Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch is perfectly viable as a primary or even only gaming device...

I love the Switch, but I could never be a Nintendo only gamer anymore. Too many great games on the other two consoles. Especially the PlayStation.

There are great games on other consoles, which is why my PS4 Pro is my SIDE console.  However if I only had a Switch, there are plenty of other full retail ports that I could play to keep busy.

Dragonball FighterZ

Ys VIII

South Park games

Wolfenstein 2

Valkeria Chronicles 4

Crash N Sane

Starlink Battle for Atlus

Just to name a few.  This is on top of other exclusives the Switch may have.  Sure I would miss out on games like Horizon or God of War, but in no way would I have a shortsge of games to play.  I can say this because I own Red Dead 2, but I have enough games to focus on with my Switch  and portability is a factor for me, to where I have yet to even play the game.  In no way do I feel unhappy about this decision.

Now missing out on games can also be used against any console as well.  If you are a Sony only gamer, you get no Mario, Zelda, Smash, Octopath, Xenoblade, Bayonetta, Metroid, etc.  This works both ways, even for XBox to an extent.

Well that's why Im not a Sony only gamer either. I play all three. Although the Xbox brand is starting to lose its appeal to me. Hopefully they will be better next gen.

If you are satisfied with the Switch only, then it seems like you either have a very broad taste in games or you have little time to play games. The highs of the Switch, like Mario Odyssey and BOTW are amazing, but they are too far apart for me. Earlier next year Im really excited for Resident Evil 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, Sekiro, DMC5 and some others Im interested in. If I was only a Switch gamer I would be stuck with what during that time? The 6 year old 60$ game NSMBUD and maybe Fire Emblem and Yoshi? Yeah, no thanks.

I only have time for one console.
For every generation I list all features and games that every console has to offer.
Nintendo usually wins but often with a narrow margin.

Reasons Switch is not enough:
* Lack of racing games. It is becoming better but it is still lacking a real good racing game that is not a Kart racer.
* Lack of western developed games. GTA, RDR, COD, Assassins Creed etc.

The problem with this is that it falls to personal taste, similar to portability.

For example, I get less than an hour a day (on work days) if I game PS4 only.  However I get at least 2 hours a day (on work days) if I play Switch.

One could also argue that the PS4 or X1 does not have many games that support local multiplayer.  Personal needs do not equate to an overall flaw in the general library.

I do have a broad taste on games, and while I do have time to play PS4 only, I get more time with Switch.  I am looking forward to those games as well, but also...

Fire Emblem

Bayo 3

Metroid Prime 4

Smash

Core Pokemon

Animal Crossing

Luigi's Mansion 3

You seem to get the premise though.  I understand your personal reasons and you seem to understand what I am getting at as well.

I do, but we know nothing about the releases for any of those games(except Smash obviously). Just a rough estimate on a few. Im really excited for Metroid and Bayonetta, but they could be 2020 for all we know.

You're right. Switch and all consoles are amazing. Being a gamer is amazing

I could never be single console user, not since the SNES days. Two devices typically covers about 95% of what I want in gaming, used to be three, but Nintendo combined two into one. Last generation it was all 5, but really only 4 accomplished the goal.

Indeed.  Having my PS4 Pro as a secondary allowed me to play Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, RE7, and Persona 5 this year.

On Switch I got to play Octopath, Bayo 2 (never played on WiiU), Mario Party with my wife and kids, Xenoblade 2 Torna, and also gave me the time to play many of the third party games I mentioned as well due to portability.  Had I not been able to get those on Switch, I would have had to pass on them entirely due to time constraints.

A good combo really is the best for most gamers.

Well, you don't have to convince me. Switch is currently my primary gaming platform, my Linux-PC my secondary. And my backlog is ever increasing.

But there are some reasons why Switch might not be enough.

1. You like big action games, shooters or sports games. Without a doubt the Switch is bad in these categories, although it looks a bit better in the action department, but still there is much more on the other consoles. If you on the other hand like instead adventures, metroidvania or platformers the Switch is obviously better than any other platforms. For me I don't have any interest in Sports games, get enough action games on Switch and have only occasional urge for shooters which Doom satisfies well enough.

2. You like extraordinarily one of the exclusives on other platforms or a multiplat that is missing the Switch. This is usually the main argument to own a Nintendo console, but it works as well for the other consoles. Who wants Red Dead Redemption 2 is not looking fondly on the Switch. For me personally - my taste in games is stuck somewhat back in the past, I didn't follow modern trends. So I don't care much for most of the games. I kinda miss out on Witcher 3, but basically that urge can be satisfied enough with games like Zelda. Other than that nothing really speaks to me which is missing Switch. Yeah, if I had RDR2 I would give it a try, but I don't care too much. I tried GTAV because everyone was so into that, and it bored me to death. So I'm not too hot on another Rockstar game.

3. You might look down on Nintendo games, indies and genres besides the action and shooter stuff. Therefore Civ VI (which is a big deal for me personally) does nothing for you, you scoff at Undertale and Hollow Knight and Mario looks silly and childish. As I'm one of the older gamers, I'm over these stuff. I like games that entertain me. Does the game look silly or childish? I don't care, I'm sure enough of my adulthood, that I can admit that Eevee is totally cute and I just enjoy leaving the start screen of Let's Go on for a few seconds to enjoy how Eevee jumps around without a care in the world. Yeah, as a teenager I too was anxious to look mature. But I got over it. Same with indies. I don't need the validation of the peer group to play the same game as everyone. I can pick up a total indie game and enjoy the hell out of it.

4. You don't have to work or generally more than enough time so that you constantly need new games to be entertained. Probably most consoles don't work for you alone, but maybe a console with more and bigger games take precedence over the Switch then. I have work and also have other interests like movies and books, so my gaming time is restricted. I also like to play slow and take my time in games. Therefore I don't get through games that fast.

Weird thread, I own all three consoles, but really any of them could be viable as a primary gaming device. I mean, my iPhone would be perfectly viable as a primary gaming device. There is an argument for any gaming platform really.

Yeah, depending on your personal tastes a platform with only one game could be primary platform, if this one game is the one you play every day.
