Dude I tought I was the only person on Earth that loved that game. I have so many fond memorys of it.

You are the only person aside from myself that I have ever met that has played it lol That game has something, maybe the combination of real-time 3-D action combat, the sweet anime cutscenes or the actual reincarnation story concept that has you choosing between Arcia and Laramee at the end. I really loved that game.

For a PSX game it was quite a bit ahead of its time. The limitation of the system were noticeable but the ideas there were something we wouldn't see again for awhile in games, I spent my entire PSX days trying to find a similar experience and never did. I also loved the OST, being the videogame music lover that I am thats always a key aspect on games for me. The battle song in particular is stuck to my head for eternity

Completely agree. It seemed like the type of game that had a bunch of great features and ideas all rolled into one package but most of them weren't fully fleshed out to their maximum potential. The dungeons too were fun, but the story itself was truly Grand. The sinking continents, the sky pirates, the final revelations about Eon's origins. The game could have been so much more. Even years later as I played Skies of Arcadia on DC all I could think about was the Granstream Saga for some reason lol.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I really didn't like this game back then. I thought the story sucked and the translation was terrible. Graphics and music were incredible, though. Maybe because it was called "Final Fantasy Killer" and I loved the FF series. Whatever it was, this game never reached epic status for me.

You are in the majority, the minority is very vocal though. But yeah in the 90s the game didn't seem special. But the game has garnered a loyal cult...a very loyal cult. BradLoD loves the game I am curious as to when he played it for the first time. He truly likes the game.

So @m0ney, did you get past that battle?

Out of curiosity when was the first time you played the game?

Early 2001.

Got it by chance.

My bother and I used to buy PS1 games by phone, we would call a store that would deliver a combo of 3 games home without charging for the deliver.

We had a game catalog from the store, names only, so we used to buy games we knew about (didn't even knew what internet was back then, or even english).

One day we called and 2 from the 3 games we wanted were sold out, so I had to make a quick decision to pick some other games as our mother would not let us use the phone again or for too long (I was 7 and my bother 9), then I quickly jumped to the rpg/adventure section and instantly liked the word "dragoon", plus the fact it had 4 discs, then the woman on the phone said that game would count as 2 (as it was a double case) but I was decided I don't know why, lol, so I got it blind, didn't know a single thing about it.

My bother got mad at me and didn't want to play the game because it could have been two different games, so I had all the time with it myself.

Best decision of my life.

It was destiny.

I see, sounds legit It matches somewhat the experience of a young neighbor I once had who also claimed to love the game. It was his first RPG ever and he was 8 or 9 the first time he played it.  I trying to figure out how the game got the cult following so I am doing a mini census lol but my experience was different I was 16 and had played and reviewed at least a dozen JRPGs before Dragoon, perhaps that's why I it didnt have the lasting impact in me.

The Legend of Dragoon has always been a game that really divides people's opinions. Even back when it was first released the critical opinion varied from perfect scores down to low 40s at least, so it's not like this is a new thing or anything. Personally, it's my second favourite game ever, only behind Final Fantasy IX, and I've held on to that opinion since I first played it in 2001 through my previous playthrough a few years back. I can see why people might not like it, but for me there are very few games that compare to it. Just how it is with different tastes and opinions I suppose.

It holds a 74 metacritic which I would say it is about Right. Almost a full point more than how I rated the game . I just can't say it is a 10 or 9 , it had too many flaws even the world map was lacking it was like connect the dots, it wasn't terrible I still hold a copy of it for collection purposes so I didn't hate the game. I will agree on FFIX it was probably my second Fave FF, the most polished real style FF game we ever got, with a very good translation. A real 9.5-10 in my book.

Well I have replayed it at last 8 times since then, lol.

I can imagine but sometimes the first RPG you play is the one that sticks with you. Wild Arms in my case I rate the game highly maybe others hated it lol.

In the end its just differing opinions, and I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm guessing everyone has those games they rate much higher than average, LoD just happens to be the one I always found to be far better than what the average score would suggest.

Indeed, I met so many people online over the years that dislike or even hate the game.

Gamespot Gamefaqs was the only place where I found some following to it, which was the first forum I ever joined back in 2008/2009, and started using to train my HORRIBLE english skills, lol, it would take me around 2 hours back and forth thinking and searching to make a post a this.

When I came here nobody talked about it, so I started spreading love, and here we are, lol.

That's more or less it really. There doesn't really seem to be a general consensus about LoD, like there are for a lot of other games. Naturally people will disagree about the quality of a pretty much any game, but I'm not sure how often that opinion differs to quite as huge a degree as it does with LoD. There are other titles like that for sure, but I feel like they are much more uncommon in general.
