Forums - Sales Discussion - Console Sales in Eastern Europe

Yes, the 60k must have been an out of date number when that previous article was written.

Russian PS3 sales are currently comparable to some of the smaller Western European markets such as Ireland, Norway, and Portugal. It has the potential to become significantly larger in the future.

Incidentally:

After more than a decade with the organisation including four successful years at the helm, Warwick Light, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand Ltd (SCENZ), yesterday announced his imminent departure for a new role as Sales and Marketing Director, Russia and Eastern Europe, based in London.

His new position, which he is set to commence on July 20, will involve the management of 22 employees throughout the key markets of Russia, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary.

“It was an opportunity that was too good to pass up and whilst I’m sad to leave, I’m really excited about the prospect of working in new territories and tackling new challenges,” he says.

He's the one who gives out NZ GfK Playstation figures, so we may not get those anymore, but hopefully he'll start giving out Eastern Europe shipments in his new job.

I must have missed the re-unification of Czechoslovakia too.

Some details on the very small, but expanding Romanian console market from market leader Flamingo International, which claimed a market share of 30% in 2007:

Google Translation:

Market game consoles in Romania in 2008 will reach a value of about 11 million euro, growing by over 50% compared to 2007 as a result of international trends alignment, officials said Wednesday retailerului Flamingo International.
Retailerul is expected that sales of PlayStation consoles continue to hold the largest share, with a rate of approximately 95% of the market.

"Increased sales in the segment consoles estimated for 2008, is the result of natural evolution of the gaming market in Romania, following its alignment to international trends", think Jiri Rizek, executive director of Flamingo International.

"Thus, if the consoles in 2007 recorded a peak of sales in the last months, in 2008 we expect to record a significant volume of sales of consoles throughout the year. On the background of these estimates, we propose that this year to reach a share 40% of the segment in Romania console, "continued Rizek.

In 2007, Flamingo International has sold 2,000 consoles Sony PlayStation 3, about 3,500 consoles PlayStation Portable, 10,000 PlayStation 2 consoles and about 400 units Nitendo Wii, reaching a market share of 30% per share of console games in Romania.

In the category of games for consoles, Flamingo International reported sales of approximately 40,000 units, they contribute 55% to the total value of sales made by the retailer in the segment of games in 2007. Among the most games for consoles sold in stores Flanco networks, Flanco World and Flamingo Computers were God of War 2, Gran Tourismo 4 and Soul Calibur III, all for PS2.

Flamingo International in 2008 aiming at business 210 million euros, increasing by 22% compared to 2007. Flamingo officials have stated that aims to a profit of 2.6 million euros in 2008, five times bigger than last year.

Principalii concurenti ai Flamingo sunt Altex, Domo, K Tech - UltraPro. Flamingo's main competitors are Altex, Domo, K Tech - UltraPro.

Romanian

Xbox 360 hasn't been released in Romania, but PS3 & Wii have. I don't know whether DS has or not, but they didn't mention any sales for it, so maybe not.

Expecting the Romanian console market to increase in value by over 50% in 2008 to €11m would put the 2007 value at around €7m.

I'm not sure how accurate extrapolating the 30% market share of Flamingo to 100% total Romanian sales will be, but it comes up with this for 2007:

PS2: 33,333
PSP: 11,667
PS3: 6,667
Wii: 1,333

Total HW: 53,000
Total SW: 133,333

Somehow i'm not surprised by the numbers in Poland. I have yet to ever read a gaming magazine here that wouldn't be pro Sony and pro ultra graphics-over-gameplay.

Huh. Who would've thought that beggining anew in my real life would coincide with starting anew on vgchartz?

Actually in Romania I've seen lots of 360's in Media Galaxy and other electronics stores, and quite some time ago, so it must have been launched. I've even seen games that were released day and date with the official European launch dates, so we're definitely growing as a gaming market.

I guess they're grey imports. Lots of places sale 360s & PS3s here, but neither have been officially released. I've even seen them in Tesco. Microsoft have no Xbox support for Romania.

In case I'm mistaken I've contacted Microsoft for clarification.

What does Sealand have to do with Eastern Europe?

Sony Computer Entertainment’s vice president of distributor markets Chris Stanton-Jones has told MCV that publishers risk missing out on making a killing in emerging markets if they don’t start investing now.

Having identified key ‘hot markets’ including Russia, India, the Balkans and Poland, Stanton-Jones revealed several eyebrow-raising facts about emerging markets.

“It is boom time in the emerging markets,” he told MCV.

“Combined, these markets are now the largest in the PAL world in terms of turnover.
Our emerging markets operation now covers pretty much everyone in the PAL region with a colour television – the operation is present in a total of 82 territories. “The Russian market is forecast to overtake Italy in a year and a half, and the Indian software market has grown ten-fold since last year.

“Moving into the emerging markets is not as complex as some people think. The figures for PlayStation Network registration dispel the myth that emerging markets are the ‘back of beyond’. In some markets there’s as much as 50 per cent PSN registration. The only real negative in these areas is the piracy problem, but as retail continues to develop this will become less of an issue.”

Very interesting that Russia is forecast to overtake Italy so soon. Also extremely surprising that emerging PAL markets as a whole are actually larger in terms of turnover than the UK.

First of all there are some serious issues with the article . Flamingo has a market share of 30% but NOT in the gaming segment , but in the entire electronics segment . Hell they barely have any gaming related products except the online store . Every single consoles was released this far in Romania : 360 , PS3 , Wii , PSP , DS . THere is no daubt about that one , and yes there where plenty of 360s at the beginning of 07 here , and yes they apeared on most online stores top 10 sales every week ( as much as I dont like that )untill the PS3 came out . This article has several flaws , so I would deffintaly take the numbers with a grain of salt ...
