Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch is perfectly viable as a primary or even only gaming device...

Change my mind.

Instead of just making a long list of points to counter what is most commonly argued for the contrary, lets play a game.  Post why you think that this is not true and I will periodically trickle in with a multi quote rebuttaling with evidence that you may (or may not, I am fair) be wrong.

Also note, that I am speaking of the Switch in general.  Everyone is different and will need different criteria to meet their gaming needs.  So arguments like, "I do not care about portability" are null and void, because this is about why the Switch is just as viable as any other console as a primary, not why it does not meet your personal needs.

Hit me everything you got!

UPDATE (to save scrolling)

Ok, so far I have seen no valid argument over why the Switch cannot be a viable primary console option in general, only subject reasons that only account for their own needs.

"lack of major 3rd party games"

Most of these games are only big in advertising, as it does not rquate to quality.  How many times have major releases disappointed this gen?  Also there are plenty of other 3rd party games that are just as good on Switch, just without the advertising that the "bigger" games have.  I have listed a few of them countless times already.

Point is, there will always be something to play.

"I do not care about portability"

Thats nice, but just as many people do.  Myself for example is a result of it giving me double the playtime that my PS4 offers.  This allows me to play more games on Switch, making my PS4 Pro my SIDE console.

The bigger library is a pointless thing FOR ME if I will play and finish more games on the Switch anyway.  Time to play is everything, and the Switch has a solid library overall so far in of itself.  There was never a time I felt like I had nothing to play, and even picked up games that I had previously skipped on PS4 due to those very time constraints.  Being on Switch made that possible for me.

"online sucks"

Yes it does.  Not to a point where it makes the system unviable, but yes it does suck.  No argument from me on this.

"Too many ports"

The Switch is less than 2 years old, and it already has more exclusive games in quality and quantity than the PS4 and X1 did during their entire first 2 years.  Furthermore most of the games during that period were cross gen, offering little incentive to buy a PS4 at the time (remember the PS4 has no gamez memes?).

Did this make the PS4 any less viable if a main console for you, or does that only apply to Nintendo devices?  Hell the PS4 was even a jump from free online on PS3 to paid online on PS4.  The free games sucked as well, only recently have they hotten better.  At least Nintendo gives us ports of current gen games that can be taken on the go, alongside great exclusives out of the gate.

"No games that cater to me"

Can be made for any console.  Switch has more playformers and Metroidvania games, and will likely have the most Japanese support moving forward.  Not to mention the games that support local multiplayer in comparison to the ither two.  One of the most subjective points yet.

"less visual performance"

That is a trade off for portability.  Do not like it and do not like Nintendo games, go with PS4 or X1.  This makes it no less viable for others though.

These are the main points I am seeing and the only thing they do is make you look closed off in your own little bubble.  Your needs are not the needs of everyone, and so far no evidence has been given to why the PS4 or X1 are more viable as a main console than the Switch.

You are right. But to be fair, any console could work as the main, even the only, console for certain gamers. It depends on tastes.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Come join The 2018 Obscure Game Monthly Review Thread.

You are right. Good luck countering that, ha!

Edit* Darwin beat me

I love the Switch, but I could never be a Nintendo only gamer anymore. Too many great games on the other two consoles. Especially the PlayStation.

Which is the main point of this topic.  I see people trying to claim otherwise, despite it being obviously false.  This is their chance to put their money where their mouth is.  =)

There are great games on other consoles, which is why my PS4 Pro is my SIDE console.  However if I only had a Switch, there are plenty of other full retail ports that I could play to keep busy.

Dragonball FighterZ

Ys VIII

South Park games

Wolfenstein 2

Valkeria Chronicles 4

Crash N Sane

Starlink Battle for Atlus

Just to name a few.  This is on top of other exclusives the Switch may have.  Sure I would miss out on games like Horizon or God of War, but in no way would I have a shortsge of games to play.  I can say this because I own Red Dead 2, but I have enough games to focus on with my Switch  and portability is a factor for me, to where I have yet to even play the game.  In no way do I feel unhappy about this decision.

Now missing out on games can also be used against any console as well.  If you are a Sony only gamer, you get no Mario, Zelda, Smash, Octopath, Xenoblade, Bayonetta, Metroid, etc.  This works both ways, even for XBox to an extent.

While I agree that Switch is a wonderful system—and I would chose it first among all others if forced—I have to take issue with your premise. If the Switch doesn’t meet the personal needs of an individual, that’s exactly why it wouldn’t be viable for him or her.

This is not directed to those individuals.  This is for those who claim the Switch can be nothing more than a side console to a real gamer.  They know who they are, as do most people on here as well.

This is a chance for them to have a civil discussion on the matter instead of just randomly tossing it around in other topics.

Too many games, so little time.
I only have time for one console.
For every generation I list all features and games that every console has to offer.
Nintendo usually wins but often with a narrow margin.

Reasons Switch is not enough:
* Lack of racing games. It is becoming better but it is still lacking a real good racing game that is not a Kart racer.
* Lack of western developed games. GTA, RDR, COD, Assassins Creed etc.

Depending on taste, yes. But considering how most players seem to favor games like cod, bf, rockstar games, bethesda games and in general all those third party games that sell a ton of copies each year then that's not the case for probably 90% of the players. The switch simply lacks too many important games to be the only gaming device for the majority of the population.
