Forums - Gaming Discussion - NPD: U.S. video game spending up 24% to $9.1 billion in Q3 2018 led by xbone, and ps4

Actual Q3 hardware sales numbers this year (with YoY changes in parentheses):

PS4: 805k (+14.5%)
NSW: 726k (-1.4%)
XBO: 490k (+18.4%)
3DS: 236k (unknown; missing Aug. 2017 data)

What is the YoY difference for 3DS in July & Sept?

Switch is flattening out. Hopefully this doesn't reflect holiday sales.

Ah, no worries, it won't. This FY it shipped 5.1m versus 4.9m last year in the same timeframe (April~September), but this time with Super Mario Tennis as its biggest game, while last year had Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 & Co on this period. It's amazing that it's flat/slightly up considering that. Now it's the opposite for the holidays, it will have 2 heavy hitters while last year it only had Super Mario Odyssey. I think 9m is the minimum it will ship this holiday.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

So did the Xbox win?

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Ohhh! All the talk is about Q4 right now so I assumed we would be talking about that. Why on Earth are we talking about Q3 as if it is noteworthy?

Yea I'm  drugged up on nyquil when I posted this thread I thought it was talking about November sales.

Just this thread?

That sentence wasn't about what made the most money, but what contributing factor that led to the growth for the quarter. Xbox One is super up from last year, namely in revenue, PS4 was also up largely in September thanks to wonderful game called Spider man. The Plug and play consoles were also heavily featured in the summer by Nintendo, so they produced a large growth as well.

Switch while winning two of the months of the quarter, was flat, so it cannot be held responsible for the growth of the quarter, just that it was stable.

I will answer this for you as well, since the last post was just trying to clarify the report's statement, Xbox experienced huge growth because last year it was sort of a dud, this is why it is heavy contributor to the growth compared to last year, however with that said it is still third place unit wise and most likely revenue wise as well, as Switch won July and August and PS4 won a lot in September with Switch was second. Xbox One is consistently third in most months and usually sees the most growth in November and December for a large chunk (due to serious amount of deals).

With the timing here I thought this was Out/Nov as we almost always talk about FY Quarters when talking about sales here.

Well, it's about last full quarter then, and only about growth yoy? (Also misleaded by the fact the title is about money spent)

Heh, thank you for clarifying.

The whole article is focused on growth in the industry and why it may be happening. It doesn't actually attach first place, second place and so on.

So subject context in which "led by xbox one" is mentioned is to explain 11% hardware revenue growth. Xbox itself was near 20% growth (unit sales growth, I don't know about the dollar amount attached to said units), but like I said before, is still very distant third for the quarter.

I read it as it showed the highest growth, of them compaired to last year.
So part of why video game spending is up (on hardware by 11%), is because Xbox is doing better this year than last.

Doesnt say anything about who won the npd or bf.
just that XB,PS4 and NES+SNES classic drove total spending up abit.

Crazy that even with Xbox One growth, this is its second worst year this gen. Shows that last year was truly a disaster and that the X has made up the bare minimum but not enough to compete with even prior years.

Also 3rd Qrt was July - September......which we already know PS4 was easily the best selling console each month. With Switch in second
