20.  This PS1 RPG has a great story, fantastic characters and time tested gameplay, but dammit if I didn't just spend a lot of time Chocobo digging anyway.
19.  This game doesn't seem so bad until you get to Death Mountain.  It's a good thing those ladies heal you up at their house.
18.  This strategy JRPG is a fantastical take on WWII.  First in the series.
17.  Sid Meier finds a way to bring his most famous series to the PS3 and XBox360.
16.  "Green Warrior is about to die!"
15.  The first time plastic instruments offered 4 players simultaneously.
14.  In this arcade classic you can choose to play as a male barbarian, a female barbarian, or a dwarf.
13.  Although this game first released on the PS3 and XBox360, it feels old school, probably because of the difficulty.
12.  This Switch game returned to the open world roots of the original game in the series.
11.  This game is the origin of a popular gaming term.  The term means, "this is the character in the game that represents me."

#18: Valkyria Chronicles?

#16 Deus Ex: Human Revolution
guessed by Darashiva
platform WiiU
release year 2011
developer/publisher Eidos/Square Enix
genre first-person action-adventure and stealth shooter

Few games feature transhumanism as theme. Which is surprising, as other media like movies and books are more often into this type of story. The Deus Ex series is about the only game series I know featuring transhumanism.

I am not too much into shooters, but the stealth shooter is a different story. I like it to patiently sneak my way up to the target. I also like if the decision you make have an impact, and in Human Revolution your decisions as a player certainly have impact. There are also usually so many possible solutions to a problem, that you can easily play in multiple styles. It's one of the few games, there diplomacy is a possible alternative to shooting, and it also integrates technical enhancements into that gameplay pretty well.

Eidos really did great with that game.

20: Final Fantasy IX

A bit behind with these posts, so here's my thoughts on the previous few games in my top 50.

#14
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
(YoY: Same Rank)

This is the game I consider to be the peak of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater everything the series was about came together almost flawlessly. The story was well written, involved, powerfully emotional, and lacked the convoluted nature that plagued both Sons of Liberty and Guns of the Patriots. Even though I genuinely like, or even love, every main MGS game, only Snake Eater is what I would consider a genuine masterpiece, and as far as I'm concerned it is Hideo Kojima's crowning achievement thus far in his career.

#13
Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin
(YoY: Same Rank)

Something of a black sheep in the trilogy, Dark Souls II is often maligned as the weakest entry in the series, and while I would agree to that I still believe that it is also an exceptional game. One of the main reasons why I like it so much, is because it brings an entirely different and fresh perspective into the world of Dark Souls, having very little connections to its predecessor. It also featured a very different style of world design, lacking much of the interconnected locations of the first game and instead featuring numerous separate long paths for the player to take with one central locations from which most of these branches originate from.

A special mention must be given to the game's three DLC locations, which in my opinion are some of the best and most interesting places the series has ever shown us. They also contain a lot of the game's most interesting storytelling, surrounding the fates of three different kingdoms and their rulers. The game isn't without its faults of course, most notably it features quite a large number of poorly designed boss fights. In general that's the one aspect where DS2 falls short compared to the two other games, though it still features numerous excellent bosses as well, just not as many as the other two.

Both correct!

11. Well, you got the right word, but I still need the name of the game that this comes from.  (The series was extremely well known in the 80's so it isn't too hard.)

Time to give a few more hints:

16.a)  "Green Warrior is about to die!"
b)  This arcade game is the second in the series.  In the first game you couldn't pick the color of your warrior, wizard, elf or valkyrie.

11.a)  This game is the origin of a popular gaming term.  The term means, "this is the character in the game that represents me."
b)  In this classic RPG, you are not on a quest to save the world.  Instead your character is meant to develop the 8 virtues.

10.  In this Golden Era arcade game, your character looks kind of like a smurf with a bicycle pump.

9.  This series of strategy games has been around since the Famicom, but this game was the first one released in North America and it was on the Gameboy Advance.

11. Ultima, though I'm not sure which game was the first to give the main character the Avatar name. I'll say Ultima IV.

Correct!  The game is "Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar"

A very good guess, but not the game I am thinking of.
