Forums - Gaming Discussion - If you´ve played both, which is the better JRPG, Dragon Quest XI or Octopath?

Easy question. Dragon Quest Xi is the best JRPG since Persona 5.
The world, the characters, gameplay, the story and details, ect better than Octopath.

Dragon Quest 11 is like a wonderful journey and big experience :)

You played both games? I didn't know you had a switch.

OT: I currently only played octopath and very much enjoyed it, will be most likely getting Dragon Quest 11 in some form or another later on (TOO MANY GAMES).

Oh that's easy. DQ 11. By miles.

The exploring in octopath was very awkward. The grinding was god awful. The quests were strange to complete. Starting them, finding out where to go what to do, finishing them etc. And because there was 8 stories, the story was generally just subpar. Some good, some quite bad.

Big fan of the subjob, and the arch-sub jobs.

But yeah I think DQ 11 beats octopath in every possible category.

grinding - true, and te figts are also toooo long to try to emphasize the break system, I guess.

quests are weird - huh? Are you saying the game was unclear on the location of quest objectives?

8 stories - this is exactly what I love about Octopath, however, I am not playing completionist, boring stories may be skipped (still only on Chapter 3) Weird to hear people trashing story opposite Dragon Quest, imo. I have played 1, 4, 6, and 9...didn't find any to be mega story games, but perhaps 11 is different. Wish I could say I have played 11 tho, it could indeed be better than Octopath, 9 was amazing.

For me, Octopath is the first JRPG I have played since FF6 that is more about roleplaying than guiding a cast of characters through an anime plot.  The only other experience like it was Dragon Quest IV, and I really like this style of rpg.

It seems I'm the odd one out, but I much preferred Octopath's gameplay to DQXI's. The boost system felt incredibly satisfying, and there was a lot more strategy involved in how you set up your party with the job system and how you could keep passives from those jobs. Runemaster Side-Steppin' Tressa is a good time, and it feels good to tweak and play with builds until you find one that suits you.

DQXI's battle system is a classic battle of attrition, but not much more in that. Pep powers (sometimes a character becomes 'pepped up' which increases stats and allows them to use special skills with other characters) are too random early on to build a strategy around and at the end of the day, it came down to managing mp and hp. Maybe I was missing something, but I never found many fun strategies and synergies between skills and teammates beyond the aforementioned pep powers. Also the fact that there is no visible turn order is probably the worst thing about the battle system for me. It was incredibly annoying, especially when bosses could attack multiple times in a row

But, then again, DQXI has Sylvando so it's basically an overall tie in my book.

IMO DQ5 and 11 have the best stories in the series, you should definitely check out 5, it's not only the best Dragon Quest, but one of the best games of all time.

I've played both, and Dragon Quest XI is among the best JRPGs I've ever played. It's absolutely amazing, and you will not be disappointed.

Still waiting for the Switch port of DQ11. Octopath Traveler is extremely good though. My only issue with it is its a little too long. If the length was edited then it would be in the top 10 RPGs ever made. Music, combat system, world design, are all top notch and some of the storylines are really great too. What it does well, it does extremely well. Just needs some editing.

I'm going to have to go with DQ XI personally

DQXI, I mean the postgame is kind of amazing in that game. I also prefer a storytelling method like DQXI has compared to Octopath. Music in Octopath is much better than DQXI, combat is deeper but deeper isn't always better imo. I think DQXI is just one masterfully crafted JRPG. A true Master Class in JRPG gaming.

Heard some people say DQXI is far too easy on normal while the 'super strong enemies' mode not being very well balanced, do you share that opinion?
