch.

I'm pretty sure a lot of games launched during the first 2 years of PS4 and X1 weren't made with they as main platforms as well, that didn't prevent them from releasing.

Rockstar has little interest in Nintendo platforms. What was the last rockstar AAA game to release on a Nintendo console?

And technically they only published that game rather than developing it. If we're talking ports of games they actually developed in-house, you have to go all the way back to the original Wii era, with Bully and Rockstar Table Tennis.

Getting back to the topic at hand, RDR2 struggles to run acceptably well on the original Xbox One, so it's no surprise that the Switch can't handle it.

Someone should have pressed him about GTAV.

Indeed, but I wished to stress out Rockstar isn't hating the Switch like all Nintendo consoles (I don't believe the "Nintendo almost ruined Rockstar North back in 2000 so that's why they hate Nintendo" theory).

And I don't blame Reggie to say PR stuff, I blame journalists who ask questions like this or "tell us why your 1st party title aren't on other platforms". I mean, really ? Do you really need to ask why a huge game like RDR2 which isn't even running good on the Xbox One S isn't on the Switch ? Why not ask instead if he knows something about GTA V coming anytime soon ? Which would make more sense, or a port of the original RDR.

I agree with this to an extent. Red Dead would be amazing in VR, but in current form (TV/Gamepad), the games you listed are much better. Having RDR2 would be big for the system though, even if if to me, it would be much more boring than the many other options.

I wonder what he will say next year, and beyond, as COD, Assasins Creed, Battlefield, and other AAA 3rd party titles don't come to the system natively. Once 3rd party games go to PS5/XB4 as the baseline, that will pretty much close the door on Switch.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. “For third-party, big or small, we want all that best content to come.”

That being said, when a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 comes out, is that something you’re interested in having on the Switch?”

“Absolutely. We’d love for it to be there. But again — and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process — Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch. What happens moving forward? We’ll see. But that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform.”

Looks like Reggie ignored the big elephant in the room (hardware). "Are you joking?" would have been more fitting answer. But PR talk is PR talk, and Reggie knows his job.

You program a demanding game well enough, you can make it fit on weaker hardware: see Doom 2016. RDR2 most likely began development with X1/PS4 in mind so Reggie isn't ignoring any elephant.

Please make RDR2 work on SNES classic then.
