But Nintendo sold 85M+ consoles with the 3DS and the Wii U combined. What is the reason to say that the Switch ended the "dark ages of Nintendo"? Do you think the Switch will top 85M+?

PSP: 80 million. PS3: 85 million. Combined: 165 mil.

Vita: 16 mil. PS4: 80 mil so far. Do you think ps4 will need to sell another 65M+ ?

I think Marketing wasn't the biggest offender of Wii U failures. The hardware itself was a huge problem from the get-go. How was the marketing team supposed to advertise that POS when Nintendo itself didn't have a good idea to implement it in the 1st party games?

Marketing in combination with branding/naming was definitely one of biggest reasons why Wii U failed so hard, even months after Wii U launch you had people that thought that Wii U is some kind addon for Wii and that Wii U games can run on Wii, even retailers made those mistakes.

This point doesn't make sense.

The Switch is a successor to both Wii U + 3DS as it combines both home gaming and handheld gaming in one console.

The PS4 is only the successor to the PS3 and is doing an amazing job in that.

The PS Vita is only the successor to the PSP but failed to reach the success of the PSP.

Is this a joke? why didn't you combine Switch+Mobile gaming as well since it was part of Nintendo revenue?

Switch is going to outsell 3ds+WiiU

PS4+PSvita isn't going to outsell PSP+PS3

Cherry picking at its finest

But you combined the revenue of both 3ds+Wii U, why can't i combine the revenue of both ps4+vita? Also, talking about revenue, where is Nintendo games for mobile? They make a lot of money for Nin, so, where is it?

Skyward Sword is though, and Xenoblade is gaining popularity with every title, don't count that out. As far as last story, a system seller it may not be but you can't deny the importance of a mystwalker jrpg.

I would also argue that Xenoblade and Splatoon are two of the most important new IPs of basically (we're a year  short of 2 decades since Smash was a new Ip) the last two decades.

Yeah, but are not system sellers. We are analyzing the sales of nintendo consoles and not the technical quality of their games

Both of those games did show an acute rise in console sales, though there is no denying they do not come close to Mario or LoZ. They definitely should have focused more on getting those games out in a vastly more timely manner than 2 years in and a cross platform title respectively. Not to mention the gutting of the control scheme of BOTW which will always leave a nagging feeling that we wound up never really experiencing BOTW the way it was meant to be experienced. Oh well.

I saved a lot of money during these dark ages, lol

As a small mention, 2015 was a bad year for the 3ds. Aside from a couple Zelda games, niche JRPGs, and mediocre games like Chibi-Robo, there wasn’t a whole lot going on for the system; its sales success that year mostly came from the New 3ds model that released.

A new Nintendo era was ushered in by the Switch; the Nintendo faithful could raise their heads after years of embarrassment as the Nintendo Dark Ages were over.

Super Mario 3D World does not hold a candle in terms of sheer brilliance, and elevation of the series to Super Mario Galaxy

Mario Kart 8 didn’t change the series as much as Double Dash!! or Mario Kart Wii

Smash Bros for Wii U did not come close to having the same amount of content to Brawl. It didn’t even try to include a story mode.

Yoshi’s Wooly World was practically the same as prior Yoshi games, just with a new coat of paint (or yarn)

Star Fox: Zero could never come close to Star Fox 64

I disagree with 2015 being a bad year for the 3DS. Critics loved that year with Majora's Mask, SMT: Devil Survivor 2, Etrian Odyssey Untold 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

As far as sales go Monster Hunter 4, Yokai Watch, Majora's Mask, Tri Force Heroes, and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon all sold over a million units.

I still remember the thread here when Switch was announced. So many of us here were so badly beaten and berated, that we were all sure the Switch would fail. I thought $300 was too much to ask. People looked at Mario Kart, and Zelda as the only launch window titles, and proclaimed "Another system with no games!".

I completely agree with you on how lazy 3D World, Starfox, and Whooly World were. Those games were just dissapointing. 3D World clearly started out life as a 3DS title, and was changed over to a Wii U game once Nintendo realized how badly the 2013 drought was getting.

For Sega maybe, and it was definitely the gen when Nintendo lost their grip on power and their fortunes took a turn for the worse, but the N64 era was still brighter for Nintendo than the Gamecube or Wii U era.

The negative impact of the N64 era is still being felt today, as for Wii U era there is a lot there that actually has helped Nintendo greatly which is reflected in is gen. GameCube era was just awkward....

But yeah I'd say forcing the company out of being a traditional console manufacturer and still having 3rd party devs avoid you like the plaque earns N64 the top spot.

I agree with the N64, while there were some bright spots, I don't think any collapse felt more brutal than 1997 for hardcore Nintendo fans. Especially those of us who were into import games and the emulation scene to play foreign games... Fire Emblem 4 (Genealogy of the Holy War) and following that game using a translation FAQ is a gaming experience I will never forget... a REWARDING one though.

All the third party support lost was like getting a swift kick to the sternum after getting kneed in the nuts. While there was still Rare, DMA (to an extent), and an innovative Nintendo, so much of what made Nintendo recognizable was stripped away. And I feel like the Gamecube's technically lower point is mainly a result of the fallout of the N64. Wii U was a sad state too, but it didn't feel nearly as long as the stretch between SNES and DS Lite/Wii. Especially since pretty much after it was clear the Wii U was a failure there was a bright "Nintendo NX" light at the end of the tunnel.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
