Forums - Sales Discussion - Japan Sales Week 49 Media Create/Famitsu/Dengeki - December 3-9, 2018

Wow! 1.2m for Smash is a lot! I had no idea Smash was going to be that popular in Japan. Not too many games can sell 1.2m in one week in Japan. This may put Smash into a whole new category.

Only Monster Hunter World had a bigger week one for retail sales this year. Smash did incredibly well.

VGC says Monster Hunter World did 1.36m in Japan it's first week.  Any game that can sell anything remotely close to Monster Hunter in Japan is doing extremely well.  Monster Hunter is a top tier franchise in Japan.

Doesn't seem very good, but how well did Famicom/Super Famicom Mini do?

Famitsu just published a preliminary sales report (something they only do for major hardware launches), and revealed that the plug-n-play console sold over 260 000 units during its launch week in Japan (262 961 units to be precise). (This was sold out completely) Famitsu just published a preliminary sales report (something they only do for major hardware launches), and revealed that the plug-n-play console sold over 368 000 units during its launch week in Japan (368 913 units to be precise).
Regarding the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Famicom, Media Create report that it sold about 340 000 units during its opening week (slightly less than what Famitsu reported, earlier this week).

Famicom was 250k, SNES was 350k

It's 12 million USD in revenue for Sony for very little effort. I'd say that's extremely solid.

From the sounds of it, word of mouth and legs are pretty terrible though.

Like you said, it was very low effort so it's likely still profitable but I dont think it would be considered very successful.

So, pretty weak it is, wonder if it can reach SFC 1st week as LT sales in Japan with all the bad press the Playstation Classic recieved

Pretty sure though they were expecting much more than this. Just one third of the SFC classic is maybe not a disaster, but definitely very underwhelming.

The PS mini definitely had a lot more potential, but Sony simply didn't want that. It is likely they cheaped out on the games liscensing and kept it overpriced, so who knows what kind of profit they made. However at $99, it launched to similar revenue to the NES mini.
