Forums - General Discussion - Wild animal population plummets 60% in 44 years - WWF

https://www.rte.ie/news/2018/1030/1007451-wwf_living_planet/

While i like animals and this is shocking there is one upside. This has reduced methane emissions from wild animals dramatically. Imagine while the human population grew to 7BN and our farmed animal populations grew hugely, the wild animal community also grew. That would be disastrous for the planet. So I'm going to take that piece of positive news from this otherwise sad revelation.

I don't think anyone is surprised, if the Earth can be described as a super organism , then surely Humans with our uncontrolled growth must be a cancer

As global temperatures rise, the huge mass of methane trapped under the deepest oceans will be released, nothing we have done up till now will compare, Methane is about 25x the hot house gas that carbon ever was, once we reach that tipping point your gaming days will be over

Not mine. There's no chance the doomsday scenario arrives in my time.

This is why we need to use condoms. -_-

Better birth control in 3rd world countries would definitely help, but it would be very expensive and it won't undo any harm that's already done.

So basically the WWF sucks.

Maybe in Africa, which is the only place on earth where birth rates are way above the number needed to keep the population stable, and it will keep a high pace for the coming decades.

But in all other continents, birth rates have plummeted and population is aging fast.

Aging fast? How?

Because the number of people dying is either even with the number of newborns or greater (which means more people die than are born in some places).

China recently recognized how fast their population is aging, and the government lifted the one child policy and now introduced tax incentives for people to have more than one child.

I know what that means, but why is it happening?

it is a concensus that people are opting to have less, or no child because the costs to raise a child  today is too much and it is currently crushing the middle class finances. in places where the problem is becoming a demographic issue, governments are mulling even give a montly wage for people to have children.

Shouldn't have given us AIDS.
