Forums - Sony Discussion - Friends, gamers, VR players lend me your.. opinions on Playstation VR.

I have the cam set up on eye-level when I'm standing and I just angle it down when I play VR seated. Many games work well in both, but Move games usually are better standing. You get the best tracking in the space between 1.5m (~5ft) to 2.5m (~8ft) from the camera and should set up your position accordingly. Some Move or Aim supported games certainly need space around you to be able to reach out/punch/etc, controller based VR games (of which there are many notable ones aswell) don't.

Setup is: Cam - PS4 - processing box - TV       so it's fairly straight forward.

The CUH-ZVR2 has HDR-pass through, meaning that if you play PS4 on your TV with HDR enabled you don't need unplug the processing box. Unfortunately the V1 processing box didn't pass on the HDR signal.

The Astro Bot/Moss and Creed/Super Hot bundles definitely come with the V2, but I'm not sure what the Skyrim one comes with. V1 and V2 can be differentiated by looking at the top of the headset "eye-box" - there is a button on the V2 there, like in this pic.

I've got the glacier white PS4 Pro and love the way it performs. I game on a 36" Vizio 1080p 120Hz HDTV and use the higher resolution rendering that the PS4 Pro offers. The super sampling is marvelous, giving games better details and consistent quality. I really like that it matches and pairs with the PSVR perfectly. The glacier white used on them both looks absolutely beautiful. Appearing futuristic with its curves. Glacier white looking pure and angelic. With the lights are on and they are powered up it all becomes a spectacular light show not unlike a grand over the top Christmas display. Like National Lampoon's and the Griswald's house. That's the beauty of my glacier white PS4 Pro, glacier white DuelShock 4 controller, and glacier white PlayStation VR headset.

I bought the version 2 of the PSVR. The one with the HDR passthrough and included the DOOM VR game as well as a camara. I bought it when it was sale for $199 on the date of 6/17/2018 at Walmart. PlayStation themselves discounted the PSVR that week and I had to make Walmart look the price up from their own online pricing to show it was on sale, otherwise they would of charged me the original $299 for it if I hadn't.

The PSVR at $199 for me has been a remarkable deal. I feel it has been such a unique gaming experience in itself that at that price it has only strengthened my love for my PS4 and gaming all around. I would like to share with you what I am enjoying most and my use of PSVR.

Astrobot: Rescue Mission, as well as the free ninja bot VR game that came before it, Moss, and Wayward Sky are absolutely amazing must play games. My favorites, making owning the PSVR really satisfying playing through them, and then all the other games included free with my PS Plus subscription that has been offered ( Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, RIGS, ect.) Every game feels unique, new, and amazing like experiencing something for the first time.

Playing Tetris Effect now and the PSVR is making it feel ethereal. Tetris is now new again like playing it for the first time. PSVR is just that special, makes gaming across the entire genre of gaming seem totally new. Using the game I just got Platinum on last week as an example; "Deracine" by From Software (makers of Bloodbourne) is a exploration based VR adventure. I absolutely loved it, seeing it through to the end. Being playable virtually made it feel like a new perspective in engagement on the exploration adventure games. making it really fun, unique, engrossing, memorable, and worth the investment.

Sharing my PSVR with friends and family is also worth its weight in gold. The joy, feelings, and excitement that occurs playing in PSVR is something beyond imaginable and really more special than I could ever blatantly explain here in words alone.

I’d chime in with the praise...it’s the most amazing piece of tech I’ve bought in decades since the first PS1. It brought my excitement back for gaming and makes me feel like an 8 year old again.
Just demoed it to a new friend today and he’ll just ran to the store to get one tomorrow. Astro Bot, Superhot and Wipeout convinced him. Do it, the prices on those bundles are crazy!

So once again I am intrigued by Playstation VR. The lower the price gets the more interested I become.

How does the set up, and using of it work? Do you sit, or do you stand?

How close to the Playstation do you have to be? Is it like the kinect where you need a lot of empty space around you?

What does a pass through for HDR mean? I recall some talk about having to plug and unplug something a lot.

Are all the bundles currently using the "CUH-ZVR2" version of the headset? The new kind.

Set up is extremely simple with the ZVR2 unit. Just one extra HDMI cable added to your current set-up, a power cable, and a USB cable. The headset itself only has one wire. The headphone jack, mic controls, and power are all built into the headset on ZVR2. ZVR2 is a huge improvement to ease of use compaired to ZVR1.

VR offers nearly unlimited potential, so you will have expereinces where you Stand, Sit, Stand and Sit, or Move Around within a Bounding Box. I play Gran Turismo Sport sitting in a unit that houses my seat, wheel, and pedals. Superhot VR has you moving all over the place, up/down, side to side. In Astro Bot you will be sitting, with dual shock in hand, just like a traditional game. Other games like Skyrim can be played sitting or standing, using either the Move's or DS4. Then you have stuf like Firewall Zero Hour where standing with the Aim controller offers the best expereince. Batman Arkham VR is a standing expereince, were you teleport to a location, and walk around in the bounding box.

There are many great expereinces across all play styles. If you just want to sit, you will find great expereinces. If you just want to stand, you won't feel a lack of content. If you are willing to try anything, then PSVR is going to be one of the best expereinces you have ever had, gamingwise and beyond.

The amount of space needed depends on each titles. Some games can be played sitting about 6' from the camera. Others are more enjoyable if you have a good 10' x 10' space to move around in.

Pass Through means that a signal can go from you PS4 through the Box to the TV. The OG model could not pass HDR signals, so even though PS4 was capable of outputting HDR, if the PSVR was plugged in, you would only be able to do basic 4K SDR. The new Box in ZVR2 has a newer HDMI standard that is capable of HDR pass through. So with ZVR2 you will get the best signal the PS4 can deliver, sent through the box to your TV. No need to ever unplug the PSVR.

Skyrim, Creed/Superhot, and Astro Bot/Moss all have ZVR2. Skyrim and Creed/Superhot also come with a nwer version of the Move controllers, that use USB Micro, and sync up with PS4 a lot better than older models (In my expereince).

As others have said, PSVR is the most exciting Gaming device I have bought since PS1 and N64. It is delivering new expereinces at incredible rate. Even old games feel like nothing you have ever expereinced before. The Scale, the Emersion, the Community, and the Social gameplay are all on a massively different level than anything you ahve expereinced before. VR allows you to stand side by side, and talk face to face with people anywhere in the world, as if you are physically there together. Other characters feel like they are standing there with you. It is absolutely incredible. When you sit in a call in Gran Turismo, or an X-Wing in Star Wars, it will blow you away.

Two years after bying it, I am still blown away by the expereinces, emersion, and social aspects. The games keep getting better, and better, with upcoming games looking to continue to move the bar foward. I paid $499.99 for OG set up Day One, the same month I paid $10K for a 75" 4K HDR TV. From the expereinces I have had between both devices, I would gladly have paid $10K for PSVR, because it far surpasses anything that the 4K TV has ever accomplished. I upgraded to the ZVR2 the day it arrived, and I will be buying all future revisions they put out for the foreseeable future. It is an incredible expereince, and it will continue to see massivve improvements with every revision for the next decade or two.

How does the set up, and using of it work? Do you sit, or do you stand?

First time you may need to use the diagram, but after that it becomes just obvious and intuitive. You hook up HDMI from PS4 to it and from it to the TV (if you want people to see the same as you), hook up USB between PS4 and it, hook up power cord. Then you plug the helmet 2 cables to a "control box" and this to the PSVR. All set up can take up to 5-10 min. You can play both sit or stand depending on the type of game. Most of the ones I played were sitting.

How close to the Playstation do you have to be? Is it like the kinect where you need a lot of empty space around you?

The ones I played can be with "0" space around, if possible I would have a 1m radio to be able to turn around and move arms for some games. You can play around 1-2m away from TV if you want or up to 4m if I'm not wrong.

What does a pass through for HDR mean? I recall some talk about having to plug and unplug something a lot.

Version 2 have HDR passthrough. Version 1 doesn't. It means your helmet besides not having HDR support also won't allow the HDR signal to reach the TV. So when you want to play a non-PSVR game that have HDR and you want to see the HDR color you'll have to remove the cable PS4-PSVR and plug PS4 straight to TV. I have managed it by having two HDMI hooked to my system, one when I want to play regular games and another for PSVR.

Are all the bundles currently using the "CUH-ZVR2" version of the headset? The new kind.

Yes, I believe it's been about 1 year since only Version 2 have been produced (but you may get older ones still on sale depending on the store), but it's quite easy to identify it on the looks (because of the cable between the helmet and the box).

For $199 I'd say if you are intrigued get it, and I was an avid detractor initially and still would say not worth $400.

I was certainly intrigued by the ps vr, but I was very very disappointed. For one, I can’t play it for very long without feeling sick, maybe a half hour. Also, the resolution is so poor that it ruins the quality of the experience, it’s like playing things with ps2 level graphics. Honestly, my ps vr is just a paperweight, so I would definitely not recommend it personally. However, some people seem to really like it.... so there is that...

I do not like teleporting around. This is highly disorienting for me. But all the other games not with that as a core feature are just wonderful. I especially wanna mention RE7. An absolut must play masterpiece for me. The first time I had ot stand off against an enemy was so exhilarating that my hands started shaking. It was a weird mixture of feelings: partly fear - this game can be very scary, partly excitement to play something completly new and unknown to me. I like horror games but the horror was not the big take away for me. It was the feeling of immersion, presence, immediacy and realism that no other game ever achieved for me.

I cant wait for dreams to release. It will get PSVR support after launch. One developer said he built a little helicopter sat down in it and just started flying around in VR - and suddenly he felt like a kid again - the wonder and joy VR is able to intantly instill in the player is without an equal. There are already many must-haves for PSVR, but dreams will be of another kind in its magnitude.

Have you even played newer titles like Moss, The Persistence, Astro Bot or Wipeout? Because this "PS2" comparison you made is downright ridiculous, if you have.

There are so many games now you can play however you want. I prefer to sit down and use a ds4. I'm dealing with a back injury atm so standing and fast movements are kinda out for now. $199 is a steal for what it delivers. You are basically buying another console to play on, it just happens to plug into a ps4 to work :)

I'm currently playing Tetris Effect and while that has a VR mode, I must admit proper sound and HDR add more to that game. It's very cool in VR however you quickly notice that a lot of effects are simple 2D sprites, which you don't notice on tv. The end sequence is definitely euphoric in VR though.

I have the breakout box on top of the ps4 with the cables neatly looped and tied to keep it all together. I move the ps4 around with all the stuff on top between my primary and secondary tv so I'm switching hdmi cables all the time anyway. You do need two power cables as the breakout box has one as well unfortunately. Setup is not much of a hassle anymore and it's quite flexible for camera setup as long as you play sitting. For room scale play you do need to pay more attention to camera placement yet most of the time I just have it sitting on a cabinet at waist height, off center, pointing slightly up and it works fine.

Start with something easy on your senses. Allumette is a great free example where you are just inside the world (short movie). Moss is an excellent game without movement to get used to the head tracking and looking around. (It's like Trine going from screen to screen). Wayward sky has some movement, just like Astrobot which is currently one of the best games for psvr. Superhot is another 'static' title which is best played standing so you can move around and duck behind cover. Statik you play seating all the way through, excellent puzzle game,

When you feel comfortable in VR with your own movements, you should be ready to take on RE7 and other slower moving games. RE7 is great since it uses the ds4, starting with analog movement is a lot more comfortable than the on/off movement of the move controllers. Dirt Rally is great for racing, not too fast and a complete game. Wipeout has a lot of comfort options, yet you are going upside down anyway!

Too many great games to list, step into the magic!
