Hey. (yes, I'm still alive)

It's been hard to find the willingness to come here lately because it's Smash season, but I think it's winding down enough that I could dedicate some time to doing this again. So, time to catch up... a lot.

#24 - This 90's game's terrible voice acting is as infamous as it is beloved.
The prologue features particularly notable dialogue, some of which has been reused this year in a trailer for another game.

#22 - Shortly after fighting yourself, you fight the Statue of Liberty. I'm also getting into quite the spoilery territory here... oh well.
It's a shooter game, and the spoiler stuff above is from a DLC campaign.

#21 - She's back. (Well, the phrase loses a bit of impact a year later.)
However, she isn't really back, because this game was just a remake. She will be back soon, though.

#20 - A big chunk of this game only exists because of Satoru Iwata's contribution in development.
#19 - A dark, immersive and intense rhythm game that features no catchy or recognizable music. It was promoted as "rhythm violence".
#18 - There's a light and dark world, three temples and several keys you have to collect to unlock each. No, it's not a Zelda game.
#17 - The only game in this long-running and highly successful franchise to break the norm and feature a different ending from the other entries.
#16 - A certain screen of this game is commonly used as a meme when something big (such as a game release) is close to happening.

#21: Metroid Samus Returns

#20 Ballon Fight?

Anno 1404 (US: Dawn of Discovery)

  • Windows PC
  • 2009
  • Construction & Management Simulation
  • Related Designs / Ubisoft

There is a good chance a game in the city-building genre is a game I will like. I have put hundreds upon hundreds of hours into several games in the genre and this one is no different. In fact, 'Anno 1404', which goes under the name 'Dawn of Discovery' in North America, is likely only behind a small handful of other games in this regard, further on in the list.

As a city-builder, the objective is to create a city that's as prosperous as possible. Like the other games in the series, the game revolves around producing goods by managing production chains and trading between your islands and other players to further your main settlement. In a first for the series, the player must however build two distinct settlements of two cultures, balancing resources and different goods for each type of settlement while both benefit from the advancements of the other.

Besides the solid gameplay, which we've come to expect in this series, graphics to this day look absolutely amazing, and there's a very wide variety of buildings to build, especially with the 'Venice' add-on installed. Some buildings, like the harbor and the palace, can be build piece by piece and together with the plethora of decorative objects to become as big and elaborate as you want to, and so your 15th century cities can look exactly like you want them to.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

  • GameCube, Wii, WiiU
  • 2006
  • Adventure
  • Nintendo EAD / Nintendo

The Nintendo Wii system couldn't have started off, or the GameCube send off, with a better game than 'The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess'. For a while the only game in the series simultaneously released across two platforms spanning two generations. Personally I got the GameCube version first, only to get the Wii version a couple months later when I also got the Wii. It's the burden of wanting to own every retail release of every Zelda game.

The game follows a familiar pattern in the series and is heavily inspired by it's most famous predecessor. That doesn't make it less of a game though, and it actually helps the fluent story. A story presented in a very stylistic way, including what is probably the best cutscene I ever saw in a video game. Like any Zelda game, the look of it serves the theme of the game perfectly, in this case the depressed story of the evil thief Ganondorf's return to a declined kingdom, after being imprisoned for hundreds of years. The environments, the tone of the visuals and the soundtrack all serve to show a Hyrule long past it's prime, with hints of a more prosperous past.

What sets the game apart though is it's gameplay design. Dungeons are important to me in any Zelda, as well as the beautiful landscapes, and this game delivers in a big way. The game is home to plenty of enormous dungeons, each more unique than the next, each with their own back-stories, realistically integrated into their environments and locations, and plenty of aspects and detail to theorize about. It also features many grand vistas to gaze upon while riding on horseback, and it never gets old. It all is some of the best level-design in general among gaming actually. At the end of the day that's what's most important in a game, and that's keeps drawing me back every time.

#22 UFO: Enemy Unknown
guessed by Darashiva
platform DOS
release year 1994
developer/publisher Mythos Games/MicroProse
genre turn-based strategy
links Wikipedia
last year  #21

UFO was strategy bliss back in the day. I remember I played and played and just like that it became bright again - I had just pulled an all-nighter. This game had base build-up, research and crafting in real-time, but for fights it changed into turn-based mode. And everything could be controlled. You see in this screenshot the staggering amount of buttons. Environment was destructible. Enemy was fortified in a building? Blow it up!

The aliens had mean tricks up their sleeves. Mind-controlling aliens. Aliens that walked up to you people and layed an egg in them - they died and turned into another one of these aliens. Nearly indestructible aliens. Floating aliens. But you could bring back what you found and set the researchers onto that. And after research you could use the alien tricks against them.

This game was and is so much fun.

Well, your guess for mZuzek is the right answer for mine :P It’s Majora’s Mask.

So I guess you get half credit :D

Sorry, I got behind schedule. I was playing the last week mostly. An very enticing game. Yes, you guessed it, Katamari Damacy Reroll! Just finished the last level (create the moon) and saw the credits. No played the credits. Smash Bros has playable credits but this is something else. Not gonna spoil it. Get the game, it is great. Get at least the demo. And yeah, it will be in my future lists.

But enough about the game of the year. As I am far behind, I think I flood this with a lot of hints, so we can back on schedule.

a) I want to become a pirate!
Guessed by Darashiva: The Secret of Monkey Island

#15
a) The gameplay of one RPG-series of that company combined with the characters of another RPG-series.

#14
a) What is the cause for the hollowborn?

#13
a) If you drink water contaminated with industrial waste, you take over the world!

#12
a) You can be joined by a mighty warrior who talks to his miniature giant space hamster.
