The situation, people are unwilling to admit the fact that Gamescom and TGS are much bigger video gaming exhibitions than E3 (and if you think Gamescom is a big show now, it also grows year over year too). Nintendo doesn't even pound out their hardest Directs during E3 anymore - IMO the Treehouse footage is usually more interesting; not just a 40-minute long clip compilation, but multiple 30 to 45-minute uncut video with a good mix of casual and hardcore fun. YET, everyone seems to focus on the fact that Nintendo isn't doing this all up on stage at the conference hall.
Sony has announced they're pulling out completely, and have no plans to go off on anything else relating to E3. Instead, they've decided they're going to explore another avenue when engaging their consumers.
In terms of that sinking ship that's E3, they're only the latest in a string of others who have gotten off. But look at Gamescom, the number of developers, press, and attendees that came last year was multiple times larger than E3; even more, are going to come this year. It makes sense though, most presenters don't want to blow their load THAT long before Holiday season; Gamescom and TGS come at more appropriate times.
Does E3 still get you excited?
