Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on why Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't on Switch

Reggie is right and wrong here. In the case of Red Dead Redemption 2, this is certainly one of the games that wouldn't have been made for the Switch in any case. Rockstar clearly wanted to push the boundaries of the other consoles so they wouldn't have considered a Switch version even if the Switch had been revealed a year earlier.

But in many other cases, his explanation is correct. The Switch is not going to get those huge western AAA titles. But it doesn't need to, so that's not a problem for Nintendo. 2019 already has a few decent third party (even exclusives) revealed. And that's all Nintendo needs to fill the gaps in their line-up.

In other news, Star citizen won't be on smart TV's anytime soon.

Offtopic but is that game ever coming out? I thought it was just a scam at this point.

(Almost) confirmed vaporware.

I remember reading years ago it accumulated 10mill or something in funding? Crazy to think all those people funded so much for a bunch of empty promises.

Looks like Reggie ignored the big elephant in the room (hardware). "Are you joking?" would have been more fitting answer. But PR talk is PR talk, and Reggie knows his job.

Bullshit, Switch can easily handle any 8th gen.

Just look Ark on Switch in glorious 170p or whatever.

Lol exactly.

Look at the state of ark, I'd hate to see what rdr2 would be like. Switch just isn't powerful enough.

I don't think Ark running on Switch is proof enough that any game could "run" on Switch.

Run could have many meanings. If by run we just mean "be playable", so perhaps yes, but most PS4 would be playable like rubbish on Switch.

Playable is not enough.

God bless You.

My Total Sales prediction for PS4 by the end of 2021: 110m+

When PS4 will hit 100m consoles sold: Before Christmas 2019

With the right art style, it could look beautiful. R* tends to prefer more realistic depictions however...

The Ps4 and X1 versions are running poor resolutions but thats with a massive improvment in graphics settings.

The Switch version has abysmal resolution and graphics settings so poor they arguably should disable them entirely. For example, cant they just turn off the shadows entirely?

However, I do see this Switch port as an interesting experiment. Its a very taxing (poorly optimized) 8th gen that appears to be fully functional on Switch. That suggests virtually any 8th gen works on Switch. Also a better optimized games work even better on Switch, as we see with Doom and Wolf 2.

A game like RDR2 though... the graphics would need to be scaled far back to just maintain 480p.

This game is unoptimized mess in any case, game runs 640p on base PS4 while on same console we have RDR2 running at 1080p with much better frame rate.

Agreed, that's why I said 480p and not 170p.

But don't just look at the PS4, the Switch is even far below the X1 in GPU.

Even if talk about XB1, RDR2 runs at 860p on XB1 while ARK runs at 610p with much worse frame rate, or talking about Xbox One X full 4K resolution for RDR2 vs 1440p for ARK.

Switch can't handle this beast.
